Tigers' Justin Verlander: Retiring after season
Verlander (hamstring/hip) announced Wednesday via social media that he will retire following the 2026 season.
Verlander addressed his playing future in a statement after MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced earlier Wednesday that the 43-year-old had been named a "Legend Pick" for the 2026 All-Star Game. The veteran right-hander will be honored in Philadelphia next week after being selected to his 10th All-Star Game, but he won't be active for the exhibition while he remains on the 60-day injured list after sustaining a left hamstring injury during a June 17 bullpen session. Verlander -- who was placed on the shelf April 4 due to hip inflammation -- has since resumed playing catch, but he's without a clear timeline to return from the IL. He'll look to move past his injuries over the next few weeks and attempt to make at least a few more appearances for Detroit before the end of the season as he closes the book on a 21-year Hall-of-Fame career. Verlander is the majors' active leader in games started (556), wins (266) and strikeouts (3,554).

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Scratched from Sunday's start
Verlander (hip) has been scratched from a scheduled start Sunday versus the White Sox due to a left hamstring injury, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Verlander had been slated to return from a nearly three-month absence with left hip inflammation, but he encountered a setback with his hamstring during a bullpen session Wednesday. The Tigers expect the 43-year-old's recovery to last "a matter of weeks." Keider Montero will start for the Tigers on Sunday and is likely to make additional starts while Verlander recovers.

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Returning Sunday
Verlander (hip) will return from the injured list to start Sunday's game against the White Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Verlander threw 66 pitches in a four-inning sim game Monday without any problems, so the Tigers will allow him to return from the IL over the weekend and make his first start since March 30. The 43-year-old posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 10.2 frames during his rehab assignment at Triple-A, but he was lit up for five earned runs in just 3.2 innings during his lone MLB outing this season and is set to return against a White Sox offense that's posted a .777 OPS since the beginning of June.

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Tosses 66 pitches in sim game
Verlander (hip) threw 66 pitches during a four-inning simulated game Monday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Verlander went up against the likes of Hao-Yu Lee, Jake Rogers and Wenceel Perez during Monday's sim game, per Petzold. Petzold also notes that it seems as though the Tigers aren't confident the veteran right-hander is ready to face major-league competition, despite being given a clean bill of health. It's not yet clear as to when Verlander will be activated from the 60-day injured list, though Saturday against the White Sox appears to be the next possibility.

Verlander (hip) is slated to throw a simulated game in Houston on Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
While Verlander's rehab assignment looks to be over after he built up to 5.2 innings and 86 pitches in his second start with Triple-A Toledo last Wednesday, the Tigers aren't yet ready to make room for him in the big-league rotation. The veteran righty will thus remain on the 60-day injured list for the time being, but he'll continue to stick on a five-day pitching schedule by throwing a sim game Monday. The Tigers will decide Verlander's next step following the sim game, and it's possible that he'll return from the IL and move back into the rotation during next weekend's series versus the White Sox.

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Gives up four homers in rehab start
Verlander (hip) struck out three and allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks across 5.2 innings in a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Toledo.
After tossing five shutout innings and 64 pitches in his first rehab outing with Toledo on June 2, Verlander wasn't quite as sharp in the second start of his rehab assignment. Though he was able to stretch out to 86 pitches and averaged 92.9 mph with his four-seamer during the outing, Verlander struggled to execute, particularly with his slider. He allowed four home runs in the start, three which came off sliders and traveled at least 400 feet. Despite the shaky performance, Verlander could still be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list during next week's series in Houston to make his first start with the Tigers since March 30. He's expected to throw a bullpen session in front of the Tigers' brass over the weekend before a decision is made on his next step.

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Set for one more rehab start
Verlander (hip) is scheduled to make a second rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Toledo, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Verlander turned in a successful rehab outing with Toledo back on Tuesday, tossing 64 pitches and allowing four hits and no walks while striking out three batters across five scoreless innings. Despite the strong showing, the Tigers have determined that Verlander will require at least one more outing in the minors to get stretched out further. If all goes well Wednesday, Verlander could then be reinstated from the 60-day injured list to make a start during the Tigers' three-game series in Houston that begins June 15. The 43-year-old righty made just one appearance for the Tigers this season before landing on the injured list April 4 due to left hip inflammation.

Tigers' Justin Verlander: Another extended live BP on tap

Rather than joining a minor-league affiliate for a rehab assignment, Verlander has been gradually ramping up his pitch count through a series of sim games. Verlander should be ready to handle something close to a starter's workload following Wednesday's session, but the Tigers will likely wait and see how he responds in the next couple of days after the workout before determining his next step. In lieu of a rehab assignment, Verlander has remained with the Tigers and has been getting gradually stretched back out through simulated games. The 43-year-old righty has needed more time than expected to recover from left hip inflammation, but he may need to complete just one more sim game before Detroit brings him back from the 60-day injured list around when he's first eligible at the beginning of June. According to Beck, Verlander's fastball velocity sat around 92-to-93 mph during Wednesday's throwing session, putting him a tick or two behind his average velocity during his time with the Giants in 2025.
