The right-hander has been far from a reliable option out of the Orioles' pen. In 11.1 innings since the beginning of May, Nunez has an 8.74 ERA and a 12:8 K:BB while allowing 11 runs on 11 hits.

Summoned to protect a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, Nunez gave up a double to Yandy Diaz and then a single to Richie Palacios to lose the lead. Nunez is working in tandem with Rico Garcia as Baltimore's top closers until Ryan Helsley (elbow) is able to come off the injured list, but he hasn't been particularly reliable so far. Through 24.2 innings, Nunez has a 5.11 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB while converting only half of his six save opportunities.

Nunez has handled two save opportunities since Garcia was last put in that position, so it appears manager Craig Albernaz is willing to mix and match at the end of games. Rico Garcia had picked up the Orioles' past two saves after regular closer Ryan Helsley (elbow) landed on the IL on May 1, but Garcia was deployed in the eighth inning Monday to face the heart of New York's order (Ben Rice, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger). After Garcia got through that frame unscathed, Nunez entered in the ninth and worked around a two-out single to successfully close things out. It was Nunez's second save of the campaign -- his other one came April 22 versus Kansas City. Garcia has been dominant this season and remains Baltimore's primary ninth-inning option while Helsley is sidelined, but it appears manager Craig Albernaz is open to using Garcia earlier if the situation calls for it, which makes Nunez a candidate for occasional save chances.
