Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Picks up eighth save
Beeter allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings to earn the save in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Athletics.
Beeter cleaned up a mess inherited from Tom Cosgrove in the eighth inning. In the ninth, the Athletics were able to scrape together a run, but Beeter never let the game get dangerous as he closed out his eighth save and his first since July 6. The reliever had allowed just one run over nine innings between June 9 and July 10 before a meltdown versus the Yankees on July 11. For the season, he has a 3.77 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB through 28.2 innings while adding eight saves, five holds and five blown saves.

Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Melts down in loss, blown save
Beeter (3-2) took the loss and blew the save Saturday against the Yankees, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks in the eighth inning. He failed to record an out.
Washington summoned Beeter after Orlando Ribalta was able to get just one out in the eighth frame, but Beeter was unable to help extinguish the fire in a disastrous outing. The Nationals' much-maligned bullpen continues to search for answers in high-leverage spots, as its now blown a staggering 27 saves in 2026 already. Beeter still appears to remain one of the club's favorites for saves due to a lack of alternatives, holding a 3.62 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 31:18 K:BB with seven saves in 12 attempts over 27.1 frames.

Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Earns seventh save
Beeter picked up the save in Monday's 12-11 win over the Astros. He allowed no hits or walks while striking out one over 1.1 innings.
Entering with a one-run lead and two outs in the eighth inning, Beeter retired all four batters he faced to close out the high-scoring affair. It marked the right-hander's seventh save in 11 opportunities and his first since June 22 against the Phillies. With a 3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 30:18 K:BB across 27 innings, Beeter seems to be the top ninth-inning option in an incredibly weak Nationals bullpen.

Beeter was charged with his fourth blown save after allowing two inherited runners to score and tie the game in the seventh inning. Washington's beleaguered bullpen is searching for answers, as it surrendered 15 combined runs in the ninth inning over this four-game series with Philadelphia. The Nationals optioned the struggling Gus Varland to Triple-A Rochester immediately following Thursday's loss, likely rendering Beeter, who has a 3.33 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 26:18 K:BB over 24.1 frames, as the favorite for saves while the team evaluates their high-leverage arms. Beeter was called upon to protect a three-run lead in the ninth and made quick work of the assignment. After allowing a leadoff single to Bryce Harper, the right-hander immediately erased the threat by inducing a double-play groundball before striking out the final batter of the game to secure his sixth save of the season. Beeter has now recorded saves in consecutive appearances and appears to have solidified his standing as Washington's primary closer. He owns a 3.47 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 26:16 K:BB across 23.1 innings on the year.

After throwing 22 pitches to earn the save Saturday, Beeter got the call again in the ninth inning a day later, and he got the job done to earn his fourth save this season. Beeter has been sharp of late, turning in six straight scoreless appearances and allowing just three hits in that span (6.1 innings) as he looks to have solidified his standing as Washington's primary closer. His ERA is down to 2.30 through 15.2 innings this season with a 1.21 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB.

Beeter relieved Gus Varland with the bases loaded and a three-run lead in the eighth inning and was able to record the final out before tossing a scoreless ninth to nail down his third save. In four appearances since returning from the injured list May 21, the 27-year-old Beeter has fired 4.1 scoreless frames with a 5:4 K:BB. He owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 14:12 K:BB across 14.2 innings this season and should have a good chance to reclaim the primary closer's role given the lack of success his teammates had in his absence.

The right-hander was activated off the IL earlier in the day and was immediately thrust into a high-leverage spot, taking over from Cade Cavalli in a one-run game. Beeter has been sidelined since April 21 due to forearm soreness, but in his absence no one staked a strong claim to the Nationals' closer job -- Gus Varland leads the team with four saves to Beeter's two. Control remains the biggest obstacle between Beeter and the gig, and through 11.1 innings this season he has a 3.18 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB.

Beeter is at the Nationals' spring training complex in Florida, so it sounds like his first rehab appearance will be for the team's Florida Complex League affiliate. The reliever has been sidelined since late April with right forearm soreness, and he shouldn't require many rehab outings before being activated. Beeter has collected two saves this season as part of a closer-by-committee situation, and he should be thrown back into high-leverage situations upon activation.

Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Resumes mound work
Beeter (forearm) has been cleared to resume throwing off the mound, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Beeter was placed on the 15-day injured list a little over a week ago because of right forearm soreness. An MRI came back negative, and Beeter has taken a big step forward with his rehab with the resumption of mound work. It's unlikely he will be ready to return when eligible May 8, but he should be ready shortly thereafter. Beeter has essentially served as a co-closer with Gus Varland this season and should return to that role once he's deemed physically ready.
