  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Grabs fourth save

Beeter picked up the save in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Padres, working around a hit while striking out one in the ninth inning. After throwing 22 pitches to earn the save Saturday, Beeter got the call again in the ninth inning a day later, where he'd get the job done to earn his fourth save this season. Beeter's been sharp of late, turning in six straight scoreless appearances, allowing just three hits in that span (6.1 innings) as he looks to have solidified his standing as Washington's primary closer. His ERA is down to 2.30 through 15.2 innings this season with a 1.21 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Earns third save

Beeter earned the save in Saturday's 9-4 win over the Padres, allowing no hits and two walks with one strikeout over 1.1 scoreless innings. Beeter relieved Gus Varland with the bases loaded and a three-run lead in the eighth inning and was able to record the final out before tossing a scoreless ninth to nail down his third save. In four appearances since returning from the injured list May 21, the 27-year-old has fired 4.1 scoreless frames with a 5:4 K:BB. He owns a 2.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 14:12 K:BB across 14.2 innings this season and should have a good chance to reclaim the primary closer's role given the lack of success his teammates had in his absence.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Reinstated from injured list

The Nationals activated Beeter (forearm) from the 15-day injured list Thursday. Beeter has been shelved since late April with right forearm discomfort, but he's been cleared to return to action after making three rehab appearances. It's possible the Nationals will ease Beeter back into high-leverage outings, but he should be back in the closer mix sooner rather than later.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Expected to be activated Thursday

Beeter (forearm) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against the Mets, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. Out since late April with right forearm soreness, Beeter made three rehab appearances, yielding one run with a 4:0 K:BB in three innings. Beeter notched two saves for the Nationals before getting hurt and will be thrown back into the late innings as part of a mix-and-match bullpen for manager Blake Butera.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Could return later this week

Beeter (forearm) threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one. Per Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic, Beeter will make one more rehab appearance Tuesday before potentially being activated from the IL. The right-hander should slot right back into the Nationals' unsettled high-leverage mix once he returns after posting a 3.48 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 9:8 K:BB over 10.1 innings to begin the season with one win, two holds and two saves in 10 appearances. Beeter's been sidelined since April 21 due to forearm soreness.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Resumes mound work

Beeter (forearm) has been cleared to resume throwing off the mound, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. Beeter was placed on the 15-day injured list a little over a week ago because of right forearm soreness. An MRI came back negative, and Beeter has taken a big step forward with his rehab with the resumption of mound work. It's unlikely he will be ready to return when eligible May 8, but he should be ready shortly thereafter. Beeter has essentially served as a co-closer with Gus Varland this season and should return to that role once he's deemed physically ready.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: MRI comes back clean

Beeter (forearm) had an MRI come back clean and was cleared to resume throwing Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports. The right-hander landed on the injured list Sunday due to right forearm soreness, but the quick return to throwing should allow him to avoid a lengthy stay on the shelf. Beeter will be eligible to be reinstated May 8 in Miami, and it's possible he'll be able to return on or shortly after that date.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Lands on injured list

The Nationals placed Beeter on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to April 23, due to right forearm soreness. It's unclear when exactly the right-hander suffered the injury, but he hasn't seen the field since firing a scoreless frame against Atlanta last Tuesday. Beeter and Gus Varland lead the Nationals with two saves each, so Varland is likely to be the primary option at closer while Beeter is sidelined.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Blows save but earns win

Beeter (1-0) earned the win but blew the save Thursday against the Pirates, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out one in the ninth inning. Given a 7-6 lead, Beeter struggled to find the plate and tossed just 19 of 32 pitches for strikes, allowing the game-tying run on a bases-loaded infield single by Brandon Lowe. It was the second blown save of the season for the 27-year-old right-hander, but Beeter was able to wiggle out of the jam with no further damage, and the Nationals bailed him out by taking the lead in the top of the 10th. Beeter will need to clean up his control issues if he's going to remain in the ninth-inning picture, as he has more walks (eight) than strikeouts (seven) in 9.1 innings so far on the season.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Locks down first save

Beeter earned the save Sunday against the Cubs, throwing a clean ninth inning. Beeter was locked in Sunday, firing each of his six pitches for strikes to nail down the save. The 27-year-old right-hander drew Washington's first save opportunity of the year, suggesting he's at the front of the line when it comes to the closer role. Cole Henry may be in the mix as well, but Beeter could push him back into a setup job with a strong start to the campaign.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Called upon in non-save situation

Beeter struck out one and walked two in a scoreless eighth inning during Thursday's 10-4 win over the Cubs. The Nationals held an 8-4 lead when Beeter took the mound to face the bottom half of Chicago's batting order -- not exactly a high-leverage spot for the 2026 debut of a pitcher generally projected to lead the team in saves this season. Washington doesn't have any established options at the back of its bullpen, however, so as long as Beeter remains effective, he should be in the mix to protect close ninth-inning leads. The 27-year-old right-hander will need to display more control than he did Opening Day to stay in the saves picture, as he tossed just 12 of 24 pitches for strikes against the Cubs. Cole Henry and potentially Cionel Perez, who worked the ninth Thursday, could also get save chances while new manager Blake Butera sorts out his bullpen.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Missing bats this spring

Beeter gave up an unearned run on one hit while striking out three over two-thirds of an inning during Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. A wild pitch cost Beeter an actual out on one of his Ks, but it was an error by minor-league shortstop Randal Diaz that brought home the run against him. The right-hander has yet to be charged with an earned run this spring, delivering a 9:2 K:BB over 4.1 innings, and he appears set for a high-leverage role in a Nationals bullpen that lacks established arms. Whether Beeter can separate himself from the pack and stake a strong claim to the ninth inning will depend on how much he can improve his control after walking 19 batters in his first 29 big-league innings over the last two seasons.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Expected to be recalled

The Nationals will recall Beeter from Triple-A Rochester, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports. Acquired from the Yankees in the Amed Rosario trade, Beeter has had an uneven 2025 season. He's been rocked for six runs with a 1:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings at the big-league level and held a 3.70 ERA and 40:20 K:BB over 24.1 frames during his time at Triple-A. The Nationals have a lot of uncertainty in their bullpen right now, so Beeter could work his way into a high-leverage role if he's able to throw enough strikes.

  • Nationals' Clayton Beeter: Dealt to Nationals

Beeter was traded along with outfield prospect Browm Martinez from the Yankees to the Nationals on Saturday in exchange for Amed Rosario, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Beeter got into just two games with the Yankees this season, allowing six earned runs on five hits with a 1:4 K:BB over 3.2 innings. He was better with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 3.54 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 33:16 K:BB over 20.1 frames spanning 18 appearances. Beeter has worked exclusively in relief this season, but he was primarily a starter prior to this year. It's not yet clear if Washington intends to keep him in the bullpen or transition him back to a starting role.

  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Immediately back to minors

Beeter was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Beeter was called up for his 2025 debut with the Yankees on Wednesday, and he allowed three earned runs across 1.2 innings Thursday against Toronto. He'll now head back to the minors and should serve as depth for the big-league club the rest of the season.

  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Activated and optioned

The Yankees activated Beeter (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Beeter is over his right shoulder impingement, but the Yankees have elected to keep him at Scranton-Wilkes-Barre -- where he had been on a rehab assignment -- for now. The righty has permitted four runs with a 13:7 K:BB over 8.2 rehab innings.

  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Begins rehab assignment

Beeter (shoulder) struck out all four batters he faced in his first rehab appearance with Single-A Tampa on Sunday. It was a good start for Beeter, who should move up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre eventually before being activated from the 15-day injured list. Beeter did not make any spring training appearances, so it could be a relatively lengthy rehab assignment.

  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Placed on IL

The Yankees placed Beeter on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to right shoulder impingement syndrome. General manager Brian Cashman said last weekend that the Yankees expect Beeter to be out "a while," so the right-hander's move to the IL isn't much of a surprise. He remains without a clear return timeline but may receive one once he is cleared to face live hitters.

  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Not expected for Opening Day

Beeter (shoulder) is not expected to be ready in time for Opening Day, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Beeter has not appeared in a Grapefruit League game because of a right shoulder problem. He had been throwing off a mound, but it's not clear whether he might have suffered a setback. Beeter has been converted to reliever and could work his way into an important role in the Yankees' bullpen, once healthy.
... See More ... See Less
  • Yankees' Clayton Beeter: Overcoming shoulder issue

Beeter has been dealing with a right shoulder injury but has resumed throwing bullpen sessions, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. Beeter missed time with a shoulder injury last season in the minors, too, but the Yankees are hopeful the righty is close to putting the issue in the rearview mirror. That said, it might be a bit before Beeter is cleared to appear in Grapefruit League games. The 26-year-old has primarily been a starter in the minors but is under consideration for an Opening Day bullpen role.
