  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Squanders save chance

Weissert (4-4) took the loss and blew a save during Sunday's game against Miami, allowing two runs on two hits with no strikeouts over one-third of an inning.

The Red Sox called upon Weissert in the ninth inning Sunday, as closer Aroldis Chapman got the day off after pitching in back-to-back games. Weissert inherited a one-run lead, but he surrendered a leadoff homer to Dane Myers on his second pitch of the inning. The 30-year-old reliever departed the contest with a runner on first in favor of Steven Matz, who yielded a go-ahead two-run homer to the first batter he faced. Weissert has now blown seven of his 10 save chances, and he yielded multiple runs in an outing Sunday for the first time since July 2.

  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Notches another save

Weissert walked one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Mariners.

All three of the right-hander's saves have come since June 10, but the first two opportunities arose while Aroldis Chapman was getting a rest due to a heavy workload. That wasn't the case Wednesday -- Chapman pitched the eighth inning and faced the top of the Seattle order, while Weissert was called on to retire the 4-5-6 hitters for the M's and got the job done thanks to a double-play grounder from Dominic Canzone. Weissert seems to have earned the trust of manager Alex Cora, and over his last 15.2 innings dating back to May 16, the 30-year-old reliever has a 1.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB with a win and eight holds in addition to his recent batch of saves.

  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Picks up second save

Weissert notched a save against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits in one inning.

Primary closer Aroldis Chapman had pitched five of the previous seven days, so Red Sox manager Alex Cora held him out. That led to Weissert -- who picked up his first save of the season Tuesday -- getting his second ninth-inning opportunity of the week. The save didn't come easily, as the right-hander allowed a run before the potential tying run got to second base with two outs. However, he was able to retire Austin Wells on a flyout to end the game. There probably won't be many weeks in which Weissert gets multiple save chances, but he appears to be a trusted option on occasions when Chapman is unavailable, especially while top setup man Justin Slaten remains on the IL with a shoulder injury.

  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Grabs save Tuesday

Weissert earned the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Rays after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Aroldis Chapman was unavailable after working three straight days Saturday through Monday, but Weissert was able to get the job done in the ninth, retiring the side on just seven pitches to pick up his first save of the season. He's now earned two holds and a save in his last three appearances and has allowed just two runs while posting an 11:2 K:BB in his last 12 innings. For the season, he owns a 1.65 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 37:9 K:BB in 27.1 innings.

Weissert lost his 7.2-inning scoreless streak and has now blown both his save chances this season. His ERA rose to 3.44 with a 19:5 K:BB across 19 appearances. It was the eighth scoreless appearance out of nine for Weissert, who owns a 2.08 ERA with 11 strikeouts and one walk over 8.2 innings.

Weissert (2-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over 1.1 innings, picking up a blown save and the loss in extra innings to the Dodgers on Saturday.

Weissert entered in the 10th inning and gave up a pair of run-scoring hits that wiped out Boston's two-run lead. He was allowed to come back for the 11th and permitted a walk-off, bases-loaded single. It was the second consecutive game that the Red Sox's bullpen blew a late-game lead, as the team may be feeling the absences of Justin Slaten (elbow) and Chris Martin (elbow). Weissert entered the contest having allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits and four walks over his previous 7.2 innings.

Weissert earned a save against the Marlins on Thursday by allowing an unearned run on two hits over one inning.

Primary closer Kenley Jansen was deployed in a tie game in the ninth inning, so Boston turned to Weissert after taking a two-run lead in the top of the 12th frame. The right-hander gave up a leadoff single followed by a sacrifice fly to allow the automatic runner to cross the plate, but he was able to close out the contest despite giving up another hit with two outs. The save was the first of his career for Weissert, who has been used mainly in lower-leverage situations this season. He has just two holds over 37 appearances while posting a 3.41 ERA and 39:9 :BB across 37 innings.

  • Red Sox's Greg Weissert: Secures roster spot

Weissert will make the 2024 Opening Day roster, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Weissert was in danger of being left off the roster as long as Brennan Bernardino was projected to begin the year in the bullpen, but skipper Alex Cora stated Tuesday that Weissert had made the team over Bernardino, who was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. Weissert appeared in 17 games a season ago for the Yankees, posting a 4.05 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 22 punchouts across 20 innings.

Weissert struck out one over a hitless and scoreless relief inning in Wednesday's spring game against the Yankees.

Weissert, who was acquired from the Yankees in the Alex Verdugo trade, has allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.2 Grapefruit League innings. There are few moving parts as the Red Sox evaluate bullpen arms, and Weissert appears to be on the bubble at this stage. He was added to the bullpen in a roster projection compiled by Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, who noted Zack Kelly, Chris Murphy, Joe Jacques, Joely Rodriguez and Lucas Luetge as possibilities.
