Webb (6-3) took the loss and blew the save Saturday against the Mariners, allowing three runs on three hits and no walks in two-thirds of an inning.
Summoned to protect a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning, Webb served up a walk-off, two-run homer to Randy Arozarena. While Webb has fared admirably as the Cubs' closer and hadn't experienced much of a hitch in quite some time -- he was last scored upon June 20 versus Toronto prior to Saturday -- it wouldn't be surprising if Daniel Palencia, who just got back from the injured list, sees the club's next save opportunity. After 6.2 sparkling innings from starter Clay Holmes, Webb followed Ryan Rolison and Ryan Zeferjahn in shutting the door on St. Louis. Webb now has nine saves this season to go along with a strong 2.33 ERA and 10.2 K/9 across 54 innings. He appears to be Chicago's closer of choice at the moment, and he's pitched well enough that he could hold onto the role even after Daniel Palencia (elbow) returns from the injured list in the near future.

After Ryan Zeferjahn let the Nats creep closer in the eighth inning, Webb was called in to put out the fire and got the final out of the frame before handling the ninth. Webb hasn't been tagged for a run since June 20, with his scoreless streak standing at 20.2 innings with a 0.87 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB, and he's converted all six of his save chances during that span. Daniel Palencia (elbow) isn't looking especially sharp during his rehab assignment, and Webb is making a strong case to hang onto the closer role for the Cubs even after Palencia comes off the IL.

The right-hander was called upon to preserve a 6-4 advantage and had no trouble putting down Kansas City in order to extend his scoreless streak to 19 games. Webb is just 7-for-11 in save opportunities this year, but he's converted his last five chances and hasn't walked a batter in his last eight outings. Daniel Palencia (elbow) is nearing his return from the injured list, but Webb's 2.44 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 58:17 K:BB through 51.2 innings this year could keep him in the closer mix even once Palencia is reinstated.

Webb then managed to slow down the imposing Los Angeles lineup for his sixth save of the season. The righty has pitched well with a 2.49 ERA and 56 strikeouts across 50.2 innings this year, and he's done a good job since stepping into the closer role. However, Daniel Palencia (elbow) is due back soon, and the Cubs also picked up Ryan Zeferjahn at the trade deadline, which clouds the back end of Chicago's bullpen a bit moving forward. At the very least, Webb has earned the opportunity to keep seeing high-leverage work, possibly as part of a closer committee.

Webb worked the bottom of the ninth inning in a 2-2 game and managed to force the game into extra innings. He then picked up the win when the Cubs scored twice in the top of the 10th. Webb has been effective out of Chicago's bullpen this year with a 2.64 ERA and 55 strikeouts across 47.2 innings. With Daniel Palencia (elbow) still on the injured list, Webb has a pathway to saves in the short term, though Trent Thornton is also in the mix. It remains to be seen how Chicago approaches things when Palencia returns, but Webb has given the team another reliable end-game option if needed.

Webb was non-tendered by the Rangers last month even after posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 58:19 K:BB across 66 innings during the 2025 season. The 32-year-old right-hander should fill a middle-relief role in the Cubs' bullpen.
