Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Sent back to Reno
The Diamondbacks optioned Drake to Triple-A Reno on Saturday.
Drake was lit up for five earned runs in four innings during his spot start Friday against the Giants, and the Diamondbacks will now send him back to the minors in order to open up a spot on the active roster for right-hander Derek Law, who was called up from Reno. Drake now carries a 6.53 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 20.2 frames with Arizona this season but could still be tapped for another start if the big club's rotation depth is tested further during the final month of the campaign.

Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Yields five runs
Drake allowed five runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Friday.
Drake's first start in the majors since Aug. 6 led to him giving up a season-high five runs. He struggled in two outings for Triple-A during August as well, giving up a total of 10 runs (nine earned) over five innings. Drake is at a 6.53 ERA and 17:7 K:BB through 20.2 innings across his first five starts in the majors. The Diamondbacks have a bit of a patchwork rotation at the moment, which could afford him one more start -- tentatively lined up to be at Houston -- before Michael Soroka (shoulder) and Zac Gallen (elbow) would be ready to return from their respective stints on the injured list.

Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Officially recalled for start
The Diamondbacks recalled Drake from Triple-A Reno ahead of his start Friday against the Giants.
Drake has turned in a 5.40 ERA and 1.56 WHIP over 16.2 innings across his previous four starts with the Diamondbacks this season and will match up Friday against a Giants offense that's logged a .670 OPS since the beginning of August. Juan Burgos was optioned to Reno in a corresponding move.

Drake (0-1) took the loss against San Diego on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 3.2 innings.
Though he walked only one batter, Drake threw just 46 of 82 pitches for strikes. Three of the six hits the rookie southpaw allowed were doubles, and he didn't miss many bats, recording only three whiffs and one strikeout. Drake logged five innings in his first MLB start July 21 against the A's, but since then each of his three outings has lasted four frames or less. Michael Soroka (glute) recently kicked off a rehab assignment, and Drake is currently the most likely Arizona hurler to be the odd man out of the rotation when Soroka is ready to return.

Drake was burned by a two-run homer in the first inning but labored overall, needing 94 pitches to complete just four frames. In three outings since debuting July 21, the 26-year-old southpaw has posted a 4.85 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB across 13 innings. The Diamondbacks received a boost Sunday when Jose Cabrera came up from Triple-A Reno and filled in admirably as a starter in place of the injured Ryne Nelson (elbow), but the club still needs to address another hole in the rotation created by Michael Soroka's (glute) move to the injured list. Like Cabrera, Drake had been serving as a starter at Reno and was also called up Sunday, but Drake wasn't needed to provide length out of the bullpen in the Diamondbacks' 4-2 loss to the Twins while Cabrera covered five innings. If he continues to go unused in relief in the first two games of the Cardinals' series in St. Louis, Drake would make for a logical choice to serve as Soroka's replacement in the rotation.

Drake made four appearances for Triple-A Reno after being acquired from the Rangers in the Merrill Kelly swap. The Diamondbacks had put him on the development list after those four outings for workload reasons, but a sprain was discovered in his shoulder that will end his 2025 season prematurely. Diamondbacks' Kohl Drake: Shipped to Snakes
The Diamondbacks acquired Drake, left-hander Mitch Bratt and right-hander David Hagaman from the Rangers on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Merrill Kelly, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
