The Yankees recalled Winans from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
Winans has spent most of this season in Triple-A, where he's started in 14 of 16 games with a 1.20 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 82:22 K:BB across 75 innings. That success in the minors hasn't translated to the majors, and across 9.1 major-league innings he has yielded 11 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and three walks while striking out six batters. Winans worked through three scoreless innings before falling apart in the fourth. The Reds plated three runs in the frame, capped off by Gavin Lux's solo shot, before adding another run in the fifth inning. Winans was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for Monday's outing and threw only 62 pitches before getting the hook. As things stand, he will likely be sent back down rather than sticking around in the rotation.

Monday's scheduled starter Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) landed on the injured list, and Winans will step in to start for New York. The right-hander has been dominant at Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre this season with a 0.90 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 59:13 K:BB over 50 innings. Yankees' Allan Winans: Option to join rotation
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Winans is an option to join the rotation after Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
Boone also mentioned Ryan Yarbrough as a possibility to make starts for the club. Marcus Stroman (knee) has resumed throwing off a mound and could rejoin the rotation later this month, but the Yankees will need someone else to fill the spot for at least a couple turns. Winans has yet to give up an earned run in 14 innings this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, collecting a 24:5 K:BB along the way.
