Astros' Ryan Weiss: Receiving another start
Weiss is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Guardians in Cleveland, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
The Astros appear set to condense their rotation from six to five men this week, and Weiss, Spencer Arrighetti and Peter Lambert will all maintain starting roles for the time being after Colton Gordon was shifted to the bullpen Saturday. After making his first five appearances of the season in relief, Weiss was unable to make it out of the fourth in his first MLB start last Thursday against the Rockies, covering 3.2 innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks. The 29-year-old righty has walked 13.9 percent of the batters he's faced on the season and will likely need to show improvement in that area to guarantee himself a longer-term stay in the rotation, even as the Astros contend with numerous injuries to starting pitchers.

Astros' Colton Gordon: Shifts to bullpen
Gordon struck out five and allowed three earned runs on four hits and one walk across 2.2 innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Cardinals.
Earlier in the week, Houston recalled Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land and plugged him into a rotation that had recently lost all of Hunter Brown (shoulder), Cristian Javier (shoulder), Tatsuya Imai (arm) and Cody Bolton (back) to the injured list. Gordon was lit up for four earned runs on eight hits across 3.2 innings while taking a no-decision Tuesday in Houston's 7-6 win over Colorado, and the poor showing as a starter followed by the extended relief appearance looks like it will at least temporarily keep the left-hander from receiving additional turns through the rotation. Ryan Weiss and Peter Lambert would now appear to be the likely candidates to fill out the final two spots in the Houston rotation, which could be scaled back from six men to five during the upcoming week with an off day looming Thursday.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Inefficient in first MLB start
Weiss didn't factor into the decision Thursday against the Rockies, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while fanning three across 3.2 innings.
The right-hander made his first start of his MLB career Thursday, but as had been the case in his previous two relief appearances, he didn't have much success. Weiss has tossed between 2.1 and 3.2 innings in four outings since the beginning of April, stumbling to a 7.71 ERA, 2.23 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Despite all the injuries to the Houston rotation, Weiss could be headed back to a long-relief role after this performance.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Starting Thursday
Weiss is slated to start Thursday's game against the Rockies in Houston, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Weiss has been hit around quite a bit during his last two relief appearances, conceding nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits and four walks while striking out eight batters over five innings. However, the Astros are running low on options with seven starting pitchers currently on the injured list, so the 29-year-old righty will be called upon to make his first MLB start. He'll at least benefit from a favorable matchup, as the Rockies rank in the bottom third of MLB with a .681 OPS.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Crumbles in long relief
Weiss (0-1) took the loss against Colorado on Monday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 2.2 innings.
Cody Bolton (back) got the spot start Monday but was pulled after allowing three straight hitters to reach base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Weiss entered and allowed all three inherited runners to score -- along with five more before the frame was over. The right-hander yielded one more run on a Troy Johnston solo homer in the sixth before ending his outing by striking out the side in the seventh. Weiss entered the game having allowed just one run across six innings on the season, but his ERA now sits at 7.27 following Monday's disastrous appearance.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Working out of bullpen
Weiss delivered two hitless innings in relief in Monday's win over the Red Sox, striking out three while walking one.
Weiss failed to crack Houston's rotation out of spring training, though he did make the team as a bullpen option. The right-hander looked sharp Monday, as he set down six straight Red Sox after issuing a leadoff walk in the eighth. It was an encouraging performance for Weiss, after he gave up a home run to Zach Neto in his major league debut Friday. While Weiss could work his way into the high-leverage picture, he's more likely to serve as a swingman or long-relief option this year.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Competing for final rotation spot
Weiss delivered 2.1 scoreless innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League matchup with the Mets, allowing a hit and a pair of walks.
It was a solid spring debut overall for Weiss, as he was able to work out of trouble to keep the Mets off the board. The 29-year-old right-hander is competing with Spencer Arrighetti, Lance McCullers and AJ Blubaugh for one of the final two spots in the Astros' six-man rotation. Weiss, who featured a mid-90's fastball paired with three different offspeed pitches, signed a one-year deal with Houston after posting an impressive 2.87 ERA with 207 strikeouts across 178.2 innings in the KBO last year. Weiss figures to start the year as a swingman out of the bullpen, should he fail to crack the Opening Day rotation.

Astros' Ryan Weiss: Inks deal with Astros
The Astros signed Weiss to a one-year contract Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Weiss is getting a major-league contract after spending part of 2023 in independent ball and the last two seasons with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization. The right-hander had an excellent 2025 campaign with the Eagles, posting a 2.87 ERA and 207:56 K:BB over 178.2 innings covering 30 starts. Weiss -- who turns 29 next week -- will be used as a starting pitcher by the Astros. He has not appeared in a major-league game.

Royals' Ryan Weiss: Outrighted to Triple-A
Weiss cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
Weiss was claimed off waivers by the Royals at the beginning of July, and he posted a 7.57 ERA and 1.82 WHIP in 35.2 innings over 30 relief appearances at Omaha. He'll remain with the Triple-A club after losing his spot on the Royals' 40-man roster.

Royals' Ryan Weiss: Claimed by Kansas City
Weiss was claimed off waivers by the Royals on Friday and optioned to Triple-A Omaha.
The Diamondbacks designated Weiss for assignment last weekend, but the Royals deemed him worthy of a 40-man spot. Matt Peacock was DFA'd to make room for Weiss, who has mostly struggled at Triple-A the past two seasons. He will likely need to improve upon his 7.45 ERA at that level this year in order to get a look in Kansas City.

Diamondbacks' Ryan Weiss: Loses spot on 40-man roster
Weiss was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Weiss was added to the 40-man roster in November but failed to make the Opening Day roster, and he's been removed from the 40-man roster without seeing the majors. The 25-year-old has a 7.45 ERA, 2.28 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB in seven appearances for Triple-A Reno this year.

Diamondbacks' Ryan Weiss: Gets optioned Thursday
The Diamondbacks optioned Weiss to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
Along with Weiss, the Diamondbacks optioned pitcher Humberto Mejia and outfielder Stuart Fairchild to Reno in their latest round of roster cuts. Weiss was added to Arizona's 40-man roster over the winter after compiling a 4.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 88:31 K:BB in 78.1 innings between stops at Reno and Double-A Amarillo in 2021.
