All 26 of Martin's appearances to this point have been traditional starts, but the White Sox have elected to use Chris Murphy in front of Martin as an opener for Tuesday's showdown in Cleveland. Martin has pitched well in two starts since coming back from the injured list, yielding a total of just one run over 10.2 innings.

Martin's performance was volatile prior to his absence, as he carried an 8.03 ERA over 24.2 innings across his previous six starts. Stewart homered off Martin in the first inning and then was the leadoff hitter in the top of the third. Martin's second pitch of the latter plate appearance sailed over Stewart's head, and the next offering clipped Stewart's helmet, prompting Martin's ejection. The right-hander was ultimately charged with four runs on two hits and three walks over two-plus innings. Martin is tentatively lined up to face the Cubs next Tuesday, but he's facing a likely suspension as a result of Thursday's incident.

After surrendering four first-inning runs in his previous outing against the Yankees, Martin endured another disastrous opening frame Tuesday. He hit a batter and gave up six hits, including back-to-back home runs by Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran, with Durbin's blast clearing the bases for a grand slam as Boston scored six runs. Martin later allowed his third homer of the night -- a solo shot by Wilyer Abreu in the fifth -- before exiting in the sixth and watching two inherited runners come around to score. The nine runs matched his career high he previously recorded June 16. Martin has now gone nine straight starts without a victory after opening the season 9-2. He'll carry a 4.13 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 107:37 K:BB across 122 innings into his next scheduled start Sunday against Cleveland.

Martin was in line for the loss Wednesday, giving up all of his four runs in the opening inning, but the hurler taken off the hook when the White Sox rallied for four runs across the seventh and eighth frames. The right-hander has fared poorly since the beginning of June, posting a 5.84 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 35:21 K:BB over his last 10 starts (49.1 innings).
