Pirates' Mike Burrows: Goes four scoreless in no-decision
Burrows did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Rockies, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five over four scoreless innings.
Burrows threw 43 of 57 pitches for strikes and generated 10 whiffs but didn't last long enough to qualify for the win. It was the rookie's shortest outing since July 12, and with a career-high 105 frames already between the majors and Triple-A, his workload is likely being managed down the stretch. He'll take a 4.23 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 78:28 K:BB across 76.2 innings with the Pirates into a road matchup with the Cardinals next week.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Stingy in no-decision
Burrows came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Cubs, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.
The rookie right-hander left the mound after just 68 pitches (45 strikes), and the Pirates may be monitoring his workload given that he threw only 54.2 innings across all levels in 2024 and is already up to 102.2 innings between Triple-A and the majors this season. Burrows was showing signs of fatigue in his prior two outings, surrendering four homers and 10 runs in 9.2 frames, but he didn't give up an extra-base hit to the Cubs on Saturday. He'll look for his first win since June 4 in his next start, which currently lines up to come at home next weekend against the Rockies.

Burrows was undone by a four-run third inning, capped by a three-run homer from Miguel Andujar. He was otherwise sharp, tossing three perfect frames and generating 13 whiffs on just 74 pitches. The 25-year-old will take a 4.66 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 69:25 K:BB across 67.2 innings into a road matchup with the Cubs next weekend.

Burrows (1-4) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings Tuesday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Giants.
Burrows got through two frames unscathed before the Giants started teeing off. He gave up three home runs, including a two-run shot to Christian Koss in the third inning. Willy Adames ended Burrows' night with a two-run homer in the fifth. Burrows was tagged for six runs against Minnesota on July 11 but had since given up only three runs over 17 innings before Tuesday's ugly outing. It was also the first time in his career that he allowed more than two home runs in an appearance. Burrows owns a 4.45 ERA with a 63:24 K:BB through 62.2 innings. He's projected to face the Reds at home this weekend.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Strikes out six in no-decision
Burrows did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-4 loss to the White Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings.
Burrows opened with four scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the fifth and exiting with a lead the bullpen quickly squandered. It was a solid rebound after he surrendered six runs in his previous start, but the 25-year-old was limited to just 76 pitches and has yet to complete six frames in any of his 10 starts this season. He'll carry a 4.70 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 48:19 K:BB across 46 innings into a challenging matchup with the Diamondbacks next weekend.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Chased early at Target Field
Burrows (1-3) earned the loss after lasting just 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one during Saturday's 12-4 loss to the Twins.
After posting five shutout innings with six strikeouts his last time out, Burrows had perhaps his worst start as a pro Saturday. The 25-year-old set a couple of career marks that pitchers don't really like to set, allowing a career-high six runs in 1.1 innings, the shortest start of his young career. The right-hander will enter the All-Star break with a 4.83 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched.

Burrows didn't factor in the decision Saturday against the Mariners after allowing three hits and four walks over five shutout innings. He struck out six.
Burrows struggled with his control as he set a season high with four walks, but he was able to scatter three hits to keep Seattle off the board. The right-hander has yet to last six frames in any of his nine outings this season, but he's pitched well as a back-end rotation piece for Pittsburgh with a 3.63 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB in 39.2 innings.

While he did not qualify for the win, he was sharp, with the lone blemish on his outing being Luis Torrens' solo shot in the fifth inning. Burrows dropped his ERA to 4.15 with a 35:10 K:BB through 34.2 innings this season. He's currently slated to start in Seattle next weekend.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Starting Sunday after relief outing
Burrows is scheduled to start Sunday against the Mets after he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Brewers, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Burrows came on to make his first relief appearance for the Pirates this season after starter Paul Skenes lasted a career-low four innings Wednesday. As a result, the rookie right-hander's turn in the rotation will be pushed back a couple days, and he will take the ball Sunday on three days rest.

The 25-year-old has been a mixed bag through six starts with the Pirates this season, allowing two earned runs or fewer three times and exactly four earned runs in each of the other three outings. He'll take a 4.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 28 innings into a home matchup with the Mets next weekend.

Burrows came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Cubs, allowing one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter.
The rookie right-hander engaged in a pitchers' duel with veteran Matthew Boyd, and Burrows racked up an impressive 16 swinging strikes among his 81 pitches (56 total strikes) before exiting the mound with the score tied 1-1. The 5.1 innings tied for his longest outing among his first five appearances in 2025 with the Pirates, and Burrows will take a 4.24 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 23.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Rangers.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Fans six in no-decision
Burrows didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Marlins after giving up two runs on four hits and three walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out six.
Burrows tied his season high in punchouts, but he did issue a season-high three free passes. The 25-year-old right-hander has yet to deliver a quality start or even reach the sixth inning in any of his four outings, but he has conceded just two runs to go with an encouraging 12:3 K:BB over his last 9.2 innings. Burrows has a 5.00 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB through 18 frames overall, and he's in for a difficult assignment his next time out against the first-place Cubs.

Burrows (1-1) earned the win Wednesday over the Astros, allowing five hits over 5.1 scoreless innings. He struck out six.
It was an impressive showing from Burrows, who had allowed eight earned runs in just 8.1 innings across his first two starts this year. The 25-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 5.27 with a 1.32 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 13.2 innings. Burrows likely earned another look in the Pirates rotation with his performance Wednesday -- he tentatively lines up for a home matchup with the Marlins.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Escapes with no-decision
Burrows allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Burrows' second major-league start was a little worse than his first. He gave up a solo home run to Corbin Carroll in the first inning and then ran into trouble in the fourth. Burrows would have taken a second loss were it not for the Pirates' offense rallying ahead in a massive eighth inning. Burrows has given up nine runs (eight earned) with a 5:4 K:BB across 8.1 innings over his first two starts. Should he stay in the rotation, he is tentatively projected to make his next appearance at home versus the Astros.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Making another start
Burrows is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
While making his first MLB start this past Thursday against the Brewers, Burrows was dealt a loss after giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. Though his results were disappointing, Burrows will get at least one chance to build some security in the Pittsburgh rotation when he faces the Diamondbacks. Since the beginning of May, Arizona hitters have produced a 121 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, so Burrows will represent a risky streaming option on the road.
