The Rays and McClanahan (triceps) avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.6 million contract Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
It's the same salary McClanahan was paid each of the last two seasons. The left-hander did not pitch at all in 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and was limited to only three rehab starts in 2025 due to a nerve issue in his left triceps that eventually required surgery. The expectation is that McClanahan will be ready for the start of spring training, but he's a major health risk heading into the 2026 season.

Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Tuesday that he expects McClanahan (triceps) to be "fully ready" for the start of spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
McClanahan was limited to just two rehab starts in 2025 due to a nerve issue in his left triceps, an injury which eventually required surgery in August. The expectation is that he will have a relatively normal offseason and be on a regular pitching schedule for spring training. That said, it's an uncommon injury McClanahan is coming back from, and the fact that he experienced numerous starts and stops this season should give fantasy managers pause with the southpaw heading into 2026. McClanahan hasn't pitched in a major-league game since August 2023, having gone Tommy John surgery that month, so he could have some workload restrictions in 2026 even if he's healthy, Neander acknowledged.

McClanahan has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2025 campaign to this point while working his way through a lingering nerve issue in his pitching arm. McClanahan hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2023, but this procedure could have him ready for spring training in 2026.

McClanahan had his rehab assignment paused July 21 after he suffered from soreness in his left biceps. This marked his first activity since, though the next steps are unclear, as manager Kevin Cash said the session went okay but wasn't particularly encouraging.

The Rays will be "pulling back" on the left-hander's throwing for a few days, though it's worth noting that the biceps issue isn't believed to be related to the nerve problems in his triceps that landed him on the injured list in late March. McClanahan appeared to be tracking toward making his season debut in early August, but it's unclear how long the setback will delay his return.

The bullpen session came after McClanahan served up two home runs and recorded only two outs in his most recent rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Friday. The southpaw is tentatively scheduled to make the fourth start of his rehab assignment Thursday, but Cash indicated that the Rays haven't yet locked McClanahan in to make an appearance that day. McClanahan has been sidelined all season with a nerve issue in his pitching arm, and he has yet to cover more than 1.2 innings in any of his rehab outings thus far.

McClanahan (triceps) struck out three batters and allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks over 1.2 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
After kicking off his rehab assignment Tuesday with a one-inning outing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, McClanahan moved up to the Rays' top affiliate for his second outing. The 28-year-old southpaw needed 36 pitches just to record five outs, but he made use of all four of his offerings and averaged 94 miles per hour with his fastball. McClanahan will stick around with Durham and will likely make at least two more rehab starts before the Rays consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. He hasn't pitched in a game in the majors since Aug. 2, 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery later that year and then being shut down this spring due to left triceps nerve irritation.
