Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: MRI comes back clean
MRI results on Ribalta's right forearm came back negative Tuesday, Kyle Williams of TheBanner.com reports.
Ribalta landed on the injured list Monday with forearm inflammation, but the results of his tests confirmed that he isn't dealing with a structural issue. The Nationals will now shift their focus to making sure the 28-year-old gets enough time to rest and recover, and with the team well outside of the hunt for a postseason berth, there's no guarantee he pitches again this season.

Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: Shelved by forearm inflammation
The Nationals placed Ribalta on the 15-day injured list Monday due to right forearm inflammation.
Ribalta hadn't appeared in a game since Tuesday before reporting forearm discomfort prior to Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Dodgers, per Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com. According to Zuckerman, the Nationals are still awaiting the results of Ribalta's MRI, but the club had already concluded that his forearm injury was enough of a concern to force him to the shelf. He'll be eligible to come off the IL later this month, but it's possible that his 2026 campaign is over.

Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: Nabs ninth hold
Ribalta struck out two in a perfect inning of relief Tuesday to record his ninth hold of the season in a win over the Blue Jays.
The right-hander took the mound after Gus Varland failed to record an out to begin the eighth inning and allowed three runs, and Ribalta shut down Toronto's rally by retiring the visitors' 5-6-7 hitters. Ribalta has been tagged for earned runs in only one of his last eight appearances, posting a 2.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 12:2 K:BB over 7.1 innings during that stretch and providing a bit of stability to the league's worst bullpen.

Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: Tagged with loss Sunday
Ribalta (0-1) took the loss and was charged with a blown save against the Rays on Sunday, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk in the seventh inning. He struck out two.
The 28-year-old right-hander entered the game with the Nationals ahead 3-2 but served up a game-winning two-run homer to Jonny DeLuca. Ribalta has hit a rough patch in June, getting tagged for runs in three of his last five appearances including the only two home runs he's allowed this season, but through 21.1 innings in 2026 he still carries a respectable 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB.

Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: Collects second save of season
Ribalta earned the save in Sunday's 2-1 win over Atlanta, striking out one batter across two-thirds of an inning.
Gus Varland was given the first crack at earning the save but was replaced by Richard Lovelady after the former gave up two singles to open the ninth inning. Lovelady proceeded to give up a run and issue a walk before Ribalta was called in, and the latter proceeded to retire both batters he faced for his second save of the season. Ribalta is unlikely to see many more save chances, as those opportunities have tended go to Varland, Lovelady or Clayton Beeter.

The Nationals recalled Ribalta from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday.
Ribalta has pitched well in the minors this season, boasting a 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across eight innings with a 7:3 K:BB. He last saw major-league action April 17, when he earned the save against the Pirates after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Cionel Perez was outrighted to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Nationals' Orlando Ribalta: Earns first career save
Ribalta earned the save Thursday against the Pirates, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless 10th inning.
The right-hander worked around the automatic runner as well as a leadoff single, striking out Bryan Reynolds and then inducing a game-ending double play from Jake Mangum. Despite the admirable performance, Ribalta was the sixth pitcher to come out of the bullpen, and the Nationals didn't have many other options in the 10th. Still, the 28-year-old has quality stuff with a mid-90s fastball and a changeup that produced a 40.4 percent whiff rate in 2025, and if he continues to improve his control he could emerge as a high-leverage option. After walking 21 batters in 33.1 innings across three levels last year, Ribalta has issued only one free pass in 7.1 innings between Triple-A and the majors to begin 2026.

Ribalta made his last appearance Tuesday against the Dodgers, during which he allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three in three innings (58 pitches). According to Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com, Ribalta felt tightness in his arm coming out of the appearance and was diagnosed with a bicep strain. Ribalta underwent an MRI earlier Sunday, but the severity of his injury won't be known until the results of his tests are in. With Ribalta sidelined, the Nationals replenished their bullpen by recalling Cole Henry from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.
