  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Hits first career homer

Fernandez went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run during Friday's 17-16 win over the Pirates.

With the Rockies down by six in the bottom of the eighth, Fernandez jumpstarted the final wave of the Colorado comeback with a two-run home run off the bench, his first as a big leaguer. Since being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque in early July, the 22-year-old has seen relatively irregular playing time and has been limited to a .224/.240/.327 slash line over 50 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Back on bench Monday

Fernandez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians.

The left-handed-hitting Fernandez had started in both of the Rockies' previous two matchups with right-handed pitchers, but he'll take a seat against Guardians righty Slade Cecconi while Colorado reinserts Brenton Doyle in the lineup following a four-game hiatus. Though the Rockies have been opening up more opportunities for Fernandez of late, he hasn't yet fully seized control of an everyday role just yet. Since getting called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on July 1, the 22-year-old is slashing .213/.229/.255 with a 2.1 percent walk rate and 29.2 percent strikeout rate over 48 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: On base three times

Fernandez went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored Saturday against the Reds.

Fernandez's key hit was an RBI double in the seventh inning, his second extra-base hit across 24 plate appearances since he was promoted to the majors July 1. Overall, he's started seven of Colorado's last 10 games while going 8-for-24 and hasn't looked overmatched with only five strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Fernandez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

It's the first time in six games versus right-handed pitching since his recall that the left-handed-batting Fernandez is not in the lineup. Tyler Freeman is in right field and Mickey Moniak will be the designated hitter as the Rockies take on righty Brayan Bello and the Red Sox.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Tallies two hits

Fernandez went 2-for-4 with a double Saturday against the White Sox.

Fernandez has started three of five games since being promoted July 1 and is settling into a large-side platoon role. He recorded both the first extra-base hit and the first multi-hit game of his career Saturday. While it's a small sample, Fernandez has encouragingly struck out only twice in 10 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Promotion made official

The Rockies recalled Fernandez from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

Fernandez has been on the 40-man roster since November of 2023, but he will be making his major-league debut when he gets into a game. The 22-year-old has slashed .284/.347/.502 with 13 home runs in 271 plate appearances with Albuquerque this season. The left-handed-hitting Fernandez is not in the lineup against Astros southpaw Colton Gordon on Tuesday, but he should see opportunities in the outfield versus right-handed pitching.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Slated for call-up

The Rockies are expected to recall Fernandez from Triple-A Albuquerque ahead of Tuesday's game against the Astros, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

Fernandez, 22, has slashed .284/.347/.502 with 13 home runs in 271 plate appearances with Albuquerque this season, and he'll now be rewarded with his first call-up to the big leagues. He's served exclusively as a right fielder and designated hitter in the minors this season, and he could find it difficult to earn steady playing time at either of those spots with both Mickey Moniak and Tyler Freeman thriving of late. Fernandez bats from the left side, so he won't profile as a potential platoon mate for the left-handed-hitting Moniak, who often sits against left-handed pitching.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Sent to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Fernandez to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Fernandez is still waiting to make his MLB debut, but he's heading into his second season as a member of the 40-man roster and could be in line to join the Rockies at some point in 2025. The 22-year-old outfielder will first need to show improvement after struggling in his initial taste of the Pacific Coast League upon being promoted from Double-A Hartford last August. Over his 138 plate appearances with Albuquerque, Fernandez slashed .211/.268/.313 with two home runs and 18 RBI.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Making more contact

Fernandez is hitting .277 with a .320 on-base percentage and five home runs in 201 plate appearances for Double-A Hartford.

Fernandez has established at past stops that he has at least plus raw power, but while he has improved as a contact hitter in a return to the Eastern League (64.2 Contact% in 2023, 77.7 Contact% in 2024), he's sacrificing impact at the dish. The Cuban right fielder has a poor 19.9 percent soft-hit rate and a career-worst 28 percent infield-flyball rate. He's still just 21 -- the eighth-youngest qualified hitter in the Eastern League -- and the park at Hartford is the most pitcher-friendly home park Fernandez will play in for as long as he remains in the Rockies organization.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Optioned to Double-A

Fernandez was optioned to Double-A Hartford on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Fernandez went 3-for-13 with a homer in seven Cactus League contests, but the 21-year-old was always destined to head back to the minors. He's mega-talented and has loads of fantasy upside if he can rein in the strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Added to 40-man

The Rockies selected Fernandez to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Fernandez, 20, put up a .799 OPS with 25 home runs and 92 RBI over 117 games this past season between Low-A Fresno, High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford. The young outfielder is now protected from selection in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Makes return at Double-A

Fernandez has gone 5-for-12 with three doubles, two walks, three RBI and two runs in three games for Double-A Hartford since returning from the 7-day injured list Saturday after missing time with an unspecified injury.

The 20-year-old outfield prospect was sidelined for about 10 days with what was apparently a minor injury. Since getting a promotion from High-A Spokane on June 20, Fernandez is hitting .237/.309/.443 with five home runs across 110 plate appearances with Hartford.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Homers in first Double-A game

Fernandez went 1-for-4 with a home run and two strikeouts in his debut for Double-A Hartford on Tuesday.

The Cuban slugger took full advantage of the advantageous hitting conditions at High-A Spokane, slashing .319/.354/.605 with 17 home runs in 58 games before getting promoted to Double-A. Hartford is a more neutral park, so this will be a big test for the 20-year-old as he will routinely be facing pitchers several years his senior. Fernandez's raw power is a clear strength, but he rarely sees a pitch he doesn't like, so it wouldn't be surprising if he goes through some growing pains as one of the youngest players at Double-A.

  • Rockies' Yanquiel Fernandez: Swats 10 homers in May

Fernandez hit .385 with 10 home runs and 19 strikeouts over 28 games in May for High-A Spokane.

He is a very aggressive hitter (five percent walk rate this season), but Fernandez is a natural run producer. He drove in 109 runs in 112 games at Single-A last season and already has 46 RBI in 44 games this year. The 20-year-old Cuban right fielder has a plus arm, but he will need to stay on top of his conditioning to remain a viable option in the outfield in his mid-20s.
