  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Returns to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Thompson to Triple-A Albuquerque on Monday.

With Mickey Moniak (ankle) making his return from the 10-day injured list, Thompson's playing time would have taken a hit had he stuck around with Colorado. He'll instead return to Albuquerque, where he will receive regular reps. Thompson put up a .688 OPS with two home runs and a 5:21 BB:K across his first 27 big-league games.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Playing time on upswing

Thompson will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Pirates.

The Rockies have been making a concerted effort of late to open up playing time for Thompson, who will crack the starting nine for the fourth game in a row. Thompson has produced three extra-base hits over his previous three starts, bringing his OPS up to .708 through his first 75 big-league plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Hits first two homers of career

Thompson went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs and a double in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Cubs.

Thompson homered in the third and fifth innings. This was his first multi-hit effort since June 5, though he's had a tough time getting into the lineup over the last couple of weeks. The left-handed-hitting outfielder has lost out on a regular role as the Rockies get healthier, with Jake McCarthy (illness) rejoining the lineup Tuesday. McCarthy is likely to handle a starting role in left field, so Thompson's time with the big club could come to a close the next time a spot on the 26-man roster needs to be opened. So far this season, Thompson is batting .242 with a .722 OPS, two homers, nine RBI, seven runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases over 69 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Sitting after three straight starts

Thompson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.

The left-handed-hitting Thompson will retreat to the bench while the Athletics send southpaw Jeffrey Springs to the hill for the series finale. Thompson started in each of Colorado's last three games and went just 1-for-10 with six strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: On bench again

Thompson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs.

Thompson will hit the bench for a third straight game, with two of his absences during that span coming against right-handed starting pitchers. Since being promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque on May 22, Thompson has gotten on base at a strong .364 clip, but he's hit for little power (.297 slugging percentage) over 15 games. The Rockies seem to be prioritizing Edouard Julien ahead of Thompson for the final spot in their lineup, so it wouldn't be surprising if Thompson were sent back to Albuquerque in the near future while his playing time continues to slip.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Three hits in loss

Thompson went 3-for-5 with two RBI on Friday against the Brewers.

Thompson has picked things up at the plate across his last four games, with Friday marking the first three-hit game of his career. In that four-game span -- three of which were on the road -- Thompson has gone 6-for-16 with three RBI, three runs scored and three walks. He's also been in the lineup in five of Colorado's last six games between left field and DH and is occupying a strong-side platoon role.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Idle against lefty

Thompson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

The left-handed-hitting Thompson will be held out of the starting nine for the third time in five games, with two of those absences coming against left-handed pitchers. Thompson has been seeing fairly steady playing time versus righties since being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on May 22, but he hasn't made much of a case for maintaining a regular role moving forward. Through his first 30 big-league plate appearances, the 24-year-old has slashed .154/.267/.192 with one extra-base hit (a double), three RBI and one run.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Back in big leagues

The Rockies recalled Thompson from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

The Rockies sent Thompson down to Triple-A on Tuesday, but he'll come back three days later with Mickey Moniak (ankle) headed for the injured list. With Jordan Beck (hamstring) also set to remain on the IL until at least next Friday, Thompson could be in a position to make regular starts in left field for the next week or so.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Back in minors

The Rockies optioned Thompson to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Thompson went 1-for-8 with a strikeout after receiving his first call-up to the majors Friday. He'll now be pushed back to the minors as a result of Tyler Freeman's return from paternity leave, but Thompson is a candidate to return to Colorado later in the year. The 24-year-old outfielder has slashed .344/.491/.496 with four homers, 27 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight steals across 36 games at Triple-A.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: First promotion to big leagues

The Rockies recalled Thompson from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday.

Thompson has gotten off to a scorching start at hitter-friendly Albuquerque this season, slashing .344/.491/.496 with four home runs, eight stolen bases and a 30:28 BB:K. The 24-year-old is primarily a corner outfielder but can also handle second and third base in a pinch. Thompson will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game, but his stint in the big leagues might last only until Tyler Freeman returns from paternity leave.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Sent to minor leagues

The Rockies optioned Thompson to Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

Thompson was added to Colorado's 40-man roster in November but won't make the Opening Day roster. The 24-year-old outfielder will return to Albuquerque, where he posted a .296/.392/.519 slash line with 18 homers and 12 steals in 120 games last year.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Avoids Rule 5 Draft

The Rockies selected Thompson's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Thompson was the 31st overall pick in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft. He reached Triple-A for the first time last season and posted a .911 OPS with 18 home runs, 66 RBI and 12 stolen bases over 513 plate appearances. Thompson also showed solid plate discipline with a 10.8 percent walk rate and 20.9 percent strikeout rate. He played infield earlier in his minor-league career but seems to have settled into a role in left field. He seems likely to make his big-league debut in 2026.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Makes Double-A debut

The Rockies promoted Thompson from High-A Spokane to Double-A Hartford on Tuesday.

In his Double-A debut Tuesday, Thompson served as Hartford's designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. One of the top prospects in the Colorado system, the 22-year-old third baseman earned the bump up to Hartford after slashing .323/.399/.520 with seven home runs and 14 stolen bases in 263 plate appearances at Spokane.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Back in action for Spokane

Thompson (undisclosed) returned to action for High-A Spokane on June 2 and has hit .438 with four home runs over an eight-game hit streak.

He is still listed as being on the 7-day injured list, but he has played in the last three games for Spokane, so it seems like a possible data error on MiLB.com. This hit streak dates back to before the injury, and Thompson, who transitioned from the outfield to third base this year, has a .438/.489/.763 slash line with five home runs, five steals, an 8.7 percent strikeout rate and a .435 BABIP in 21 games.

  • Rockies' Sterlin Thompson: Hits 7-day IL

High-A Spokane placed Thompson on the 7-day injured list May 2 with an unspecified injury.

Before hitting the shelf with the injury, the 21-year-old Thompson was making a strong early case for a promotion to Double-A Hartford. Over the first month of the minor-league season, Thompson slashed .463/.513/.746 with 12 extra-base hits, five stolen bases and a 7.7 percent strikeout rate over 78 plate appearances. He currently leads all minor-league players in batting average and wRC+ (233).
