Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Encouraging start to rehab
Anthony (finger) served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-2 with two walks, a home run and two RBI for Double-A Portland on Tuesday.
Anthony kicked off his rehab assignment in style, rocking a two-run home run in the fifth inning that left Delta Dental Park in Portland. Given the length of his absence, Anthony is expected to play a significant number of games while on rehab. The Red Sox could draw out the assignment until September's roster expansion, but if Anthony shows he's ready before then, it would behoove a team positioning itself for the postseason to bring him to Boston as soon as possible.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Set to reclaim leadoff role upon return
Manager Chad Tracy said Monday that Anthony (finger) is expected to serve as the Red Sox's everyday leadoff hitter while splitting time between left field and designated hitter upon returning from the 60-day injured list, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox are soon expected to get two of their lineup regulars back from long-term injuries, as Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story (sports hernia) are both in the midst of rehab assignments. Story could be activated from the IL as soon as Friday, while Anthony -- who will begin his assignment Tuesday at Double-A Portland -- may need a little more time on the farm to stockpile at-bats before making his return to Boston. Before landing on the IL on May 7 due to a sprained ligament on the base of his right ring finger, Anthony had gotten off to a slow start to the season with a .675 OPS, but even that level of production would still represent a slight upgrade from what the Red Sox have received from their replacement options atop the batting order. Abraham notes that since Anthony went on the IL, Red Sox leadoff hitters have generated a .215/.292/.367 slash line.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Will be evaluated next week
Anthony (finger) will undergo an evaluation following this weekend, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony is making significant progress with his hitting program and is "getting closer" to beginning a rehab assignment. "He's got a real good setup there in Fort Myers right now," Tracy said. "He's got everything he needs, and then we'll see how he does over the weekend and go from there." Anthony is hitting off the Trakjet machine and recently incorporated breaking balls.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Embarking on rehab assignment
Anthony (finger) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Portland, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Anthony has been on the injured list since early May due to a sprained wrist and sprained finger, but he's hit all the benchmarks to be cleared for a rehab assignment. He may need a lengthy stint in the minors given his extended absence, but the Red Sox are inching closer to getting significant reinforcements for the final weeks of the regular season.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Getting closer to rehab assignment
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Tuesday that Anthony (finger) is "getting closer" to a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.
Anthony recently graduated from hitting in the cages to hitting off a Trakjet machine. He last appeared in a game May 4, and given the length of his absence, he may need a longer-than-normal rehab assignment. The report projects Anthony's return for late August or early September.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Progresses to batting cage
Anthony (wrist) took overhand pitching in the batting cage Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Anthony has progressed from hitting off a tee to taking underhand flips to Tuesday's work in the cage. There's a planned recovery day Wednesday before Anthony takes BP in the cage Thursday. Boston interim manager Chad Tracy said Anthony will be evaluated during this phase prior to determining next steps for the outfielder. The progression will include on-field batting practice and hitting off the Trajekt machine, which simulates major-league pitchers. After that, it's a rehab assignment.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Begins swinging program
Interim Red Sox manager Chad Tracy said Thursday that Anthony (finger) has started swinging a bat again, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Anthony began hitting off a tee this week, and he's built up to 30 swings at a time at the moment. The outfielder has been sidelined since early May while nursing a torn tendon in his right ring finger, and Tracy outlined that "there's no clear next steps yet" in Anthony's recovery. The team is expected to take their time with the 22-year-old, and he will likely remain at his current level of activity for a "little while" according to Tracy. A return to action with the Red Sox in mid-to-late August might be the best-case scenario at this point for Anthony.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Continuing rehab in Florida
Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed Thursday that Anthony's (finger) recent follow-up appointment with Dr. Gary Lourie revealed no new information about his injury, and the outfielder will continue to rehab at the Red Sox's complex in Florida through at least the All-Star break, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Anthony is still trying to get over the hump in his recovery from the partially torn tendon in his right ring finger that has kept him on the shelf since May 7. Though Tracy noted that Anthony's finger is healing as expected, the 23-year-old has struggled to regain full strength in his hand, which has thus far prevented him from starting a hitting progression. Until Anthony reaches that step in the recovery process, the Red Sox won't be able to map out a minor-league rehab assignment for him. Though Anthony remains without an official timeline to return from the 60-day injured list, fantasy managers can safely rule him out through the rest of July.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Slated to see hand specialist
Anthony (finger) will visit hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie in Florida during the upcoming week, Chad Finn of The Boston Globe reports.
Anthony is headed to Boston's facility in Fort Myers to continue his injury rehabilitation, and while he's in Florida, he'll book a visit with the Atlanta-based Dr. Lourie. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Sunday that the visit to the hand doctor and Anthony's time in Florida are "for peace of mind" and to get the young outfielder to "a spot where he can focus each day on just pounding away at getting that hand healthy." Anthony has yet to resume a hitting program nine weeks after suffering a partially torn ligament in his right ring finger while taking a swing, and he remains without a clear timetable for a return from the 60-day injured list.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Shifts to 60-day IL
The Red Sox transferred Anthony (finger/wrist) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.
The 22-year-old has already been shelved nearly two months due to a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger, so the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his return timeline. Interim manager Chad Tracy said Wednesday that Anthony hasn't made significant progress in his recovery recently, so the outfielder is likely to be out through at least the All-Star break.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Still not ready to hit
Interim manager Chad Tracy said Wednesday that Anthony (finger/wrist) hasn't made any substantive progress in his recovery back in Boston since the Red Sox began their road trip last weekend, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Though a recent MRI on a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger showed healing, Anthony is still experiencing some discomfort that has prevented him from initiating a hitting progression. He'll simply have to wait until the pain subsides before he can make any meaningful strides in his recovery, leaving Anthony without a definitive timeline for a return. The young outfielder has been on the shelf since May 7.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Follow-up MRI clean
Anthony (finger) underwent a follow-up MRI on Tuesday that came back clean, but he's not yet cleared to swing a bat, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
The 22-year-old has attempted to swing a bat a couple times but has felt pain when swinging, so interim manager Chad Tracy said the club is taking it day-by-day with Anthony's progress. The MRI results are an encouraging development, but the young outfielder still has a long way to go before potentially coming off the injured list.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Continues to feel pain in hand
Anthony continues to experience pain in his injured right hand when swinging, though he still believes he is progressing in his recovery, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Anthony has been out of action since early May due to a sprained ligament at the base of his right ring finger. He's resumed swinging a bat and then been shut down on multiple occasions, as he hasn't yet been able to shed the discomfort caused by the injury. Anthony explained Saturday, "[it's] progressing a lot slower than I had imagined in the beginning of this but definitely progressing, which is the biggest thing. It's just pain in my hand. That's what it was until it's not that, I'll be here. But as soon as it feels like it starts to get a whole lot better, I'm sure we'll have a better idea of where we're at and how it's going to go from there." The star slugger isn't expected to be ready to return to action until at least early July, and he'll likely need to be able to swing at full capacity without pain before the Red Sox feel comfortable activating him.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Still not swinging
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Monday that Anthony (finger) remains shut down from swinging a bat, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Anthony landed on the injured list May 7 due to what the team initially labeled as a right wrist sprain before later reclassifying the injury as a sprained ligament on the base of his right ring finger. The 22-year-old outfielder had made enough progress to resume taking dry swings in late May before being shut down when he experienced renewed soreness while trying to hit off a tee. He's remained in a holding pattern in his recovery ever since, making it increasingly likely that he'll be shelved through at least the end of the month. Anthony's ongoing absence should continue to open up a regular spot in the lineup for Masataka Yoshida when the Red Sox face right-handed pitching.

Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Shut down from swinging
Anthony (finger) felt discomfort while hitting off a tee Thursday and has been shut down from swinging, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
This is the second time that Anthony has had to pause his swinging progression due to a setback. Interim manager Chad Tracy said the 22-year-old's shutdown period will last a few days, and there is still no timetable in place for his return.
