Top David McCabe News

  • Braves' David McCabe: Completes recovery from Tommy John

McCabe (elbow) has gone 5-for-28 with a home run, 15.2 percent walk rate and a 33.3 percent strikeout rate in eight games since being activated from High-A Rome's 60-day injured list July 30 and assigned to Double-A Mississippi.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in early February, McCabe's availability for the entire 2024 season appeared to be in doubt, but he evidently made rapid progress in his recovery. He still seems to be operating with some restrictions with his throwing, as the corner infielder has played exclusively as a designated hitter for Mississippi thus far. The switch-hitting McCabe split time between Rome and Single-A Augusta in 2023, slashing .276/.385/.450 with 17 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 123 games.

  • Braves' David McCabe: On mend from Tommy John surgery

High-A Rome placed McCabe on its 60-day injured list March 26 after he underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow over the winter, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.

As a position player, McCabe will face a shorter recovery from Tommy John surgery than a pitcher, but he may still miss the whole 2024 season due to the timing of his procedure. McCabe, who most recently slashed .278/.448/.361 with six doubles in 21 games in the Arizona Fall League, shouldn't need much more time at High-A before getting his first exposure to Double-A pitching.

  • Braves' David McCabe: Heading to AFL

McCabe will play for the Salt River Rafters this year in the Arizona Fall League.

McCabe, a 23-year-old switch-hitting third baseman Atlanta selected in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, had a strong first full season in pro ball, although he was old for the levels he played at. He posted a 145 wRC+ with Single-A Augusta and then slashed .281/.388/.428 with nine home runs and nine steals in 81 games for High-A Rome. His 30.7 percent hard-hit rate and 14.5 percent soft-hit rate on the season were strong marks, and it's encouraging that he maintained a 15.2 percent walk rate at High-A while cutting his strikeout rate from 26.7 percent to 19.0 percent.
