Mets' Kodai Senga: Collects fourth save
Senga recorded his fourth save of the season in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Padres, giving up one run on two hits and a walk in one inning. He failed to strike out a batter.
The right-hander put three straight baserunners aboard with one out in the ninth to make things interesting, but Senga was able to get pinch-hitter Austin Hays to ground into a double play to escape the jam. Devin Williams (shoulder) isn't expected back until sometime in September, so Senga should continue holding down the fort as the Mets' closer for another couple weeks or so. Wednesday's run was the first he's allowed over six appearances in August, and Senga has yet to blow a save chance.

Senga continues to experience a seamless transition into New York's closer role while Devin Williams (shoulder) is on the injured list. The right-hander has now successfully converted each of his first three save chances, and he's also submitted five consecutive scoreless outings as a reliever. Given Senga's 9.66 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 31.2 innings as a starter, it's hard to envision the Mets moving the hurler back into the rotation again this year even after Williams returns.

The right-hander has now recorded both of the Mets' saves since Devin Williams landed on the injured list Monday with a right shoulder strain, suggesting he'd the team's top ninth-inning option in the short term. That's a notable development after Senga went 0-8 with an 8.66 ERA over his first 13 appearances (eight starts) this season before losing his rotation spot. He has yet to allow a run and owns a 0.75 WHIP in four August relief outings.

The Mets do not expect Williams to be out long with his right shoulder strain, but he will miss at least the next couple weeks after landing on the 15-day injured list Monday. Mets' Kodai Senga: Yields three runs in loss
Senga (0-8) took the loss against the Marlins on Friday, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four across four-plus innings.
Senga was thrust into the starting role Friday after Freddy Peralta was scratched ahead of Monday's trade deadline. Senga retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, but the script flipped in the fifth after he allowed the first three batters of the frame to reach base, which resulted in the veteran right-hander being tagged for three runs, and eventually, the loss. Senga has not been credited with a win since June 12, 2025 against the Nationals, and for the 2026 season, he has an 8.66 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 44.2 innings. Senga could still see some starts over the final two months of the season depending on what the Mets do with their rotation before the deadline.

The Mets elected to roll with the struggling Senga as a bulk reliever for the first time in his major-league career, and the decision may have helped yield one of the hurler's better outings of the season. Mets' Kodai Senga: Sent to bullpen
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Senga will be moved to the bullpen, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
Senga's demotion to a relief role comes after he walked five batters and allowed seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings during Tuesday's loss to the Cubs, bringing his record to 0-6 and inflating his ERA and WHIP to 10.08 and 1.92, respectively, over his seven starts on the season. Though the right-hander will be available to make his debut out of the bullpen during this weekend's series versus Philadelphia, he could be needed to fill a bulk-relief role behind an opener while the Mets still have a couple of holes in the rotation. The Mets aren't necessarily closing the door on Senga re-emerging as a starter at some point, but he'll presumably need to show improved form while working out of the bullpen for an extended period before the team goes down that road again.
