Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting out versus Fried
Abreu is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Yankees.
With lefty Max Fried drawing the start for the Yankees, the left-handed-swinging Abreu will yield to Nate Eaton in right field. Abreu went just 3-for-21 with eight strikeouts down the stretch of the regular season after returning from a calf injury.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Taking seat Thursday
Abreu isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game versus Toronto, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Abreu will get a breather Thursday after going 2-for-11 with a run scored and four strikeouts since returning from the injured list Sunday. Rob Refsnyder will fill the void in right field and bat eighth.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Returning to action Sunday
The Red Sox activated Abreu (calf) from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
He'll end up missing a little over a month with the calf strain and will start designated hitter and bat eighth Sunday against righty Joe Boyle. The Red Sox are tentatively scheduled to face five right-handed pitchers to start the upcoming week before potentially facing a lefty in the regular-season finale Sept. 28 versus the Tigers, so the left-handed-hitting Abreu should get plenty of opportunities to contribute in the final week.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Likely returning Sunday
Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that he expects Abreu (calf) to return from the injured list Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Abreu has been sidelined with a strained calf for more than a month, but it appears he is nearing the end of his recovery. The 26-year-old outfielder is slashing .253/.325/.486 on the season and will almost certainly reclaim his role as Boston's primary right fielder once activated.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not returning Saturday
Abreu (calf) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rays, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
Abreu, who has missed almost a month with a right calf strain, worked out Friday and flew to join the team in Tampa Bay on Saturday, but he isn't in the lineup. It's unclear when Abreu will be activated from the 10-day injured list, but it could be any day.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could be activated Saturday
Abreu (calf) will fly to Tampa Bay on Saturday, and a decision regarding his activation from the 10-day injured list is expected to be made shortly after, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Abreu had a good workout at Fenway on Friday, and he'll join the team in Florida ahead of Saturday's game. It's unclear if he'll be activated Saturday or Sunday specifically, but a return during Boston's series in Tampa Bay is expected. The outfielder has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a strained right calf.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Will not travel with team
Abreu (calf) will not fly with the Red Sox to Tampa Bay after Thursday's game and instead will remain in Boston to get in another workout at Fenway Park on Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
If Abreu's workout goes well, he could fly out on his own to rejoin the team Saturday or Sunday. Abreu's recovery from a right calf strain has not come along as quickly as hoped, as he's already missed a month of action and there still isn't a clear target date for his return to the active roster.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Day-to-day, eyeing weekend return
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Abreu (calf) isn't ready to return from the 10-day injured list, but the skipper is "hopeful" that the outfielder will be ready for activation at some point during the team's weekend series at Tampa Bay, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
MLB.com reported Saturday that Abreu was running at about 85 percent intensity as he works his way back from a right calf strain. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Cora noted that Abreu was scheduled to do some sprinting Wednesday, so if the 26-year-old is able to run at closer to 100 percent speed in that workout, it could be enough for him to return to action this weekend. The Red Sox have been leaning on a committee of Rob Refsnyder, Nate Eaton and Nick Sogard in right field while the 2024 Gold Glove Award winner has been on the shelf.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not ready to come off IL yet
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Abreu felt some soreness in his right calf after his recent heavy workload and it's not clear when the outfielder will be activated from the 10-day injured list, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Abreu's activation was considered imminent and likely to happen at some point during Boston's series against the Athletics that runs through Thursday. While his return could still occur any day now, it appears more up in the air than it had been. Abreu has been sidelined since mid-August.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Closing in on return
Manager Alex Cora said that Abreu (calf) progressed to running the bases Sunday, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
The 26-year-old is trending toward returning from the injured list this week, and getting back to running the bases is a significant hurdle to clear. Abreu has been on the shelf nearly a month due to a calf strain, but he may not require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Red Sox.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Could return within one week
Abreu (calf) is on track to return within the next week, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.
Abreu was cleared to participate in running drills over the weekend, and the team has since provided a more concrete timeline for his return from a right calf strain. Skipper Alex Cora noted that activating Abreu over the weekend against the Yankees isn't a possibility, but it's looking like a return during the team's series against the Athletics, which runs from Sept. 16 to Sept. 18, is the most likely scenario.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Feels OK after running
Abreu (calf) reported no issues after taking part in running sessions Friday and Saturday, MLB.com reports.
Boston manager Alex Cora said Saturday the outfielder came out of the two sessions feeling "OK," but he stopped short of offering a timeline for the outfielder's return. Abreu has been on the shelf since Aug. 21 due to a right calf strain.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Scheduled to run Saturday
Abreu (calf) will run Saturday for the first time in over a week, MLB.com reports.
The Red Sox suddenly find themselves in an outfield bind after Roman Anthony (oblique) landed on the injured list. Getting Abreu back would help, and Saturday's session will potentially help determine a timeline for his return. He attempted to run about 10 days ago and didn't bounce back from that session.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Yet to resume running
Abreu (calf) has yet to resume running at full effort as of Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
Abreu had intended to try running Monday, but he didn't receive medical clearance to do so. The outfielder still expects to resume running at some point later this week but is waiting for the go-ahead from trainers. With Abreu's recovery from a right calf strain going more slowly than anticipated, he appears unlikely to return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the week.

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Won't return on homestand
Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Friday that Abreu (calf) is unlikely to return from the 10-day injured list before the conclusion of a homestand Sept. 3, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Abreu did some light sprints earlier this week and it seems as though it didn't go as well as hoped. He's been receiving treatment on his injured right calf and will try to run again Monday. Roman Anthony has been serving as the club's everyday right fielder since Abreu was injured last week.
