  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Faces live hitter

Burnes (elbow) threw to a hitter Friday for the first time post-surgery, MLB.com reports.

The rehabbing Burnes faced the rehabbing Jordan Lawlar (wrist), marking the first time either player has faced a live opponent during their respective recoveries. Next up for Burnes is another batting practice session Tuesday. The right-hander is expected to return midseason, likely following the All-Star break.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Facing hitters Friday

Burnes (elbow) is expected to begin throwing live batting practice Friday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Burnes will first have to make it through two more bullpen sessions, but assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks, he'll be cleared to face live hitters for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June. The 31-year-old righty said he also expects to begin playing in rehab games in a few weeks and is aiming to make his season debut for the D-backs around the All-Star break.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Throws bullpen session

Burnes (elbow) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports.

Burnes has been throwing occasional bullpen sessions since spring training -- Tuesday's session was his fourth -- so there was nothing particularly notable about Tuesday's activity. "He just wants to make sure everything is feeling right, he's duplicating his delivery," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said of Burnes. The pitcher is still on track to return near or after the All-Star break.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Adds curveballs in BP session

Burnes (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Burnes threw a second bullpen session and mixed in curveballs after tossing 15 pitches (all fastballs) last Friday. The plan going forward calls for the right-hander to pitch again this coming Friday, and to then complete two sessions per week for the next month while incorporating all his pitches. At the moment, Burnes is estimated to be throwing at about an 80-to-85 percent effort level.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Throws BP session Friday

Burnes (elbow) tossed 15 pitches during Friday's bullpen session, Nick Piecoro and Jose Romero of The Arizona Republic report.

It'san encouraging development for Burnes, with Friday's bullpen session being his first since undergoing Tommy John surgery in June. All 15 of his pitches were fastballs or sinkers, and he reached a top velocity of 91 mph. Burnes' current plan is to toss two bullpen sessions a week, and the 31-year-old right-hander is aiming to make his 2026 debut around the All-Star break in July.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Heading to 60-day IL

The Diamondbacks placed Burnes (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Sunday.

The move was merely procedural, as Burnes is targeting a season debut around the All-Star break while he completes his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Zac Gallen, who re-signed with Arizona on a one-year deal.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Burnes: Aims for mound work in late spring

Burnes (elbow) expects to throw off a mound by the end of spring training, Jack Sommers of SI.com reports.

Burnes also reiterated his goal of making his season debut around the All-Star break. The veteran right-hander is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which he had last June. A midseason return would appear to be a best-case scenario for Burnes, who is entering the second year of a six-year, $210 million contract.
