Estrada has been shelved for the past three weeks with right elbow tendinitis but has been cleared to return after making a couple rehab appearances. The 27-year-old had a shaky start to the season before getting hurt, posting a 5.14 ERA and 8:5 K:BB over seven innings, but the right-hander will slide back into a setup role ahead of closer Mason Miller.

Estrada landed on the injured list April 10 due to tightness in his right elbow. The righty reliever resumed playing catch shortly thereafter and is now pitching in games again. Estrada tossed a clean inning with one strikeout in his first rehab appearance Friday and may not need a lengthy stint in the minors before he's brought back up to the big-league bullpen.

Estrada was one of four San Diego relievers to have pitched three of the previous four days, but he was apparently deemed good to go for a save chance Saturday. Usual closer Robert Suarez had also seen a similar workload and was held back from pitching in this contest. Estrada is now second on the team with three saves, though he's no threat to Suarez's closer role, as he's instead functioned as a setup man throughout the year. Overall, Estrada has a 2.93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 60:16 K:BB while adding 21 holds and three blown saves across 43 innings.

Top relievers Robert Suarez, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon had all pitched the previous two days, allowing Estrada a chance to convert his second save of the season. He's earned both of his saves a week apart while also functioning as a setup man when the Padres' bullpen is fresher. Estrada (3-1) blew a save but was credited with the win in Thursday's victory versus the Brewers. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters over one inning.
Primary closer Robert Suarez had pitched on back-to-back days, so San Diego turned to Estrada with a two-run lead in the ninth inning, though the latter had taken the mound on consecutive days as well. Estrada couldn't close things out, giving up a pair of runs on a walk, a single, a wild pitch and a double. To his credit, the right-hander kept the game tied by striking out the final two batters he faced, and he ended up in the win column when Jake Cronenworth smacked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the frame. Estrada relayed prior to Wednesday's game that he had been dealing with an illness, but it didn't deter the Padres from turning to him in the eighth inning while they faced a 3-2 deficit. Though Estrada let in a run to give the Athletics a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, Donovan Solano tied the game with a two-run home run later in the frame before Jackson Merrill hit a walk-off blast in the bottom of the ninth. Estrada hasn't been used since Wednesday, but with his bout with the illness now a few more days in the rear-view mirror, he should be available for Sunday's series finale against the Mets.
Estrada (2-0) earned the win over the Yankees on Sunday, striking out all five batters he faced.
Estrada threw 20 of 26 pitches for strikes and got all five of his punchouts on swinging strikes. The right-handed reliever has now struck out each of the last 10 batters he's faced swinging to set a Padres record.
