Player Outlook
After breaking out as a full-time starter with the White Sox in 2024, Garrett Crochet was traded to the Red Sox last winter and established himself as one of the best pitchers in MLB during 2025. He posted an 18-5 record with a 2.59 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 46 walks across 205.1 innings while leading the league with 255 strikeouts. Despite setting a career-high workload by nearly 60 innings, the left-hander still averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball and maintained excellent control, with his 5.7 percent walk rate ranking 10th among qualified starters. Now entering his age-27 season and third year as a full-time starter, it's possible Crochet has yet to reach his ceiling. He's already a true ace with a high floor given his strikeout numbers, and he'll enter 2026 as one of the top candidates for the AL Cy Young Award.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Shuts down Reds in opener

Crochet (1-0) picked up the win Thursday against the Reds, allowing no runs on three hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out eight. The All-Star southpaw found himself in midseason form in his season debut, firing six shutout frames and also notably escaping a bases-loaded jam to close his final frame. Crochet was also able to throw 80 pitches Thursday, and his final start during spring training saw him hurl 89 pitches. He should build up to closer to a full workload in his next start, which is slated to come in Houston next week.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Unfazed by spring line

Crochet allowed six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings in Saturday's spring start against Atlanta. Crochet finished the Grapefruit League with an unsightly 7.36 ERA over 14.2 innings. Both the pitcher and Boston manager Alex Cora downplayed the spring results to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Crochet attributed Saturday's line to missed locations and tinkering with a pitch mix he would normally avoid in a more competitive environment. The left-hander is set to pitch Opening Day on the road against the Reds.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Next spring start coming Monday

Crochet is slated to start a minor-league game Monday after having his scheduled Grapefruit League start Sunday against the Twins pushed back, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. With five scheduled off days over the first month, the Red Sox plan to have Crochet pitch on a six-day schedule early in the season to manage his workload, per McCaffrey. Crochet said he prefers pitching every fifth day, but he's trying to be adaptable. In three spring starts, Crochet has allowed six runs in 8.2 innings with five strikeouts and a walk, but he didn't express much concern about his lackluster results. Crochet said that his velocity has been "a little down" from where he anticipated, but noted that he's more concerned about "pounding in the strike zone" at this stage of the spring. McCaffrey adds that Crochet is lined up for one final Grapefruit League start Saturday, although that would fall on four days' rest after Monday's spring game.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Makes spring debut

Crochet allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless innings in Thursday's spring start against the Rays. Crochet made his Grapefruit League debut, throwing 23 pitches (14 strikes) in his first step on the way to an Opening Day start. Other than a lack of strikeouts, it was an unremarkable outing for the left-hander, who led the majors in 2025 with 255 punchouts. He used most of his repertoire, including a splitter he'd like to use more of in 2026.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Fans 11 during Game 1 gem

Crochet earned the win during Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Yankees after giving up one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters across 7.2 innings. He did not issue a walk. A second-inning home run from Anthony Volpe put Crochet and the Red Sox in an early hole, but the 26-year-old southpaw responded by retiring the next 17 batters he faced. The streak ended with an eighth-inning single from Volpe, but Crochet stayed on the mound for one more at-bat, striking out Austin Wells to finish a 117-pitch start. If the Red Sox take care of business and eliminate their biggest rival from the postseason, Crochet would be likely to make his next start Sunday in Game 2 of the ALDS against the AL East-champion Blue Jays.

The southpaw produced an impressive 2.59 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 255 strikeouts over 205.1 innings in 32 starts, including a complete-game shutout, during the regular season. Crochet has gone 3-0, while posting a 3.29 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 27.1 innings in four starts against the Yankees in 2025.

Crochet (16-5) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out 12 over six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Yankees. Crochet matched his season high for strikeouts in a game after racking up a dozen in this win. He's logged a quality start in five of his last six outings, the exception being his seven-run showing versus the Guardians on Sept. 2. The southpaw now has eight starts of 10-plus strikeouts this season and leads the majors with a total of 240 strikeouts. His K/9 of 11.29 is second only to Dylan Cease among qualified starters. Crochet has added a 2.63 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 191.1 innings through 30 starts, and he'll look to keep rolling in a road start versus the Rays in his next outing.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Dominant in 15th win

Crochet (15-5) allowed three hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over seven shutout innings to earn the win over the Athletics on Monday. Just one of the three hits went for extra bases. This was Crochet's fifth scoreless outing of the season, and he reached the double-digit mark in strikeouts for the seventh time in an impressive bounce-back performance after his season-worst outing against Cleveland last week. Crochet is now at a 2.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 228:42 K:BB through 185.1 innings over 29 starts. The southpaw's next start is expected to be at home versus the Yankees this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Grinds through six frames

Crochet allowed seven runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out four in six innings Tuesday against the Guardians. He did not factor into the decision. Crochet was roughed up for a season-high seven runs and tied his career-worst mark by allowing four home runs. He allowed just one run through five and completely imploded in the sixth, allowing six runs on three separate homers, but he was spared the loss with the Red Sox scoring 11 runs. Tuesday's blowup put a serious dent in Crochet's case for the AL Cy Young Award, but he still sits pretty with a 2.67 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. He'll aim to rebound next week in a road start versus the Athletics.

In 25 starts this season, Crochet has a 2.43 ERA and a 196:41 K:BB across 159.1 innings. He's on pace to face the Yankees next weekend.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Strikes out 10 in no-decision

Crochet allowed three hits and three walks while striking out 10 over seven innings in a no-decision Tuesday versus the Angels. Crochet was excellent, but the Boston offense supplied just one run of support while he was in the game. He's allowed one run or fewer in seven of his last 10 starts and in 10 of 17 starts overall. This was also his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the year. Crochet has a 2.06 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 135:31 K:BB across 109.1 innings. His next start is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Reds.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Nabs win in uneven performance

Crochet (6-4) earned the win against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six innings. The five earned runs were a season-worst mark for Crochet, but he still managed to walk away with a victory thanks to a potent Boston offense. Much of the damage against the southpaw was inflicted by Austin Wells, who tagged Crochet for a three-run homer in the second inning and a run-scoring double in the fourth. Despite the damage to his ERA, Crochet impressed by inducing 15 whiffs and racking up nine punchouts, including three strikeouts of Aaron Judge. Crochet has fanned 32 batters across his past three starts and leads the majors with 110 punchouts on the season.

His ERA is down to 1.98 with a 1.06 WHIP and 101 strikeouts, tied with MacKenzie Gore for the MLB lead, across 82 innings this season. Crochet will have a tough test in his next outing, currently scheduled as a road matchup with the rival Yankees.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Strikes out 11 in losing effort

Crochet dropped to 4-4 on the season in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Brewers, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 11 over 6.2 innings. After surrendering a leadoff home run to Jackson Chourio to begin the game, Crochet righted the ship and turned in yet another quality start. He has now posted six straight starts of allowing two earned runs or fewer, and he has gone no fewer than five frames in any start all season. Crochet owns a 2.04 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 75 innings in his first season in Boston and looks every bit like the ace the Red Sox had expected him to be when they acquired him over the winter.

The 26-year-old southpaw has a mediocre 4-3 record, but he boasts a 1.98 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and a 78/22 K:BB across 68.1 innings spanning 11 starts. It was Crochet's fifth quality start of the season, and his 65 strikeouts are second most in the American League behind Carlos Rodon (67), while his 1.93 ERA ranks fifth among qualified starters. Crochet's next start is slated for next weekend at home against Atlanta.

The southpaw has now completed at least five frames in each of his eight starts this season, yielding two earned runs or fewer in seven of them. He boasts a 2.02 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 56:20 K:BB across 49 innings and lines up for a road matchup with the Royals next weekend.

  • Red Sox's Garrett Crochet: Goes seven innings in win

Crochet (3-2) got the win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six in seven innings. Crochet was dominant outside of one troubling inning in the third, during which he gave up a double to Bo Bichette followed by a two-run homer to Vladimir Guerrero. Crochet went on to allow just one base hit the rest of the way and recorded his third start this season of at least seven innings. His command has been a bit shaky lately with eight walks over his last two starts, but Crochet still dons a stellar 2.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 50:18 K:BB in 44 innings. He lines up to complete a two-start week at home against Minnesota this weekend.
