Astros' Yainer Diaz: Getting rare rest Saturday
Diaz is not part of the starting lineup Saturday versus the Orioles.
This will be Diaz's first day off since Aug. 10, as he's been working as Houston's DH on days when he doesn't start behind the plate. He's done fine with a .279 batting average, two homers and five RBI in the 11 games since his last day out of the lineup, so his absence Saturday seems to be simply a rest day. Victor Caratini is behind the plate for the Astros on Saturday, while Jose Altuve is getting a turn at DH.

Astros' Yainer Diaz: Goes yard Thursday
Diaz went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 7-2 win over the Orioles.
Diaz provided the Astros' last runs of the game in the third inning. He's been fairly steady of late, going 11-for-35 (.314) with two homers and five RBI over his last nine games. For the season, the catcher is up to 18 homers, 55 RBI, 46 runs scored, one stolen base and a .254/.283/.419 slash line across 114 games.

Diaz amassed at least three RBI for the second time this month and the seventh time this season. The backstop now has four multi-hit games in August, and he's been a steady bat in the middle of Houston's order throughout 2025. Since the beginning of July, Diaz is batting a strong .281 with seven homers, seven doubles and 19 RBI covering 128 at-bats (34 games).

While his average has been on the rise for several weeks, Diaz has now begun to hit for power, hitting three homers and two doubles with 10 RBI across his last seven games. The Houston backstop picked up his 16th two-bagger of the season off Miami starter Sandy Alcantara in the fourth inning to plate two runs. Diaz has been a steady contributor since the All-Star break, hitting .300 (18-for-60) with five doubles, two homers, nine RBI and seven runs scored across 16 contests. Diaz delivered his 15th home run of the season in the sixth inning and has now gone deep in consecutive games. Diaz went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 7-4 win over the Cubs.
Diaz has had some struggles at the plate recently, going just 3-for-20 with one RBI and six strikeouts over his last five games. He's started just three of the last five games while batting seventh or eighth in those games after spending much of the first three weeks of June hitting between second and sixth in the order. Houston hasn't settled on one particular cleanup hitter for much of the season, and much of the lineup is in flux against right-handed pitchers. Diaz has had some struggles this year -- he's slashing .245/.276/.396 with 10 homers, 34 RBI and 30 runs scored over 71 contests.
