Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Passes concussion tests
Nationals manager Blake Butera said after Sunday's 4-2 loss to Atlanta that Chaparro (head) passed a concussion test, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
A late addition to the starting nine after Luis Garcia was scratched, Chaparro grounded out in his first plate appearance of the day, then was struck in the helmet by a pitch in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded. Chaparro was able to take his base and was credited with an RBI, but the Nationals removed him from the contest in the top of the fifth, seemingly as a precaution. Assuming Chaparro doesn't experience any symptoms leading up to Monday's series opener in Philadelphia, he could soon find himself back in the starting nine. Per Zuckerman, Butera said after the game that Garcia didn't play Sunday because "something was really close" on a trade, and the Nationals could finalize a deal prior to Monday's deadline.

Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Departs after HBP
Chaparro was removed from Sunday's game against Atlanta after being struck in the head by a pitch, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
The 27-year-old picked up an RBI the hard way when he was hit in the head by a pitch with the bases loaded during the third inning, and he was eventually pulled after initially staying in the game. Chaparro is presumably being evaluated for a concussion and should be considered day-to-day.

Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Power surge continues Friday
Chaparro went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's loss to Atlanta.
The 27-year-old replaced Luis Garcia (knee) in the seventh inning and took Elieser Hernandez deep in the ninth. Chaparro is up to six homers in the majors this season, and five of them have come in 10 games since the All-Star break, a stretch in which he's batting .360 (9-for-25) with two doubles, eight runs and 13 RBI. Garcia's name was already showing up in trade rumors, and if he's removed from the picture at first base either due to injury or being dealt, Chaparro could get more consistent playing time over the final weeks of the season.

Chaparro went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Monday's win over Colorado.
Chaparro unloaded on the first pitch he saw Monday, walloping a three-run homer to open the scoring in the first inning. The first baseman has gone 5-for-11 (.455) with three homers and 11 RBI over his past three games after totaling one long ball and seven RBI across 31 contests before the All-Star break. The right-handed-hitting Chaparro is used almost exclusively in a short-side platoon role against left-handed pitching, with Daylen Lile replacing him in the seventh inning after Colorado brought in a right-handed reliever.

Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Homers twice Friday
Chaparro went 4-for-5 with two home runs, eight total RBI and four total runs scored in Friday's 23-4 win over the A's.
Chaparro went yard twice in this game, launching a two-run blast off Jose Suarez in the fifth inning and a three-run long ball off Yunior Tur in the seventh. Chaparro has three homers this season, and all of them have come since the beginning of July. He's played just seven games since the beginning of the month but has been productive in a small sample, hitting .429 with a 1.538 OPS in 15 plate appearances. Those numbers aren't sustainable, but Chaparro could be a player to look at as a waiver pickup as long as he's carrying a hot bat.

Getting the start at first base and batting third against left-hander Payton Tolle, Chaparro gave the Nationals a quick lead when he launched a 95.3-mph fastball over the Green Monster in the first inning. It was his first long ball of the season, but even with that showing, he was replaced by pinch hitter Luis Garcia once Tolle was out of the game. Chaparro appears stuck in a short-side platoon role, and through 26 big-league games this season, he's slashing just .170/.328/.298.

Getting the start at first base and batting third, Chaparro crossed the plate in the first inning after getting hit by a pitch, but it was his only contribution in a 10-5 loss. Since returning to the majors in mid-May, Chaparro is slashing just .172/.368/.241 with zero homers in 38 plate appearances, but for now he'll continue to operate as a short-side platoon partner for Luis Garcia.

The Nationals recalled Chaparro from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.
Chaparro made Washington's Opening Day roster but played in only three games before being demoted to Rochester, where he's remained except for a one-day stint with the Nationals in late April. He's gone 2-for-9 with a walk and a double in the big leagues and has an .801 OPS with six homers in 35 games at the Triple-A level this season.

Luis Garcia is shifting to first base and Daylen Lile should be the primary right fielder, leaving DH available for Chaparro. The 26-year-old hasn't done much yet in the majors to suggest he's capable of providing consistent offense, however, slashing .203/.268/.358 in 205 plate appearances for the Nats over the last two years with just five homers. He's also struggled this spring, batting .154 (6-for-39) with two home runs and a 6:12 BB:K. If Chaparro can't step up, he could be the player who loses his spot when it's time for Dylan Crews or Robert Hassell -- both of whom will begin the year with Triple-A Rochester -- to get another look.

Nationals' Andres Chaparro: Still in running for starting job
Chaparro went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.
The 26-year-old took Tom Cosgrove deep in the fifth inning, Chaparro's second homer of the spring. He hasn't exactly impressed in camp, batting .263 (5-for-19) over 10 appearances, but his main competition for the starting job at first base, prospect Abimelec Ortiz, has gone just 2-for-16 with six strikeouts. The biggest threat to Chaparro's job security this season might actually come from Luis Garcia, if the Nationals decide they can no longer live with his glove at second base. Chaparro will also need to improve his own performance to stick around -- in 205 career big-league plate appearances, he's managed just a .203/.268/.358 slash line with five homers.

Chaparro came through with a bases-clearing single off Chris Sale in the fifth inning to spark a rally, though Washington couldn't finish the comeback. Getting the start at first base and batting sixth against southpaw Max Fried, Chaparro didn't have much success at the plate until the ninth inning, when he crushed a hanging curve from Paul Blackburn 411 feet over the left-field fence. It was Chaparro's first homer in 10 games with the Nationals this season, and since being called back up in mid-August, the 26-year-old has gone 4-for-13 (.308) with a double, a homer and a 3:4 BB:K, primarily as a short-side platoon option. Wednesday's long ball off a right-hander might encourage interim manager Miguel Cairo to expand Chaparro's role over the final weeks of the season.
