Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera: Remains longshot to return in 2025

Cabrera (ankle) said Monday that there's a "small window" for him to return this season, but it remains an unlikely proposition, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Cabrera underwent surgery in mid-May to repair a fracture and ligament damage in his left ankle. He has been walking around lately without the aid of a scooter or boot, but he cannot jog yet or perform baseball activities. Even if the Yankees manage to make a postseason run, it's likely Cabrera will be held out until next season.
The Yankees transferred Cabrera (ankle) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday.
Cabrera suffered a fracture as well as ligament damage to his left ankle May 12 and underwent surgery soon thereafter. While the Yankees haven't officially ruled Cabrera out for the season, the infielder is unlikely to return until late in September or perhaps October, if the club is able to make a playoff run. With that in mind, Cabrera's move to the 60-day IL is merely procedural, as it opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Jayvien Sandridge, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that there is a "small possibility" that Cabrera (ankle) could return to action this season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
A few days after Cabrera was diagnosed with a fractured ankle in mid-May, Boone said it's "probably unlikely" that the utility man will play again this season. That sentiment hasn't changed, though Boone reiterated the same point with more positive wording Thursday. Cabrera underwent surgery on the ankle to repair both a fracture and ligament damage, and he's still wearing a protective boot while getting around on a scooter, so there remains a long road ahead before he's ready to play again.

Doctors found ligament damage around Cabrera's fractured left ankle, so his surgery was a little more invasive than hoped. While there is no official timetable for the utility player's return, Boone seems pessimistic about the possibility. Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas have handled third base for the Yankees since Cabrera was injured, but DJ LeMahieu could become the regular there once Jazz Chisholm (oblique) returns to play second base.

The Yankees placed Cabrera on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left ankle fracture.
The diagnosis doesn't come as a surprise after Cabrera had to be taken off the field in an ambulance in Monday's game versus the Mariners. It's not clear at this point how long Cabrera might be sidelined, but certainly the absence will be a lengthy one. DJ LeMahieu (calf/hip) is taking Cabrera's spot on the roster and could receive the bulk of the reps at third base in Cabrera's spot, as well.

Cabrera was injured on a play at the plate in the top of the ninth inning as he attempted an awkward slide. He was eventually taken off the field in an ambulance after being attended to by the team's training staff. The Yankees later reported that Cabrera was taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation, per Kuty.

Cabrera took Rays right-hander Taj Bradley deep in the fifth inning for the switch-hitter's first homer of the year. Although he's batting a strong .308 over 39 at-bats (13 games) to begin the season, Cabrera now has just one extra-base hit to go with zero stolen bases, so he doesn't carry much fantasy upside while regularly batting at the bottom of New York's lineup.
