Top John Brebbia News

  • John Brebbia: Elects free agency

Brebbia cleared waivers Friday and elected free agency.

Brebbia was DFA'd by the Rockies on Wednesday after giving up five earned runs in just 4.1 innings with the big club. The 36-year-old has performed much better in the minors (4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP), so he may still be able to land a minor-league contract on the open market.

  • Rockies' John Brebbia: DFA'd by Colorado

The Rockies designated Brebbia for assignment on Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Brebbia's time in the majors was short lived after being called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on June 21. The 36-year-old had two scoreless outings before making his third and final appearance against Miami on Tuesday, when he allowed five earned runs off five hits in one inning. Colorado recalled Gabriel Hughes to take Brebbia's spot on the active roster.

  • Rockies' John Brebbia: Summoned to big leagues

The Rockies selected Brebbia's contract from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday.

He'll be joining the big-league bullpen as a replacement for right-hander Blas Castano (pectoral), who was moved to the 15-day injured list. The 36-year-old Brebbia caught on with the Rockies on a minor-league deal in late May and was highly effective over his seven appearances for Albuquerque, striking out 10 over nine scoreless frames. Brebbia could quickly settle into a high-leverage role in a Colorado bullpen that's lacking dependable arms.

  • Rockies' John Brebbia: Lands with Rox

Brebbia signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Thursday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Brebbia inked an NRI deal with Colorado in December but failed to make the team out of spring training and was let go by the club shortly before Opening Day. Now back with the Rockies, the 35-year-old righty will look to make it back to the majors with an organization that doesn't boast much in terms of bullpen depth, though he will likely need to improve upon his 6.20 Triple-A ERA before drawing consideration for a promotion.

  • John Brebbia: Triggers opt-out in MiLB deal

The Twins released Brebbia on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Brebbia triggered the opt-out clause in his minor-league contract after the Twins decided not to promote him. The veteran reliever held a 6.20 ERA but a more promising 26:10 K:BB over 20.1 frames with Triple-A St. Paul.

  • Twins' John Brebbia: Lands MiLB deal with Minnesota

Brebbia signed a minor-league contract with Minnesota on Sunday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Brebbia will report to Triple-A St. Paul, but given the unsettled state Minnesota bullpen, he may not have to wait long to get a look in the majors. Cut by the Rockies coming out of spring training, Brebbia, 35, owns a 4.04 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 378.1 career innings in the majors across stops with St. Louis, San Francisco, the White Sox, Atlanta and Detroit.

  • John Brebbia: Let go by Colorado

The Rockies released Brebbia on Monday.

Brebbia joined the Rockies in early December on an NRI deal. He entered spring training with a decent shot at making the team's Opening Day roster but struggled across seven Cactus League games, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out 11 across nine innings. The 35-year-old will look to join a team looking to add a southpaw to its bullpen.

  • Rockies' John Brebbia: Grabs NRI pact from Colorado

The Rockies signed Brebbia to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports.

Brebbia concluded the 2025 season with an ugly 7.71 ERA, though he did notch 26 strikeouts over 23.1 frames during his time with Detroit and Atlanta. The 35-year-old has a decent chance of cracking the Rockies' Opening Day roster as a middle reliever.

  • Red Sox's John Brebbia: Lands with Red Sox

Brebbia signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Brebbia entered free agency after being DFA'd by Atlanta on Monday, and he'll now give the Red Sox some organizational bullpen depth at Triple-A Worcester to close out the season. The 35-year-old righty won't be eligible to pitch in the postseason.

  • John Brebbia: Becomes free agent

Brebbia elected to become a free agent Wednesday.

The veteran reliever cleared waivers after being removed from Atlanta's 40-man roster, and he's opted for free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. Brebbia has made 22 relief appearances between Detroit and Atlanta this season, posting a 7.71 ERA.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Dropped from 40-man roster

Atlanta designated Brebbia for assignment Monday.

He'll give up his spot on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster to right-hander Alexis Diaz, whom Atlanta claimed off waivers from the Dodgers. After being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Aug. 29, Brebbia appeared in three games out of the Atlanta bullpen and surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings.

  • Braves' John Brebbia: Added to roster

Atlanta selected Brebbia's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

Brebbia posted a 1.89 ERA and 21:3 K:BB over 19 innings with Gwinnett after inking a minor-league contract with Atlanta in June. The veteran reliever holds an unsightly 7.71 ERA at the big-league level this season and will work in middle relief.

Atlanta signed Brebbia to a minor-league contract Tuesday.

Brebbia was released by the Tigers last week after collecting a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 18.2 innings. The 35-year-old finished last season with Atlanta, allowing two runs with a 9:2 K:BB over 6.2 frames. Brebbia will report to Triple-A Gwinnett for now but could get another opportunity in the majors sooner rather than later.

  • John Brebbia: Released by Tigers

Brebbia was released by the Tigers on Thursday.

The Tigers designated Brebbia for assignment Sunday and elected to release him rather than send him on an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo. He struggled to a 7.71 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 18.2 innings this season.

The veteran right-hander has given up seven runs in his past four outings, and he's now lost his place on Detroit's 26-man active roster and 40-man roster. Brebbia has a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 18.2 innings this season and will now go through the waivers process.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Activated from injured list

The Tigers activated Brebbia (triceps) from the 15-day injured list Friday.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Resumes throwing program

Brebbia (triceps) has resumed a throwing program, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Brebbia just landed on the 15-day injured list this past weekend with a right triceps strain, so it's a good sign that he's already playing catch. The reliever will be eligible for activation May 4, and it would seem he has a shot to be ready at that time.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Lands on injured list

The Tigers placed Brebbia on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right triceps strain.

Brebbia has been very effective out of the bullpen for Detroit, allowing just one earned run through nine innings. However, he'll now be held out for at least the next 15 days while he recovers from his injury. Bailey Horn will come up from Triple-A Toledo to fill the open spot on the pitching staff.

  • Tigers' John Brebbia: Earns first 2025 win

Brebbia (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief to earn the win in Sunday's 4-3 victory over the White Sox.

Brebbia worked the top of the ninth inning with the Tigers down 3-1 and ended up walking away with his first win of the season when Detroit scored three times in the bottom half of the frame. The veteran righty was 0-6 with a 5.86 ERA for the White Sox and Atlanta last year, but he's got a sparkling 0.00 ERA across five innings so far in 2025 to go along with his 1-0 record.
