Hernandez elected to become a free agent Wednesday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Hernandez cleared waivers after being removed from the Astros' 40-man roster, but he'll hit the free-agent market rather than accept an outright assignment. The right-handed reliever holds a career 7.06 ERA and 26:13 K:BB over 21.2 innings covering parts of three big-league seasons.

Hernandez was designated for assignment by the Astros on Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
Hernandez was dropped from the 40-man roster to make room for Lance McCullers on the major-league roster after McCullers was activated from the 15-day injured list Saturday. Hernandez made five appearances with Houston after being called up from Triple-A Sugar Land on Sept. 10, surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out four over four innings.

The Astros recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday.
After a month-long stay at Triple-A, Hernandez will rejoin the Houston bullpen as a replacement on the active roster for right-hander Luis Garcia (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Over five relief appearances with the Astros this season, Hernandez has submitted a 5.40 ERA, 1.95 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB in 6.2 innings.

Although he's pitched two scoreless innings since being elevated from Triple-A on Friday, Hernandez will head back to the minors in order to make room for the newly signed Enyel De Los Santos. Hernandez boasts a 1.70 ERA and 0.97 WHIP through 37 innings at Sugar Land, and if he continues at that pace, he more than likely will find himself back in Houston later this season.
