Padres' Luis Rengifo: Shifts to 60-day IL
The Padres placed Rengifo (knee) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Rengifo was diagnosed with a complete ACL tear and MCL sprain of his right knee Monday, so the move to the 60-day IL is hardly a surprise with him out for the season. The 29-year-old opened the campaign with the Brewers but was cut loose after posting a .534 OPS in 57 games, but he then signed with the Padres and found success with a .784 OPS in 38 contests prior to the injury.

Padres' Luis Rengifo: Done for '26 with ACL, MCL tear
Rengifo will miss the remainder of the season after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a complete ACL tear and MCL sprain in his right knee, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Rengifo plans to meet with a team physician before deciding on a date for his knee surgery, but the 29-year-old is likely to remain out through at least the early part of the 2027 season as a result of the operation. After struggling to a .534 OPS over 57 games with Milwaukee to begin the season before he was released in late June, Rengifo found more success upon getting a change of scenery in San Diego. Before going down with the knee injury, Rengifo had settled in as a near-everyday player while serving in a utility role for the Padres, slashing .291/.375/.409 with four home runs, three stolen bases, 19 runs and 17 RBI across 145 plate appearances. Rengifo is set to become a free agent this winter, but given his success in a limited sample, the Padres could look to re-sign him on another short-term deal.

Padres' Luis Rengifo: Lands on IL
San Diego placed Rengifo on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right knee sprain.
Rengifo was removed early from Saturday's game against the Rays after spraining his right knee in the seventh inning. The injury will require the 29-year-old to miss a minimum of 10 days. Since joining the Padres in late June, Rengifo has slashed .291/.375/.409 over 145 plate appearances with four homers, three steals, 17 RBI and 19 runs. Samad Taylor (oblique) was activated from the IL to replace Rengifo on the active roster.

Padres' Luis Rengifo: Sprains knee in Saturday's loss
Rengifo was removed from Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Rays due to a right knee sprain.
Rengifo appeared to injure his knee in the seventh inning while attempting to throw to home plate. He's flying back to San Diego, where he'll undergo further tests to determine the severity of the knee injury and establish a recovery timeline. Austin Hays and Gavin Sheets would both be in line for more playing time if Rengifo were to miss extended time.

Rengifo came to the plate against his former team with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning after San Diego had already pushed across a run, and he broke the game open with a grand slam off Kyle Harrison for his third homer of the season. The long ball snapped a 12-game drought without driving in a run. Rengifo went 1-for-3 with two walks, one stolen base and three runs scored in Friday's 7-0 win over the Giants.
Rengifo continues to thrive in a utility role for the Padres. He's now settled in as the No. 2 hitter against southpaws while seeing time at second base, third base, left field and designated hitter over the last week. He's batting .381 (16-for-42) over 13 games since joining the Padres' big-league roster July 8. Rengifo was one of six Padres with multiple hits in the runaway win, recording his first three knocks since joining San Diego. The utility man hasn't gotten many opportunities since his contract was selected July 8 -- Sunday was his first start and just his second appearance since that date. Padres' Luis Rengifo: Gets MiLB deal from Padres
The Padres signed Rengifo to a minor-league contract Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Rengifo was officially released by the Brewers earlier this week after slashing only .205/.280/.254 with no home runs across 57 contests. The utility player is hitting just .229/.285/.313 in the majors since the beginning of the 2025 season, but he offers plenty of versatility and could get another chance with the big club sooner rather than later.

Luis Rengifo: Parts ways with Brewers
The Brewers released Rengifo on Tuesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

The Brewers need to free up a roster spot for Cooper Pratt, who will be called up for his major-league debut. Rengifo is slashing only .205/.280/.254 with zero home runs this season, and he's started just one of the last four games. With Pratt on the way and David Hamilton and Joey Ortiz also on the roster, Rengifo's playing time was likely to drop further. Rengifo is a safe bet to clear waivers and become a free agent, and if that happens, the Brewers will be responsible of what remains of his $3.5 million salary.
