Red Sox's Jovani Moran: Gets call to big leagues
The Red Sox selected Moran's contract from Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
Moran is back in the big leagues for the first time since 2023, after Tommy John surgery kept him out for the entire 2024 campaign and for the first couple of months of this season. After completing a rehab assignment in the lower rungs of the minors, Moran joined Worcester in late June and provided a 3.44 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 26:3 K:BB in 18.1 innings over 12 appearances to earn a promotion to the big club. Boston will likely deploy the lefty reliever in lower-leverage spots, at least initially.

Red Sox's Jovani Moran: Slated for promotion
The Red Sox will call up Moran from Triple-A Worcester prior to Monday's game in Houston, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Moran has pitched well of late with Worcester, allowing three earned runs with an 18:0 K:BB over 11.2 innings. If Moran makes an appearance with the Red Sox, it will be his first since at the big-league level since 2023, when he was a member of the Twins. The southpaw missed the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Moran (elbow) has been activated from the 60-day injured list at Triple-A Worcester, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Moran missed all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery but has returned to make six rehab appearances in the lower minors, allowing four runs with a 17:5 K:BB over 7.2 innings. The lefty reliever has a career 29 percent strikeout rate in the majors and should get an opportunity with the Red Sox eventually, but he will need to knock off some rust at Worcester first.

Red Sox's Jovani Moran: Dealt to Boston
The Twins traded Moran (elbow) to the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Mickey Gasper, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Moran missed all of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last offseason, and there's no telling if he'll be ready for the start of spring training. The 27-year-old reliever owns a 4.15 ERA and 1.33 WHIP through 91 innings in his big-league career but will likely begin the season in the minors once he's cleared for game action.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Moves to 60-day IL
The Twins recalledMoran (forearm) from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday and transferred him to the 60-day injured list.
While pitching for St. Paul, Moran suffered a left forearm strain in late August and was placed on the affiliate's 7-day IL. Though Moran was recalled from the minors prior to being transferred to the 60-day IL, the transaction was strictly for the purpose of opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Paddack (elbow), who was reinstated from the 60-day IL. Moran will miss the rest of the season, but so long as he avoids offseason surgery on his forearm, he should be fully cleared for the start of spring training.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Out with forearm injury
Moran was placed on the 7-day IL at Triple-A St. Paul with a left forearm strain. "It doesn't sound like he'll be back any time soon. We'll see what the next few weeks hold," Saints pitching coach Pete Larson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Moran would have been a candidate to join the Twins when rosters expand in September, but it sounds like this injury could end his season.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Takes second loss
Moran (0-2) took the loss in Thursday's 8-4 defeat the hands of the Tigers. He allowed three runs on three hits with one strikeout over one inning.
The 26-year-old made his mess in the fifth inning, highlighted by Javier Baez's two-run triple that tied the game at 4-4. Moran had allowed just one run over his previous 11 appearances (10.2 innings), while Thursday's outing was the first time he'd given up more than one run since April 18. His ERA is now up to 4.50 with a 1.43 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB across 28 innings while working in middle relief for the Twins.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Blows save in extra innings
Moran (0-1) blew a save chance in the 10th inning and took the loss Tuesday against the Red Sox. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.
Moran was called on to finish the game after Minnesota's top bullpen arms (Jorge Lopez, Griffin Jax, Jhoan Duran) had been used earlier in a tie game. Moran has struggled this season by allowing six earned runs in seven innings (7.71 ERA). Although he has nine strikeouts, he also has five walks. Moran struggled with walks in the minors before improving his control last season (11% walk rate), so his slow start is a concern.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Walks an issue this spring
Moran threw a scoreless inning with two walks in Tuesday's spring training win over Tampa Bay. He's thrown four scoreless innings with four walks this spring. Moran reached 98 mph on the radar gun while pitching for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, MLB.com reports.
Moran gave up one earned run with five strikeouts and two walks in 2.2 innings in the WBC. Moran improved in his second season in the majors to become an impact reliever in the Minnesota bullpen due to his strikeout rate (32.9% in 2022). A big part of his success last season was due to improving his control (allowing just a 11% walk rate from 18.4% in 2021). His six walks in 6.2 innings between the two teams this spring is thus a concern. However, he's set to begin the season as a second lefty setup man in the Minnesota bullpen.

Twins' Jovani Moran: Back in big leagues
The Twins recalled Moran from Triple-A St. Paul on Sunday.
One day after being sent down to the minors to clear room on the 28-man active roster for starter Tyler Mahle's return to the rotation, Moran will be back with the Twins after Mahle was sent back to the IL upon suffering a recurrence of right shoulder inflammation in Saturday's 13-0 loss to the White Sox. Aaron Sanchez is likely the top candidate to replace Mahle in the rotation, while Moran presumably serves as a long man or middle-relief option for Minnesota. Moran thrived in his most recent appearance for the Twins on Wednesday, striking out five while allowing one run on three hits over three innings in a relief appearance against Boston.
