Top Maverick Handley News

  • Braves' Maverick Handley: Claimed by Atlanta

Atlanta claimed Handley off waivers from the Orioles on Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.

With both Drake Baldwin (oblique) and Sean Murphy (finger) on the injured list, Atlanta is a bit thin at catcher at the moment, so the team will bring in Handley to provide some extra depth at the position. He'll report to Triple-A and would likely join the big club only if an injury strikes another backstop. Hurston Waldrep (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: DFA'd by Baltimore

The Orioles designated Handley for assignment Tuesday.

The 28-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday and has now lost his place on Baltimore's 40-man roster. Handley has had two stints in the majors this season and struck out in his lone plate appearance.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Optioned to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Handley to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.

Handley struck out in his lone plate appearance during his brief time with the big club. He's clearing off the active roster to make room for the return of Jackson Holliday (hand).

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Called up to majors

Baltimore recalled Handley from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old was elevated to Baltimore as the corresponding move for Dylan Beavers (oblique) being placed on the 10-day IL. Handley will be the third catcher on Baltimore's 26-man roster, providing some insurance with Samuel Basallo regularly starting as the designated hitter.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Sent back to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Handley to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Handley arrived in the majors Saturday to provide insurance behind the plate after Adley Rutschman (ankle) landed on the IL, but the former will now return to the minors without playing a game for the O's. Sam Huff will now take over the backup catching jobCameron Foster was recalled from Norfolk in a corresponding move.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Summoned from minors

The Orioles selected Handley's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

The move comes as a result of Adley Rutschman landing on the 10-day IL due left ankle inflammation. Handley dealt with a left ankle injury of his own in late March and early April, but he returned to Norfolk's lineup Friday and will now head to the big-league club, presumably to back up Samuel Basallo behind the plate temporarily. To make room for Handley on the 40-man roster, Baltimore designated Chayce McDermott for assignment.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Exits Triple-A game due to ankle

Handley was removed in the bottom of the fifth inning of Triple-A Norfolk's 6-2 loss to Nashville on Sunday after being hit in the left ankle by a pitch, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Outrighted off the Orioles' 40-man roster during the offseason, Handley ended up sticking around in the organization and was expected to serve as catching depth at Norfolk in 2026. Handley will likely be sent in for further tests as the Orioles look to determine the severity of his ankle injury.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Cut from big-league camp

The Orioles reassigned Handley to minor-league camp Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Handley logged 47 plate appearances in the majors in 2025 while the Orioles contended with multiple injuries at catcher, but the 28-year-old was never viewed as anything more than a stopgap option and was dropped from the 40-man roster over the winter. He'll remain part of the Orioles organization for the 2026 campaign, but he's likely to spend the entire season at Triple-A Norfolk unless Baltimore is down two of Adley Rutschman, Samuel Basallo and Sam Huff at any point.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Orioles outrighted Handley to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Handley was removed from the 40-man roster last week, but he has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization as catching depth. The 27-year-old went just 3-for-41 at the dish during his time in the majors in 2025.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Designated for assignment

The Orioles designated Handley for assignment Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Handley will lose his place on the 40-man roster in order to make room for Pete Alonso, whose signing became official Thursday. Handley went 3-for-41 (.073) in the majors this past season but slashed a more respectable .258/.373/.367 over 154 plate appearances at Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Optioned back down

The Orioles optioned Handley to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Handley was recalled from Norfolk on Monday, but he did not see the field. The catcher getting optioned corresponds with Tyler Wells (elbow) and Jorge Mateo (hamstring) both being reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Moves up from Triple-A

The Orioles recalled Handley from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.

Handley will provide the Orioles with a third catching option in September, joining Samuel Basallo and Alex Jackson. The 27-year-old has previously logged 41 plate appearances with the Orioles earlier this season, slashing .073/.133/.073 with three RBI and two runs in 16 games.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Activated and optioned

The Orioles activated Handley (wrist) from the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

The 27-year-old will stick around with Norfolk after he recently wrapped up a five-game rehab assignment with the affiliate. Initially placed on the 7-day injured list June 23 due to a concussion, Handley was later shifted to the 10-day IL on July 23 due to a sprained right wrist. Though Handley is healthy again, the Orioles didn't have a spot available for him on the active roster with three other catchers already on hand (Adley Rutschman, Samuel Basallo and Alex Jackson).

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Going on rehab assignment

Handley (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Handley hasn't seen game action since June 22 due to a concussion and, more recently, a sprained right wrist. However, he's getting close to making a return, as he's set to see some game action this weekend. It's unclear how long of an assignment he'll require.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Kicks off hitting progression

The Orioles announced Monday that Handley (wrist) has resumed swinging a bat, MLB.com reports.

Initially placed on the 7-day injured list June 23, Handley cleared concussion protocol a month later but was shifted to the 10-day IL last week while he continues to recover from a right wrist sprain. The backstop appears to have begun a hitting progression, but he'll still need to face live pitching in addition to proving that his throwing isn't impacted by the wrist injury before he gets cleared for a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Goes on 10-day IL with wrist sprain

The Orioles transferred Handley (concussion) from the 7-day injured list to the 10-day IL due to a right wrist sprain.

Handley suffered a concussion as a result of a collision with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm back on June 22, but he also hurt his wrist on the play. He appears to have since cleared concussion protocol, but a recent visit with a wrist specialist confirmed a sprain. The Orioles haven't indicated how long Handley might be shelved.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Seeing wrist specialist

Handley is nearing the completion of the concussion protocol, but he's nursing a wrist injury and will visit with a specialist in the coming days, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Handley has been on the 7-day injured list since late June and evidently must have also hurt his wrist during a collision with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm back on June 22. The Orioles haven't provided a timetable for his return from the IL.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: At least a week away from swinging

Handley (concussion) isn't expected to be cleared to swing a bat for at least another week, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reported Friday.

Handley has been on the concussion injured list since June 23 after being on the receiving end of a nasty collision with Jazz Chisholm. He'll need at least one more week before being cleared to swing a bat, so he shouldn't be expected back until late July at the earliest.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Not ready for baseball activities

Orioles manager Tony Mansolino said Sunday that Handley (concussion) hasn't been cleared to resume baseball activities, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Handley is one of four Orioles catchers on the 40-man roster who resides on the injured list. Like Handley, Chadwick Tromp (back) and Gary Sanchez (knee) are also shut down from activities, while Adley Rutschman (oblique) has resumed running and taking swings off a tee but still appears to be weeks away from a return. The Orioles appear set to get by with Jacob Stallings and Alex Jackson as their catching tandem through the All-Star break, and likely to begin the second half.

  • Orioles' Maverick Handley: Lands on concussion injured list

The Orioles placed Handley on the 7-day injured list Monday due to a concussion.

Handley was injured during a violent collision with the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm during Sunday's 4-2 loss. While Handley will be eligible to return in a week, the Orioles aren't providing a timetable for the 27-year-old's activation, given the unpredictability of concussions. Adley Rutschman (oblique) also remains on the IL, so the Orioles will go with Gary Sanchez and Chadwick Tromp as their options at catcher.
