  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Expected back Sunday

Manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Wells (head) will likely return from the injured list and start Sunday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. Wells landed on the injured list June 6 with cervical headaches but has been playing in rehab games since Tuesday, going 2-for-12 with a pair of homers and an additional RBI across three contests. He'll presumably reclaim his job as New York's primary backstop once he's activated, though he may not take on an everyday role after posting a .533 OPS through 169 plate appearances to begin the season.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Homers twice in rehab game

Wells (head) went 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBI in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. This was Wells' second rehab game after he landed on the 10-day IL due to cervical headaches June 6. Given his performance Thursday, the backstop appears to be feeling much better. Per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that the team hasn't yet made a decision on when Wells will return to the big-league club, but that could happen at some point this weekend.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Beginning rehab assignment

Wells (head) has been sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to begin a rehab assignment. Wells is ready to participate in games again after going on the 10-day injured list earlier this month with cervical headaches. He's eligible for activation now and hasn't missed much time, so Wells' rehab assignment should be brief.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Set for rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Wells (head) will go out on a rehab assignment before being activated from the 10-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Wells, who is recovering from cervical heaches, will be eligible to return from the IL ahead of the Yankees' next game Tuesday versus the White Sox, but the 26-year-old will get some time to shake off rust in the minors before he rejoins the big club. The skipper didn't go into any specifics regarding how long the rehab assignment might last, but if Wells is able to catch a full nine-inning game with a minor-league affiliate early in the week without incident, he might be activated prior to this weekend's home series versus the Reds.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: No decision on rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that the team will wait until after the weekend series against the Blue Jays before deciding whether Wells (head) will be activated off the 10-day injured list or embark on a rehab assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Wells landed on the 10-day IL this past Saturday due to cervical headaches and was cleared for baseball activities Wednesday. How he progresses in his recovery will determine whether he'll be activated from the IL ahead of Tuesday's home series opener against the White Sox. J.C. Escarra and Ali Sanchez will both continue to see increased reps behind home plate for as long as Wells is sidelined.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Cleared for baseball activities

Wells (head) will resume baseball activities at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. Wells did not accompany the Yankees on their road trip, but he's been cleared for activities after concussion tests and an MRI came back negative. The catcher was placed on the 10-day injured list this past weekend due to cervical headaches, but he looks to be tracking toward a return when first eligible June 16.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: MRI returns negative

Wells' (headaches) MRI on Tuesday came back negative, per MLB.com. Wells was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to cervical headaches. He'd already received a negative concussion test, and now an MRI has also returned clean. Wells isn't traveling with the team on its current road trip, and it remains to be seen if he'll need more than a minimum IL stay.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Placed on IL

The Yankees placed Wells on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to cervical headaches. Wells has gone just 1-for-14 at the plate over his last five games, and his headaches will now force him to remain out until at least mid-June. J.C. Escarra was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move and will likely split reps behind the dish with Ali Sanchez.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Logs first three-hit game of season

Wells went 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI in a 15-1 rout of the Royals on Tuesday. All nine of New York's starters finished with multiple hits, so Wells' performance (which included three singles) got a bit lost in the shuffle. Still, it was a notable effort since it was the first time Wells collected multiple hits in a game since April 28, and it was also his first three-hit performance this season. The backstop has struggled at the plate throughout the campaign, slashing just .181/.295/.283 with four homers, 13 runs and seven RBI, but he has remained New York's primary catcher.

  • Yankees' Austin Wells: Slugs long ball Saturday

Wells went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two walks against Houston in Saturday's 8-3 victory. Wells swatted a solo homer in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and added a run-scoring single in the ninth. This was arguably the catcher's best offensive game this season -- it was the first time he's reached base four times through 22 contests, and the long ball was his first since Opening Day. It's been a rough start to the campaign for Wells, as he's carrying a .635 OPS with two homers and four RBI across 80 plate appearances. However, Wells has propped up his contributions by posting a 15:14 BB:K, leading him to an acceptable .338 OBP.

Wells went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and two total RBI in a loss to the Astros on Wednesday. Wells notched three of New York's seven extra-base hits in the defeat, and among his knocks was a two-run homer to left field in the fourth inning. The backstop has suddenly caught fire with the bat, slashing .421/.450/1.053 with three home runs and five RBI over his past six games. Prior to that stretch, he batted a miserable .133 with a 28.4 percent strikeout rate over his previous 24 contests.
