Alonso wound up having to settle for a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets last offseason, but he had the ability to opt out after the first year of that deal and has unsurprisingly done just that. The first baseman slashed .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI for the Mets in 2025. Alonso is not eligible to receive a qualifying offer this offseason, which should help his market.
Alonso said after Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Marlins that he plans to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract and become a free agent this offseason, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets in February, which included an opt out after the 2025 season. For the second season in a row, Alonso played in all 162 games for the Mets, batting .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBI, 87 runs scored and one stolen base. The slugger will now enter free agency with plenty of interested suitors for his talents, though a return to the Mets could remain a possibility.

The All-Star first baseman will likely fall short of what could be his fourth career 40-homer year, barring a multi-homer effort in Sunday's regular-season finale in Miami, but he's once again been a prolific four-category fantasy stud in 2025. Alonso was 0-for-3 with a walk before delivering a walk-off, three-run shot in the 10th inning. It was his 34th long ball of the year and snapped a 10-game homerless drought. He posted a .604 OPS despite three multi-hit performances during that 10-game span. Alonso is now slashing .266/.342/.510 with 72 extra-base hits and 117 RBI through 657 plate appearances.
Alonso went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Tuesday's 12-5 win over the Tigers.
The first baseman racked up 823 feet worth of long balls by taking Sawyer Gipson-Long deep in the first inning and Chris Paddack in the seventh. Alonso is up to 33 homers on the season through 139 games, including five in his last 11 contests, and with 23 games left on the Mets' schedule, he's got a shot at reaching 40 for the fourth time in his career.
