Royals' Cole Ragans: Out with elbow impingement
The Royals placed Ragans on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to May 7, due to a left elbow impingement.
The left-hander departed his start against the Guardians on Wednesday due to a valgus extension overload in his left elbow -- also known as pitcher's elbow -- and he was initially expected to rest for a few days before the next steps of his recovery program were determined. Ragans said Thursday that he was already feeling much better than when he left Wednesday's contest, but he'll still spend at least the next couple of weeks on the IL after being diagnosed with the impingement. Stephen Kolek was called up from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move Friday and is a candidate to fill Ragans' spot in the starting rotation.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Dealing with pitcher's elbow
Ragans was diagnosed with valgus extension overload in his left elbow Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Ragans' elbow forced him to make an early exit from his start Wednesday after three innings. The Royals are going to allow the 28-year-old lefty to rest for a few days and see how he feels before determining next steps. Ragans said Thursday that he has already begun to feel better since leaving Wednesday's game, per Rogers, which bodes well for his chances of avoiding a trip to the IL.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Exits with sore triceps
Ragans was removed from Wednesday's game against the Guardians due to left triceps/elbow soreness.
Ragans made it through three shutout innings before being forced out of his start, during which he gave up one hit and two walks while striking out four batters. It remains unclear whether he'll be ready for his next turn through the rotation next week against the White Sox, though the Royals will likely send him in for further testing and offer an update once they have more information.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Yields three homers in no-decision
Ragans allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Friday.
All of the runs against Ragans came via the long ball. Julio Rodriguez had a two-run home run in the first inning, and Connor Joe and Randy Arozarena added solo shots in the fifth and sixth. Ragans has alternated good and bad starts all year, and this was the third time he's surrendered three homers. Overall, he has a 5.29 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 41:21 K:BB across 32.1 innings over seven starts. He's tentatively lined up to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Fans 11 Saturday
Ragans (1-4) earned the win Saturday against the Angels, striking out 11 and allowing one run on five hits and no walks over six innings
Ragans earned his first win of the season Saturday while posting his third quality start of the campaign, and he achieved this by punching out a season-high 11 batters. Ragans has a 5.00 ERA in 27 innings this year, although that ERA is inflated by his previous start, during which he allowed seven runs across 4.1 innings against the Yankees. Ragans will try to keep it rolling in his next start, which should be scheduled for next weekend on the road against the Mariners.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Can't find plate in fourth loss
Ragans (0-4) took the loss Sunday against the Yankees, allowing seven runs on four hits and eight walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out six.
Ragans' control and command was all over the place -- just 49 of his 97 pitches hit for strikes. The eight walks were a career worst as well, and he even served up a career-high-tying three home runs. It's worth mentioning Sunday's game was delayed by about three hours due to rain, which might have disrupted the left-hander's warm-up routine. Ragans owns a disappointing 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 22:18 K:BB over 21 frames, and he'll be hoping to flush Sunday's outing his next time out against the Angels.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Settles for no-decision Tuesday
Ragans didn't factor into the decision in the Royals' 2-1 loss to the Tigers on Tuesday. He allowed one hit and four walks while striking out one batter over six scoreless innings.
The southpaw exited the mound after 93 pitches (56 strikes) with Kansas City clinging to a 1-0 lead, but Nick Mears coughed it up in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ragans is still looking for his first win of 2026, but he'll take a 3.78 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 16:10 K:BB through 16.2 innings into his next start, which is set to come on the road this weekend against the Yankees.

Royals' Cole Ragans: Confirmed for next start
The Royals list Ragans (thumb) as their probable starting pitcher for Tuesday's game in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Ragans was forced out of his previous start Wednesday in Cleveland in the first inning shortly after taking a 92.4-mile-per-hour comebacker off his pitching hand and was later diagnosed with a left thumb contusion. The southpaw downplayed the issue afterward, and after he seemingly made it through his between-starts bullpen session without incident, he'll take the hill on five days' rest as Kansas City opens its three-game set in Detroit.

Ragans' thumb was struck by a comebacker in the first inning. He initially remained in the game but was unable to continue after the thumb stiffened up on him and affected his command.
