Athletics' Scott McGough: Up from Vegas
The Athletics recalled McGough from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday.
With Sean Newcomb (elbow) headed for the injured list, the A's will turn to McGough to provide the big club with depth in their bullpen. The 35-year-old has surrendered 10 earned runs in just 12 MLB innings this season but owns a 3.18 ERA through 39.2 frames in the minors. He'll likely be limited to low-leverage work.

He's allowed 32 earned runs and owns a 30:27 K:BB across his last 39.2 frames in the big leagues between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The Diamondbacks designated McGough for assignment Thursday.
He will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to left-hander Andrew Saalfrank, who was reinstated after serving a one-year suspension. The Diamondbacks selected McGough's contract from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.

He's appeared in eight games at Triple-A, posting a 4.82 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB across 9.1 innings. The move corresponds with Yilber Diaz being optioned to Reno and J.P. Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Banished to MiLB camp
The Diamondbacks reassigned McGough to minor-league camp Wednesday.
Arizona declined McGough's $4 million team option for 2025 in November before bringing him back on a minor-league deal in February and allowing him to compete for an Opening Day roster spot. After turning in a 7.44 ERA over 26 appearances with the big club in 2024, McGough didn't do much this spring to demonstrate that his performance turned a corner, as he was lit up for six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. The 35-year-old righty will likely open the season in the bullpen at Triple-A Reno.

Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Back with Snakes
McGough signed a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training.
The Diamondbacks declined their half of McGough's $4 million mutual option earlier in the offseason, but they will ultimately retain the righty's services on a minor-league deal. The 35-year-old reliever struggled mightily in the big leagues last season, posting a 7.44 ERA and 1.68 WHIP across 32.2 innings. Barring a drastic turnaround in spring training, he'll likely fill in as bullpen depth for Triple-A Reno.

He receives a $750K buyout in the transaction. McGough logged a 5.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 111 strikeouts over 103 innings in two seasons with Arizona. He was much more effective in 2023 than in 2024, as his K-BB% dropped from 18.6 percent to 2.7 percent and he moved back and forth between Triple-A and the majors this past season after spending all of 2023 in the big leagues.

McGough has struggled to a 6.62 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB over 17.2 innings thus far. It's unclear if the team has plans to keep him around for the time being or send him back to Triple-A Reno.

Diamondbacks' Scott McGough: Set to open Sunday's game
McGough will serve as the Diamondbacks' opening pitcher for Sunday's game against the Padres, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.
McGough was called up from Triple-A Reno on Saturday and threw a scoreless inning (11 pitches) in the Diamondback's 13-1 loss. Saturday's usage should not alter plans to have him open Sunday. Though McGough will make his second career start, he can be considered an opener after exclusively working out of the bullpen in both the majors and minors in 2024 and having yet to throw more than two innings in any of his 26 appearances. Manager Torey Lovullo didn't reveal if the Diamondbacks would lean on a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind McGough, though the skipper suggested that Arizona would call up another arm from Triple-A to help cover some innings. Among the available pitchers currently in the Arizona bullpen, Bryce Jarvis (three days' rest) and Justin Martinez (four days' rest) are the freshest arms who could be part of the pitching plan Sunday. Over his 16 outings with the big club this season, McGough has logged a 6.35 ERA and 1.65 WHIP across 17 innings.
