The Royals signed Hernandez to a minor-league contract Thursday.
Hernandez's deal includes an invitation to summer camp, where he'll provide the Royals with some additional depth behind the plate while top backstop Salvador Perez (illness) recovers from the coronavirus. The 26-year-old Hernandez previously appeared in 22 games at the big-league level with Arizona between 2015 and 2016, but he's played at only the Double-A and Triple-A level over the past three seasons.
Hernandez was released by the Cardinals on Monday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal in January as a non-roster invitee, but he failed to record a hit over seven plate appearances in spring training before play was suspended. The 26-year-old has struggled in recent seasons and hit just .192/.258/.355 with six home runs and 44 strikeouts over 54 games played at Double-A and Triple-A in 2019.

Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
The catcher will receive an invitation to big-league camp as part of the deal. Hernandez is unlikely to be anything other than organizational depth this season, as he's appeared in just 22 major-league games, none of which have come in the last three seasons. He hit .209/.274/.399 in 47 games for Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox's system in 2019.
