Top Marcus Stroman News

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Grabs third win

Stroman (3-2) earned the win Thursday over the Rays, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out three.

Stroman held Tampa Bay scoreless through three innings before stumbling in the fourth, when he gave up four runs on five hits. However, the Yankees provided more than enough run support in an eventual 7-4 victory. It's been an up-and-down year overall for Stroman, who's given up eight runs over 8.2 innings in his last two outings, though he figures to remain in New York's rotation, as the Yankees did not add another starter prior to the trade deadline. The 34-year-old Stroman sports a 6.23 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP and 26:16 K:BB across nine starts (39 innings) this season.

  • Marcus Stroman: Cut loose by Yankees

The Yankees released Stroman on Friday.

The right-hander made his ninth start of the season Thursday against the Rays and picked up the win after giving up four runs across five innings, and it will end up being his final start with the Yankees. Stroman has a 6.23 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 26:16 K:BB across 39 innings this season and will look to latch on with another team for the stretch run.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Struggles to find plate in loss

Stroman (2-2) took the loss Saturday as the Yankees fell 9-4 to the Phillies, coughing up four runs on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander got tagged for runs in three of his four frames while tossing only 50 of 89 pitches for strikes as he issued a season-worst four free passes. It's the first time Stroman has failed to last at least five innings since he came off the IL in late June, and in those five starts he's posted a 4.01 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB over 24.2 innings. He'll try to get back on track in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Rays.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Sharp in second win

Stroman (2-1) earned the win Sunday over Atlanta, allowing one run on five hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out four.

Stroman delivered his first quality start of the season Sunday -- he'd blank Atlanta for five innings before eventually giving up a lone run on a Matt Olson homer in the sixth. The 34-year-old Stroman's pitched well since rejoining the Yankees in late June, posting a 3.00 ERA over four starts (15 innings) after struggling to an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts (9.1 innings) in April. Stroman is currently scheduled to face the Phillies at home his next time out.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Decent results in no-decision

Stroman took a no-decision Thursday against the Mariners, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three.

Just one of the hits off Stroman went for extra bases, and he was able to build up to 90 pitches in his third start since being reinstated from the injured list. Additionally, the veteran right-hander has tossed at least five frames in all three of these outings after being unable to complete five innings in any of his first three appearances before landing on the IL in mid-April. Stroman still has work to do in order to enhance his 6.66 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 15:12 K:BB over 24.1 innings, but New York will need him in its post-All-Star break rotation now that Clarke Schmidt (elbow) is done for the rest of the current season, and likely all of 2026.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Season-high four Ks in no-decision

Stroman didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Mets, giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out four.

Although Stroman allowed a season-high seven hits, he was able to stretch out to 81 pitches in his second start off the injured list. Additionally, the veteran right-hander set a season high in strikeouts while producing nine whiffs. The Yankees will likely need him to stay in their rotation going forward due to Clarke Schmidt (forearm) going on the injured list Friday. Stroman will look to improve upon a 7.45 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB over 19.1 frames his next time out at home versus the Mariners, who are averaging 5.2 runs per game over their last 21 contests.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Grabs win in return

Stroman (1-1) earned the win Sunday against the A's, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out one.

Stroman was sharp in his return from a two-and-a-half-month stint on the IL. The right-hander blanked the A's through four innings before ultimately allowing a lone run on a Willie MacIver solo homer in the fifth. It's certainly an encouraging sign for Stroman and the Yankees, after he struggled to an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts (9.1 innings) this year. Stroman is currently lined up to face the Mets on the road in his next outing.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Reinstated ahead of start

The Yankees activated Stroman (knee) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Sunday against the Athletics at Yankee Stadium.

For the first time since April 11, Stroman will be taking the hill for the Yankees after an inflamed left knee kept him on the shelf for more than two and a half months. According to Ronald Blum of the Associated Press, Stroman said that his knee pain stemmed from a torn ACL suffered a decade earlier, and the right-hander could continue to require treatment in between starts to handle the rigors of the long season. After the extended downtime, Stroman didn't look especially sharp during his three-start rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset, as he turned in a 6.97 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB over 10.1 innings. Stroman built up to 65 pitches in his final start with Somerset and could be operating with a light workload restriction in his return to the Yankees rotation Sunday.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Coming off IL on Sunday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Stroman (knee) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's series finale versus the Athletics at Yankee Stadium, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Stroman has been on the shelf since April 12 due to left knee inflammation, and while he has struggled during his rehab assignment, the Yankees will have a spot available for him in the rotation after Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) was placed on the 15-day IL last week. Over his three minor-league rehab outings, Stroman was roughed up to the tune of a 6.97 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB over 10.1 innings. He maxed out at 3.2 innings and 65 pitches over those three starts, so Stroman will likely be under a light workload restriction Sunday. Given his struggles during his rehab assignment and his underwhelming numbers with the Yankees overall since signing with the team in free agency in January 2024, Stroman won't make for a reliable streaming option against the Athletics.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Whiffs four in second rehab start

Stroman (knee) struck out four and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk across 3.1 innings in his second rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset.

Stroman built up to 55 pitches in Wednesday's outing and may need just one more start in the minors before making his return from the 15-day injured list. His next rehab outing is scheduled to take place Tuesday, and he's slated to throw approximately 70 pitches in that appearance, per MLB.com. Despite logging an 11.57 ERA and 2.04 WHIP over 9.1 innings in his three starts with the Yankees before landing on the shelf April 12 due to left knee inflammation, Stroman could have a spot in the big-league rotation waiting for him once he's activated. Ryan Yarbrough had been performing well as the Yankees' No. 5 starter in recent weeks, but he was placed on the IL on Sunday due to an oblique strain and is unlikely to be activated before Stroman.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Effective in first rehab start

Stroman (knee) covered 3.1 innings and struck out four batters while allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks in his first rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset.

Considering Stroman hadn't pitched in a game since April 11 after being shut down due to left knee inflammation, his performance in Wednesday's outing with Somerset was about as good as the Yankees could have expected following a lengthy layoff. The right-hander faced 13 batters in the start and pumped in 27 of his 46 pitches for strikes. The Yankees are letting Stroman build back up as a starter, but he'll likely need to continue to find success over his subsequent rehab outings in order to unseat Ryan Yarbrough in the rotation once he's activated from the 15-day injured list. Since stepping in as the Yankees' No. 5 starter May 3, Yarbrough owns a respectable 4.20 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 30 innings over his six starts.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Kicking off rehab assignment

Stroman (knee) is scheduled to make his first rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset.

Stroman will be pitching in a game for the first time since April 11 after a lingering left knee issue has kept him on the shelf for nearly two months. Given the length of his absence, Stroman will need multiple rehab outings in the minors to build up his pitch count as the Yankees determine whether he's deserving of a spot in the rotation once he's activated from the injured list. Though he broke camp as a member of the rotation, Stroman struggled in his three starts prior to landing on the injured list (11.57 ERA, 2.04 WHIP in 9.1 innings), and Ryan Yarbrough has mostly been effective since stepping in as New York's No. 5 starter in mid-May.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Nearing rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Stroman (knee) threw another live batting practice session Thursday and could begin a rehab assignment soon, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Boone also noted that Stroman is being built up as a starting pitcher rather than being shifted to relief. That suggests Stroman's rehab assignment could be a lengthy one, given that he hasn't pitched in a game since mid-April. There's no guarantee Stroman will join the Yankees' rotation once activated, but the club wants to keep its options open.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Throws to hitters Saturday

Stroman (knee) tossed live batting practice in Los Angeles on Saturday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

Stroman threw around 30 pitches and two innings, marking the first time he faced live hitters since May 9. The right-hander "looked sharp" according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who also indicated that he's unsure about the next step in Stroman's rehab program. Stroman's last game action came April 11, so he'll almost certainly need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated off the 15-day injured list. The veteran hurler had been part of New York's rotation prior to getting hurt, but it's not certain that he'll return to that role upon activation.

  • Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Slated for bullpen session

Stroman (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Stroman has struggled to overcome soreness in his left knee, but tests have shown no structural damage, and he threw a side session Saturday without issue. Should the right-hander get through Tuesday's bullpen session without a setback, he could be in line for a return from the 15-day injured list in the first half of June. It's unclear if Stroman will immediately return to the rotation, however, as both Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough have been pitching well, while JT Brubaker (ribs) recently began a rehab assignment and Luis Gil (lat) is approaching a return to the mound as well.
