Red Sox's Trevor Story: Will not opt out of contract

Story will remain with the Red Sox after choosing not to opt out of the two years and $50 million left on his contract, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Story is owed $25 million each of the next two seasons and the Red Sox have a $25 million club option or $5 million buyout on him for 2028. He might have been able to get more than that on the open market, but Story -- who will turn 33 later this month -- has opted to stay put. Story slashed .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs and 31 stolen bases over 157 regular-season games for Boston in 2025.
Story isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
The Red Sox will give Story a breather Saturday after the team clinched a postseason berth with Friday's win. David Hamilton will pick up a start at shortstop as a result and bat leadoff.
Story went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and an additional run scored in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics.
Story continued to show a productive September bat, logging a fourth consecutive multi-hit effort and upping his OPS to 1.023 for the month. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, the normally sure-handed defender committed two errors that contributed to two unearned runs. The home run gave him 25 for the season to go along with 93 RBI and 31 steals.

It's the first time since he left Colorado after the 2021 campaign that Story has reached the 20-homer plateau, and the blast gave him his fourth 20-20 season. His next long ball will be the 200th of his career.
