  • D'Andre Swift RB | CHI

Lions' D'Andre Swift: Limited with hip injury

Swift was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice due to a hip injury.

Swift has been hampered by an undisclosed injury since mid-August, but the Lions' first practice report of 2020 revealed the nature of the rookie's issue. While Swift's status for Sunday's season opener against the Bears tentatively looks up in the air, he'll have two more chances to increase his participation in practice and erase any concern about his availability. With veteran Adrian Peterson having joined Detroit's backfield over the weekend, Swift could find himself in a backfield committee if he gains clearance for Week 1.

  • Dolphins' Patrick Laird: Healthy ahead of Week 1

Laird is not on Wednesday's injury report, Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post reports.

Laird is healthy heading into Miami's season opener. Just how involved he'll be is a different story, as he's currently buried behind Jordan Howard, Matt Breida and Myles Gaskin on the running back depth chart.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Getting in work Wednesday

Montgomery (groin) took part in stretching and individual drills at Wednesday's practice, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Montgomery is two weeks removed from the groin strain that was expected to require 2-to-4 weeks of recovery time. Considering what he was able to do Wednesday, he seems poised to receive a "limited" tag on the Bears' first Week 1 injury report, which will be revealed in the near future. If he's unable to make it all the way back for Sunday's game at Detroit, though, Montgomery will yield the backfield to some combination of pass-catching back Tarik Cohen, Ryan Nall and undrafted rookie Artavis Pierce.

  • Devine Ozigbo RB | DET

Jaguars' Devine Ozigbo: Hamstring injury surfaces

Ozigbo didn't practice Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.

Ozigbo has a clear path to backfield work after Leonard Fournette was recently cut, but any opportunities the Nebraska product receives will be contingent on his health. The 23-year-old will have two more chances to resume practicing before Sunday's game against Indianapolis. If Ozigbo is unable to suit up for the season opener, the Jaguars will proceed with a combination of undrafted rookie James Robinson and Chris Thompson.

  • Dalvin Cook RB | DAL

Vikings' Dalvin Cook: Ready for full workload

Cook said he isn't too worried about his contract situation and is prepared to play Sunday in the Vikings' season opener against the Packers, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports. "If [coach Mike Zimmer] calls my name, I'll be out there," Cook said Wednesday.

Cook obviously isn't thrilled that he still doesn't have a long-term deal, but he doesn't seem reluctant to take on his usual workload Week 1. While reports suggest the running back's agent and the Vikings broke off discussions in mid-August, there's still some hope to work things out before next offseason. Cook had a career-high 154 rushing yards in his lone matchup with the Packers last year, breaking free for a 75-yard touchdown in the Week 2 loss.

  • Jets' La'Mical Perine: No practice Wednesday

Perine (ankle) won't participate in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Perine is working his way back from the low-ankle sprain he sustained late August. Though the rookie fourth-round pick isn't expected to miss a significant amount of time, he now only has two more chances to increase his practice participation ahead of a Week 1 divisional tilt in Buffalo. When available, Perine is expected to begin his career as the Jets' No. 3 running back behind Le'Veon Bell and Frank Gore.

  • J.K. Dobbins RB | DEN

Ravens' J.K. Dobbins: Should have Week 1 role

Dobbins should be active for Sunday's game against Cleveland, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.

The Ravens' PR staff put Dobbins fourth on the unofficial depth chart that was released Monday, which led to a bit of concern that the rookie might be lightly used -- or even inactive -- in the season opener. Zrebiec said he would be "shocked" if Dobbins is a healthy scratch, adding that the depth chart posted on the team website means nothing with regard to coach John Harbaugh's plans for Week 1. The longtime Ravens beat writer also mentions that Dobbins has seen a lot of practice reps on special teams, suggesting Baltimore is planning on the rookie being a key contributor on that unit. Mark Ingram is still expected to be the starter, but Dobbins should remain in the mix for some touches out of the backfield.

  • Jeremy McNichols: Joins Titans' practice squad

The Titans signed McNichols to the practice squad Monday, Jim Wyatt of the team's official site reports.

McNichols didn't make Tennessee's initial regular-season roster, but he'll stick around as an emergency option on the practice squad. To begin the 2020 season, the Titans' only backups to Derrick Henry are Darrynton Evans (undisclosed) and Senorise Perry.

  • Miles Sanders RB | DAL

Eagles' Miles Sanders: Taking part in individual work

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson labeled Sanders (lower body) as day-to-day and said the running back would take part in individual work during Wednesday's practice, Mike Kaye of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The Eagles' first official practice report will be released later Wednesday and will reveal how extensively Sanders was involved in the session, but based on Pederson's comments, expect the 23-year-old to be listed as a limited participant. Though the lower-body injury cost Sanders significant practice time during training camp, the Eagles remain optimistic that he'll be ready to headline the team's backfield in Sunday's season opener against Washington. If Sanders' recovery doesn't progress as expected and he ends up sitting out the Week 1 matchup or taking on a more limited workload than normal, Boston Scott and Corey Clement would be in store for heightened roles.

  • JaMycal Hasty: Joins 49ers' practice squad

The 49ers retained Hasty on their initial practice squad, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Hasty impressed the 49ers during training camp with his quickness and soft hands, but a crowded veteran backfield led to the undrafted rookie to be cut and eventually moved to the practice squad. San Francisco's current backs aren't the models of good health, so Hasty could find himself called upon (or poached by another club) at some point this season.
