  • Matt Breida RB | SF

Bills' Matt Breida: Strong effort in camp early on

Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo relays that Breida "has really shown off his speed and quickness" through the early stages of training camp.

With that in mind, Capaccio suggests that Breida "could wind up being more of a factor in the (Buffalo) offense than many anticipated" when the running back joined the team back in March. That said, as long as both Devin Singletary and Zack Moss are healthy and in the mix, Breida doesn't have a clear path to steady volume. The 26-year-old could, however, make his mark in a complementary role, given the fleet wheels he adds to the Bills' backfield mix.

  • Football Team's Antonio Gibson: Feeling healthy again

Gibson says he no longer feels lingering effects from last year's turf toe injury, Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic reports.

Two months ago, Gibson revealed that his toe still had some discomfort that required treatment, though nothing that was impacting his participation in practice. Even if his risk of re-injury remains somewhat heightened, this doesn't sound like a threat to Gibson's availability or workload at the beginning of the year. He's locked in as Washington's starting running back and lead runner, with potential to take more receiving work away from J.D. McKissic this year. Washington coach Ron Rivera agrees that Gibson has rebounded from the toe injury and so far looked sharp in training camp.

  • Titans' Jeremy McNichols: Removed from PUP

McNichols (undisclosed) is no longer on the PUP list, Jim Wyatt of the Titans' official site reports.

McNichols is eligible to return to practice a few days into training camp, giving him plenty of time to make his case for a depth role behind Derrick Henry. However, the Titans hope 2020 third-round pick Darrynton Evan can lock down the backup job and passing-down work, with journeyman McNichols being more of a Plan B.

  • James Conner RB | ARI

Cardinals' James Conner: Held out of practice

Conner (toe) didn't participate in 11-on-11s or 7-on-7s over the weekend, Jess Root of Yahoo Sports reports.

Conner had toe surgery at some point this offseason but reportedly participated in June OTAs. It's unclear if he's dealing with a new injury or simply being eased into practice at training camp. Either way, the Cardinals hope Conner and Chase Edmonds can form an effective tandem in the backfield this year. The depth options are lacking, to say the least, with Jonathan Ward, Eno Benjamin, Khalfani Muhammad and Tavien Feaster offering minimal NFL experience.

  • Saquon Barkley RB | PHI

Giants' Saquon Barkley: Making progress in rehab

Coach Joe Judge said Barkley (knee) has shown "tangible progress" while doing rehab work that mirrors what the Giants do in practice, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The running back seems to be running, jumping and cutting at full speed, but he hasn't been cleared to practice, leaving Devontae Booker as the Giants' top back early in training camp. Barkley eventually should get in on the fun at camp, though an appearance in a preseason game this August seems unlikely. He's thus far been unwilling to comment on a rehab timeline or make any comments about a potential return date, leading to speculation that he could miss Week 1. However, a return to practice within the next couple weeks likely would put Barkley on track for the season opener.

  • Bills' Devin Singletary: In great shape

Singletary appears to be in excellent shape during the first few days of training camp after working on strength and speed throughout the offseason, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports. Said coach Sean McDermott, "I'm seeing a young man now that has taken the offseason and attacked it head on. He's in a great spot physically, it looks like at this point. I'm anxious to see him out here but what I saw towards the tail end of the spring, I was impressed with the areas that he was trying to be intentional about working on his weaknesses. And I think that says a lot about the young man."

The third-year back has had his ups and downs during his first two seasons, and if there's one knock on Singletary it's that he's lacked an extra burst once breaking through the line of scrimmage. It appears he's committed to changing that, though it's also worth noting that Zack Moss, Singletary's competition for carries, seems to be quickly moving past his offseason ankle surgery. We'll add a final reminder that quarterback Josh Allen has a nose for scoring rushing touchdowns, with 25 of them in his three NFL seasons compared to Singletary's four in his two years. Singletary can be considered the No. 1 right now, and it seems like he's well ahead of Moss in terms of game shape, but there's plenty more to come that will shape what the backfield distribution looks like come Week 1.

  • Nick Chubb RB | HOU

Browns' Nick Chubb: Inks three-year extension

Chubb and the Browns agreed to a three-year, $36.6 million extension Saturday that includes $20 million guaranteed, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

The 2018 second-round pick was entering the final year of his rookie deal, but he's now under contract with Cleveland through the 2024 campaign. Chubb played in 12 games last year and ran for 1,067 yards and 12 touchdowns on 5.6 yards per carry after breaking out with 1,494 rushing yards in 2019. He's projected to remain one of the top running backs in the league for the foreseeable future despite Kareem Hunt also being in the backfield mix.

  • Qadree Ollison RB | PIT

Falcons' Qadree Ollison: Second on depth chart

Ollison is working as Atlanta's No. 2 running back in practice, Tori McElhaney of The Athletic reports.

Mike Davis sits atop the depth chart in the Falcons' remade backfield, but Ollison is getting a substantial number of snaps in camp. The backup job is Ollison's to lose, suggesting offseason addition Cordarrelle Patterson is likely to be used more as a gadget guy and special teams ace than as a traditional running back.

  • Zack Moss RB | CIN

Bills' Zack Moss: Moving past injury

Moss has not appeared to struggle with surgically repaired ankle early in training camp, while he told Chris Brown of the Bills' official site that he's cleared the mental hurdle of thinking about it when he runs.

Moss should be plenty ready for the regular season, though the Bills have enough depth at the position that they can take it easy on him, even leading into the regular season if need be. What remains unclear is how the carries will be divided between himself and Devin Singletary, and to a lesser extent newcomer Matt Breida.

  • Kenyan Drake RB | GB

Raiders' Kenyan Drake: Back at practice

Drake (undisclosed) returned to practice Friday, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports.

Drake landed on the active/non-football injury list Wednesday with an undisclosed issue, though the Raiders didn't appear to be particularly concerned. He was considered day-to-day with a chance of returning to practice Friday, and he has indeed done so.
