  • Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Set to reprise lead role

As training camp approaches, Taylor continues to head an Indianapolis backfield that also includes returnee Nyheim Hines and newcomer Phillip Lindsay, Kevin Hickey of USA Today reports.

Taylor thus is set to reprise his lead role this coming season, one that yielded a league-high 1,811 rushing yards to go along with 18 TDs on 322 carries in 17 games in 2021. The 23-year-old also chipped in 40 catches on 51 targets for 360 yards and two more scores in an effort that has his name currently atop most 2022 fantasy draft boards. While Taylor is the team's clear-cut top early-down option and in the process is poised to maintain elite fantasy status, Hines will continue to provide a pass-catching/change-of-pace presence out of the Colts backfield, with Lindsay the favorite to secure the team's No. 3 RB role now that Marlon Mack is no longer in the mix. Also vying for depth chart slotting will be Deon Jackson, Ty'Son Williams, D'Vonte Price and CJ Verdell.

  • Dolphins' Raheem Mostert: Achieves medical clearance

Mostert (knee) announced via his personal Twitter account Monday that he has received medical clearance.

Mostert will take the field when Dolphins' veterans report for training camp Tuesday, which is a positive development as he works to return to 100 percent health by Week 1. The 30-year-old veteran stands to spend training camp competing with Sony Michel for work in what looks to be a developing backfield by committee, one which fellow newcomer Chase Edmonds is the presumed favorite to lead. Holdovers Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed look slated for depth roles, if they crack the final roster.

  • Jaguars' James Robinson: Avoids PUP list to start camp

Robinson (Achilles) will not begin training camp on the PUP list, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

Coach Doug Pederson said Robinson's ability to avoid the PUP list to open camp "says a lot." Still, Pederson said the plan remains to "be cautious with [Robinson] and make sure he's ready when he's ready," an indication that the team won't rush the running back in his recovery. With 2021 first-round pick Travis Etienne in the fold and eager to make an impression on the NFL field, the Jaguars have the luxury of being able to take a cautious approach toward Robinson's recovery from a torn Achilles that he suffered in late December. It remains to be seen when Robinson will receive clearance to resume practicing in full, but all signs indicate his recovery process has been positive thus far. Sidestepping the PUP list to begin training camp offers reason for encouragement about Robinson's chances of being available Week 1, or at least much earlier than expected.

  • 49ers' Tyrion Davis-Price: Will compete for backup job in camp

Davis-Price has an opportunity to secure the primary backup role to Elijah Mitchell in training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Mitchell had a breakout rookie campaign in 2021, so there's no controversy as to who will head the 49ers backfield this season. However, the change-of-pace/backup role is up for grabs, and Davis-Price is in prime position to prove his meddle and claim the job if he can outperform veteran Jeff Wilson and San Francisco's third-round pick from a year ago, Trey Sermon. From a fantasy perspective, Davis-Price shouldn't project to be an impact player Week 1 if Mitchell stays healthy this preseason, but the former possesses the north-south physical running style to produce rushing stats and touchdown potential should he be called upon to start this season.

  • Samaje Perine RB | CIN

Bengals' Samaje Perine: Lands on PUP list

Perine (undisclosed) was placed on the Bengals' active/PUP list Saturday.

Perine can be removed from this list and practice at any point before the regular season, but he will need to first receive a corresponding medical clearance. The running back's addition to this list comes as somewhat of a surprise after he went through voluntary OTAs without any reported injuries. Perine played 16 games as the Bengals' secondary running back behind Joe Mixon last season, recording 442 scrimmage yards and two scores on 82 total touches, but he likely will have to compete with fellow backup Chris Evans to maintain this spot heading into the regular season.

  • Kyren Williams RB | LAR

Rams' Kyren Williams: Begins camp on PUP list

The Rams will place Williams (foot) on the active/PUP list to open training camp, Stu Jackson of the team's official site reports.

Williams is in the midst of his recovery from a broken foot suffered in early June during L.A.'s offseason program. At the time, coach Sean McVay told Cameron DeSilva of USA Today that the rookie fifth-round pick would be sidelined until the early portion of training camp, which starts for the Rams on Saturday. Williams is eligible to practice and take part in preseason action at any point, so once he's healthy he'll vie for slotting behind the team's top running backs Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson.

  • Packers' Patrick Taylor: Opening camp on PUP list

Taylor (undisclosed) has been placed on the PUP list ahead of training camp, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.

The same applies to fellow running back Kylin Hill, who is bouncing back from a torn ACL that he suffered last October. Both players can come off the PUP list at any time during training camp, and once they do, the duo will slot in behind Green Bay's top backfield options Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Ravens' Gus Edwards: Starting camp on PUP list

Edwards (knee) has been placed on the active/PUP list by the Ravens, Clifton Brown of the team's official site reports.

Also landing on the list is fellow running back J.K. Dobbins, who, like Edwards, is working his way back from a torn ACL that he suffered prior to the start of the 2021 regular season. Either of the players can come off the PUP list at any time during training camp, though neither has a concrete timetable for a return to practice. When healthy, Dobbins profiles as the Ravens' top backfield option, with Edwards next in line for carries, and in that context the status of the duo will need to be closely monitored ahead of Week 1. Also in the team's backfield mix are Mike Davis, Tyler Badie and Justice Hill (Achilles).

  • J.K. Dobbins RB | DEN

Ravens' J.K. Dobbins: To open camp on PUP list

Dobbins (knee) has been placed on the active/PUP list by the Ravens, Clifton Brown of the team's official site reports.

The same applies to fellow running back Gus Edwards, who, like Dobbins, is bouncing back from a torn ACL that he suffered prior to the start of the 2021 regular season. Both players can come off the PUP list at any time during training camp, though neither has a concrete timetable for a return to practice. While there's been some speculation that Dobbins is no lock to be ready for Week 1 action, the 2020 second-rounder -- who profiles as the Ravens' top backfield option when healthy -- recently declared he's sure he'll be ready to play by that time.

  • Josh Jacobs RB | GB

Raiders' Josh Jacobs: Back at practice

Jacobs (undisclosed) participated in Thursday's training camp practice, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.

The Raiders won't practice in pads until next week, but Jacobs' participation in Thursday's drills demonstrate that he's past the undisclosed issue that caused him to miss time during the team's OTAs. As the coming season approaches, the 2019 first-rounder heads a running back corps that also includes Kenyan Drake, Brandon Bolden and rookie fourth-rounder Zamir White. With the Raiders having declined Jacobs' fifth-year contract option, the 24-year-old approaches the coming campaign in a contract year with much to prove. If he can stay healthy, look for Jacobs to continue to handle a key early-down role for Las Vegas, with Drake mixing in and both Bolden and White also candidates to earn touches. Though Reed and Vic Tafur both suggest that White has the potential to start down the road, it remains to be seen how heavily he'll be used as a rookie. Regardless of how the Raiders' carries end up being distributed, however, the team's backfield will be working within the framework of an offense that's been fortified by the addition of elite wideout Davante Adams.
