  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Set for lead role in playoff opener

Wilson is set to lead Miami's backfield in Sunday's playoff game against the Bills, as Adam Beasley of Pro Football Network reports that Raheem Mostert (thumb) has been ruled out.

Wilson should see the bulk of carries in Mostert's absence, and Miami will likely try to lean on its running game with third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson under center. Salvon Ahmed will back up Wilson, who mustered 52 scrimmage yards and a touchdown on 14 touches against the Texans when Mostert sat out in Week 12.

  • Dolphins' Raheem Mostert: Ruled out for wild-card round

Mostert (thumb) has been ruled out for Sunday's playoff game in Buffalo, Adam Beasley of Pro Football Network reports.

Mostert will be sidelined by the broken thumb he suffered in the Week 18 win over the Jets. Miami will roll out a shorthanded offense against the Bills, with third-stringer Skylar Thompson under center. Jeff Wilson figures to lead the backfield in Mostert's absence, with Salvon Ahmed spelling him. Mostert's absence also creates a vacancy at kick returner, which could be filled by Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill or Cedrick Wilson (hip/groin).

  • Kene Nwangwu RB | NYJ

Vikings' Kene Nwangwu: Dealing with illness

Nwangwu is questionable for Sunday's wild-card matchup against the Giants due to an illness, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Nwangwu didn't practice Friday due to an illness, and his status for the wild-card matchup is officially in question. If the reserve running back doesn't suit up, Jalen Reagor, K.J. Osborn and Ty Chandler would be candidates for kick-return duties.

  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Ravens' Gus Edwards: Good to go Sunday

Edwards (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's playoff opener against the Bengals.

Edwards, who previously relayed that he had cleared the NFL's concussion protocol, was listed as a full practice participant Friday, paving the way for him to remain part of the Ravens' backfield mix this weekend. With top signal caller Lamar Jackson (knee) still out and Tyler Huntley (shoulder, questionable) a candidate to draw the start at QB on Sunday, the Ravens could lean heavily on their ground game versus Cincinnati. In that context, Edwards figures to log complementary touches behind J.K. Dobbins, with Justice Hill and/or Kenyan Drake in reserve.

  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Ravens' Gus Edwards: Clears concussion protocol

Edwards (head) has cleared concussion protocol and expects to play in Sunday's game at Cincinnati, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.

With Lamar Jackson (knee) out and Tyler Huntley (shoulder) a game-time decision, the Ravens will continue to lean on their rushing attack and defense. It's a tall task against the Bengals, but Edwards should provide some additional punch behind lead back J.K. Dobbins.

  • Chargers' Larry Rountree: Elevated for wild-card round

Rountree was elevated from the Chargers' practice squad to the active roster Friday.

Rountree will join the Chargers for their playoff matchup against the Jaguars in the wild-card round Saturday. The running back garnered only 13 carries for 19 yards this season and likely won't have much of an impact on offense versus Jacksonville.

  • Aaron Jones RB | MIN

Packers' Aaron Jones: Anticipated back in 2023

General Manager Brian Gutekunst said Friday he expects Jones to be on the Packers during the 2023 season, but he didn't rule out a contract restructure to reduce the running back's contract, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Green Bay has a potential 'out' in Jones' contract this offseason, but it appears the dynamic 28-year-old remains in the team's future plans. Jones is currently heading into the final two seasons of his four-year, $48 million contract, however, and a restructure could be necessary for his salary to fit into the Packers' scheme. Green Bay is heading into an offseason that could contain a number of significant decisions, so keeping a versatile player who accumulated 1,516 yards from scrimmage and seven combined touchdowns in 2022 could help ensure some amount of stability on offense.

  • Jerrion Ealy WR | KC

    Jerrion Ealy: Loses spot again

Ealy was cut from the Chiefs' practice squad Thursday, Charles Goldman of USA Today reports.

Ealy was previously cut by the team Dec. 27, then brought back Jan. 3. It's unclear whether or not he'll get the same opportunity this time. The 22-year-old was brought in by the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in May, but he never made it to the active roster.

  • 49ers' Christian McCaffrey: Clear for Saturday

McCaffrey (knee) doesn't have a designation for Saturday's wild-card game against the Seahawks, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

McCaffrey endured some practice limitations this week due to lingering knee soreness, but as has been the case for the previous six weeks, he won't carry a designation into game day. During that six-game stretch, he's been the engine that drives the 49ers offense, turning 128 touches into 767 yards from scrimmage and seven TDs.

  • Gus Edwards RB | LAC

Ravens' Gus Edwards: Returns to limited practice

Edwards (concussion) was listed as a limited practice participant Thursday.

Edwards, who landed in the NFL's concussion protocol following Week 18 action, didn't practice Wednesday, but the running back's return in a limited capacity Thursday offers hope that he could gain clearance for Sunday night's playoff game against the Bengals. However, unless Edwards practices fully Friday, he figures to head into the weekend with an official injury designation.
