Yankees' Matt Carpenter: Still not cleared for activities

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Carpenter (foot) has yet to be cleared for baseball activities, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. "I am not sure," Boone said, when asked if Carpenter has a chance to return this season. "I think it kind of depends on when they X-ray next and then what that allows him to do from a ramp-up standpoint."

Carpenter didn't require surgery to address the fractured left foot he sustained Aug. 8, and while he's shown improvement in the subsequent five weeks, he hasn't made enough progress to the point where he can begin on-field workouts. With just two and a half weeks left in the regular season, Carpenter seems unlikely to be ready to return from the 10-day injured list by the first week of October, but he could have a chance at coming back for the postseason if the Yankees are able to make a deep run.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Stays hot in series finale

Alvarez went 2-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI, a run and a strikeout during Sunday's 11-2 win over Oakland.

Alvarez got a day off during Wednesday's series finale in Detroit, but he was dominant during the Astros' four-game set against Oakland by racking up seven extra-base hits over 17 at-bats. The 25-year-old has recorded extra-base hits in eight of the nine matchups during his current hitting streak, hitting .485 with six home runs, six doubles, 12 runs, 11 RBI, six walks and three strikeouts over that stretch.

  • Eloy Jimenez DH | TOR

White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Dominant against Tigers

Jimenez went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI, two runs and a strikeout during Sunday's 11-5 win over the Tigers.

Jimenez has had little trouble reaching base recently, and Sunday's performance marked his sixth multi-hit game over the last 12 matchups. The 25-year-old has been a well-rounded contributor over that stretch, hitting .404 with five home runs, four doubles, 14 RBI and 11 runs.

  • Mark Canha LF | TEX

Mets' Mark Canha: Steals base in win

Canha went 1-for-5 with a stolen base in a 7-3 win Sunday over Pittsburgh.

Canha singled and stole his third base of the season in the seventh inning. He's reached base safely in 13 straight games but is just 10-for-47 in that span as he's walked five times and been hit by four pitches. After leading the league with 27 HBP in 2021, he's second in baseball this year with 21.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Posts steal in win

Blackmon went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Cubs.

Blackmon has found a little more consistency at the plate, going 4-for-16 across his last four games. He's also struck out five times in that span. The steal Sunday was his fourth of the season, his most since he stole 12 bases in 2018. The 36-year-old has maintained a .259/.310/.415 slash line with 16 home runs, 75 RBI, 59 runs scored, 20 doubles and five triples in 127 contests, though he's also seen roughly one day off per week lately.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Giants' Joc Pederson: Sitting against southpaw

Pederson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The lefty-hitting Pederson will remain on the bench for the second straight contest while Los Angeles brings southpaw Andrew Heaney to the hill. Luis Gonzalez will replace Pederson in left field.

  • Miguel Cabrera DH | DET

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera: Will be activated Monday

The Tigers intend to activate Cabrera (biceps) from the 10-day injured list prior to Monday's series opener in Baltimore, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The future Hall of Famer will rejoin the Tigers for the final two and a half weeks of the season, but he'll likely be relegated to a part-time role while Detroit prioritizes at-bats for its developmental players. Prior to landing on the shelf Sept. 3 with a left biceps strain, Cabrera produced a career-worst .622 OPS over 393 plate appearances.

  • Brewers' Andrew McCutchen: Steps out of lineup

McCutchen is not in the lineup Sunday against the Yankees.

McCutchen started the past nine games for Milwaukee but will head to the bench Sunday amid an 0-for-13 slump. Rowdy Tellez will serve as the designated hitter while Keston Hiura starts at first base.

  • Nick Solak 1B | PIT

Rangers' Nick Solak: Done for season

Solak is done for the season due to a right foot fracture, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

A roster move will come Tuesday. Solak, 27, has been at least 10 percent worse than a league-average hitter in each of the last three seasons, which is a problem given that he is supposed to be a bat-first player. He will look to stick with the Rangers organization as a bench piece, but it would not be surprising if he were traded or cast off the 40-man roster this offseason.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

    Angels' Shohei Ohtani: Blanks Seattle

Ohtani (13-8) earned the win during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Seattle, allowing three hits and one walk while recording eight strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.

Ohtani scattered his four baserunners evenly and didn't allow any Mariners past second base while helping himself out with an RBI double in the first inning and a run in the fourth. The 28-year-old tossed 73 of 107 pitches for strikes with 16 of the swinging variety and has now won four of his last five starts, posting a 0.53 ERA with 37 strikeouts in 34 innings during the span. Ohtani's 2.43 ERA and 196 strikeouts rank sixth in MLB, while only Spencer Strider has thrown fewer than his 148 innings among those in the top 14 on the strikeout leaderboard. Ohtani is currently projected to take the mound again next weekend in Minnesota.
