Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter went 0 for 4 Thursday but drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in his team's 4-2 win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the World Series.

Carpenter grounded out twice and struck out once in his first three at-bats. However, he was given the chance to pay the hero in the seventh inning with his team down one, coming up with the bases loaded and just one out. He delivered a fly out to left field, bringing not just the runner home from third base for Carpenter's RBI, but also another run on a poor throw by the pitcher that tried to nail the runner heading to third.

Carpenter committed a fielding error on a tough play in the eighth inning trying to make a hurried throw to get Jacoby Ellsbury, but it didn't come back to haunt him as the Cardinals kept the Red Sox off the board in the inning. He's 1 for 8 as the series heads to St. Louis.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters Monday that third baseman Miguel Cabrera may end up needing surgery on his injured groin. For the most part, Cabrera played through a Grade 2-3 strain, sitting out just two of the team's final nine regular season games. McCutchen went 2 for 2 with a single, a double, a pair of walks and a pair of runs scored. McCutchen has reached base 12 times in 18 plate appearances for a brilliant .667 on-base percentage this postseason.

Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes placed his injury issue behind him as he went deep against the Tigers in Game 1 of the American League Division Series Friday night.

Cespedes took Detroit starter Max Scherzer deep for a two-run shot in the seventh inning to cut the lead to one run. He finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI in a 3-2 defeat.

Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will start in left field for Game 1 of the ALDS against Detroit, MLB.com reports. Cespedes had been limited to designated hitter due to a shoulder injury down the stretch of the regular season, but he appears to be over it.
