Titans' Tyjae Spears: Recovering from sore ankle
Spears was a non-participant in Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury.
The Titans' top two running backs are both managing sore ankles to begin Week 3 prep, as Tony Pollard was also sidelined for Wednesday's session. Head coach Robert Saleh didn't indicate that either back is at major risk of sitting out Sunday's game against the Giants, but Spears will nonetheless need to upgrade to full practice participation by Friday to avoid taking an injury designation into the weekend.

Titans' Tyjae Spears: Sitting out practice Wednesday
Titans head coach Robert Saleh said that Spears won't practice Wednesday due to unspecified soreness, Turron Davenport of ESPN.com reports.
Tony Pollard is also dealing with soreness and will sit out Wednesday's session, but Saleh didn't provide any further specifics about either running back's injury. Though Pollard sits atop the depth chart, Spears has seen a fair amount of work in a change-of-pace role. Through the Titans' first two games, Spears has logged 53 yards on 10 carries to go with four receptions for 41 yards on six targets.

Titans' Tyjae Spears: Logs 70 yards against Philadelphia
Spears turned seven carries into 41 yards and brought in both of his targets for 29 yards during the Titans' 24-20 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
Spears was on the field for only 19 of the Titans' 53 offensive snaps (35.8 percent) and saw noticeably less playing time than lead back Tony Pollard (29 snaps). That said, Spears managed to accumulate 70 yards on nine touches, his most yards in a game since Week 16 of the 2025 season against the Chiefs (105). The fourth-year pro also helped the Titans take the lead late with a 27-yard carry on third-and-22, ultimately leading to a 33-yard field goal from Joey Slye four plays later. The Titans will hit the road for the first time this season Week 3 against the Giants.

Titans' Tyjae Spears: Totals 24 yards in Week 1 loss
Spears rushed three times for 12 yards and caught two of four targets for an additional 12 yards in Sunday's 23-10 loss to the Jets.
Tony Pollard narrowly out-snapped Spears, 26-25, in the season opener, as the former out-carried Spears seven to three in what was a decidedly negative game script for the Titans. Spears out-targeted his backfield mate four to two and ran 14 routes to Pollard's seven. This looks like a pretty even split, but it'll be tough for either back to produce weekly fantasy reliability in one of the league's worst offenses with a swinging-gate offensive line.

Titans' Tyjae Spears: Role seemingly unchanged from 2025
Spears is among the four running backs that made the Titans' initial 53-man roster.
Based on preseason usage, Spears is firmly entrenched as the team's top alternative to Tony Pollard in the backfield. Spears produced 536 scrimmage yards in 2024 and 547 scrimmage yards in 2025 while filling such a role. His 838-yard rookie season in 2023 came prior to Pollard's arrival in Tennessee. Rookie fifth-round pick Nicholas Singleton didn't show anything during preseason action that would indicate he's an immediate threat to Spears' role, while Julius Chestnut is likely ticketed for a role on special teams.

Spears rushed twice for two yards and caught all three of his targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 19-16 preseason win over the Seahawks.
Spears featured on Tennessee's second and third drives with the starters after Tony Pollard turned three touches into 45 scrimmage yards on the team's opening possession. Pollard is expected to lead the backfield once again, but Spears should get his fair share of touches in a prominent change-of-pace role. Spears has 383 combined carries and targets in 42 regular-season appearances through three years in the NFL for a career average of 9.1 touches per game on offense.

There's no indication Spears is dealing with anything serious, but he may be held out of practice until his current soreness subsides. The 25-year-old is expected to serve as Tennessee's No. 2 RB this season, and the could be more of a "1B" to starter Tony Pollard than a pure backup. Spears has 1,048 regular-season rushing yards and 873 receiving yards through three NFL campaigns, so he has the potential to make an impact in fantasy as a dual-threat asset.
