Panthers' John Metchie: Takes over return duties
The Panthers list Metchie as the top kickoff and punt returner on their unofficial depth chart after waiving Jimmy Horn on Tuesday, Mike Kaye of ESPN.com reports.
A healthy inactive for the Panthers' Week 1 loss to the Bears, Metchie looks poised to make his Carolina debut during this weekend's game in Atlanta. Though he'll presumably be the Panthers' No. 5 receiver in Week 2, Metchie isn't expected to be in line for extensive playing time on offense and will make most of his contributions as a return man.

Panthers' John Metchie: Inactive vs. Chicago
Metchie (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Bears, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Metchie did enough in training camp to earn a spot on the Panthers' 53-man roster, though he'll observe Sunday's game in street clothes while Jimmy Horn and Brycen Tremayne serve as Carolina's rotational wide receivers behind Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette. Metchie's next chance to play is Week 2 against the Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Panthers' John Metchie: Quiet in preseason finale
Metchie caught one of three targets for five yards and returned two kickoffs for 47 yards in Friday's 16-13 preseason win over the Texans.
The 26-year-old journeyman is on his fourth team in the last three seasons, but Metchie has a path to winning a spot on the Panthers' Week 1 roster due to Chris Brazzell (knee) being out for the year, Xavier Legette (ankle) limping as well, and Trevor Etienne -- the team's top kickoff returner in 2025 -- exiting Friday's exhibition early after picking up an ankle issue. Metchie's had plenty of trouble staying healthy himself since being a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by Houston, and he's never topped 29 catches or 256 receiving yards in a season.

Panthers' John Metchie: Makes case for WR3 spot
Metchie caught six of seven targets for a game-high 77 yards in Friday's 34-17 preseason win over the Jaguars.
While Metchie led the Panthers in catches, targets and receiving yards, he didn't make his first reception until the second half, as Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker worked with the starters in the first quarter and David Moore and Brycen Tremayne were Kenny Pickett's wideouts in the second quarter. Once Metchie got onto the field, however, he made an immediate impact and showed strong chemistry with Pickett. Now on his fourth NFL team after being a second-round pick of the Texans in 2023, Metchie is coming off the best stretch of his career in the second half last season with the Jets. The Panthers' WR depth chart remains unsettled behind McMillan and Coker, and Metchie's effort Friday should keep him in the running for a significant role once the regular season rolls around.

With rookie third-round pick Chris Brazzell (knee) ruled out for the season, Metchie might have a chance to push Xavier Legette for the No. 3 job, though this report suggests Metchie is also on the roster bubble. Metchie and Legette offer contrasting styles, which could work in Metchie's favor on a team where the top two wide receivers (Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker) look a lot more like Legette. At 5-foot-11, 187 pounds, Metchie figures to take a lot of snaps in the slot if he ends up earning a role in the Carolina offense. He recorded three receptions on six targets for 38 yards and a 36-yard kick return Thursday night in the Hall of Fame Game against Arizona.

Panthers' John Metchie: Reunites with Bryce Young
Metchie is signing a one-year deal with Carolina, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
A 2022 second-round pick, Metchie spent time with three different teams during the length of his rookie contract after missing the 2022 season to recover from cancer. He'll now reunite with college teammate Bryce Young, likely competing for a depth role at wide receiver behind Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker.

Jets' John Metchie: Logs 29 catches in seven Jets games
Metchie caught 33 of 48 targets for 274 yards and two touchdowns while rushing three times for minus-5 yards in 16 games split between the Eagles and Jets in 2025.
Metchie had just four catches for 18 yards in seven games with the Eagles but was much more involved after being traded to the Jets, catching 29 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns in nine games with Gang Green. The 2022 second-round pick of the Texans has already bounced around to three NFL teams, but it was encouraging that he took on a larger role in his most recent landing spot. The Jets plan to re-sign Metchie as a restricted free agent, and he can be tentatively penciled in as a top-three wide receiver for the team, barring any notable additions via free agency or the draft.

Jets' John Metchie: Team-best 41 receiving yards
Metchie caught all three of his targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 42-10 loss to the Patriots.
Metchie led the Jets in receiving yards as Brady Cook threw for only 152 yards in another lopsided loss. Cook has just one touchdown pass in four games (three starts) as the team's starting quarterback, so expectations should remain tempered for Metchie and the rest of the Jets' passing game in Week 18 against the Bills.

Metchie's streak of consecutive games with at least four catches ended at four. It's tough to trust any member of the Jets' passing offense with undrafted rookie Brady Cook under center, but Metchie would gain a bit more appeal if Gang Green turns back to Tyrod Taylor or Justin Fields (knee) under center in Week 17 against the Patriots. Metchie caught a touchdown pass from Fields in Week 11 against the Patriots.
