McKinney recorded five tackles (four solo) and one interception during the Packers' 35-14 loss to the Falcons on Thursday.
It looked like the Packers' defense was going to make Thursday night a miserable 2026 debut for Michael Penix after the Falcons' QB was picked off by McKinney on the fourth play of Atlanta's first drive of the game, although Green Bay's offense was unable to capitalize on the takeaway. It was only two seasons ago that McKinney led the NFL with eight interceptions, though he's logged three picks across 19 regular-season games since the beginning of the 2025 campaign. He's opened the 2026 campaign with 12 tackles (nine solo) and one interception, and he's behind pace for the third 100th-tackle season of his seven-year NFL career.

Packers' Xavier McKinney: Restructuring contract
McKinney's $4.25 million salary will be converted to a bonus for 2026, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports.
The Packers are restructuring McKinney's contract to free up cap space. McKinney is entering the third year of a four-year, $67 million contract he signed with Green Bay in March of 2024. He has compiled 10 interceptions and 195 tackles in his first two regular seasons with the Packers as one of the NFL's best safeties.

McKinney finished the 2025 regular season with 107 tackles (54 solo), including 1.0 sacks, 10 pass defenses (two interceptions) and one forced fumble across 16 regular-season games in 2025.
McKinney reached 100-plus tackles for the second time in his six-year career, with both instances coming over the last three seasons. He also reached double-digit pass defenses for a third consecutive season (and fourth time for his NFL career), though his two interceptions were far less than the eight he accrued during the 2024 campaign. McKinney signed a four-year, $67 million contract with the Packers in March 2024, so the Alabama product is under contract with Green Bay through 2027.
