  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Struggles against Blue Jackets

Primeau stopped 18 of 24 shots in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Blue Jackets. Primeau wasn't at his best in his first two starts, but this was his first loss of the season. He's allowed 13 goals on 80 shots while serving as Anthony Stolarz's backup over the first month of the season. Joseph Woll (personal) has resumed practicing with the Maple Leafs but still needs time to get up to game speed. With no back-to-back sets in the next week, it's unclear if Primeau will get another start with the big club before Woll returns to action.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Drawing start against Columbus

Primeau will defend the road crease against Columbus on Wednesday, Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers reports. Primeau will draw his third start of the year in the second half of Toronto's back-to-back after Anthony Stolarz played in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Calgary. Over his previous two outings this season, Primeau has gone 2-0-0 with a 3.47 GAA and an .875 save percentage.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Earns second win of season

Primeau made 23 saves in a 4-3 overtime win over Buffalo on Saturday. Primeau was expected to get the start after Anthony Stolarz (rest) played Friday. He has won both games he started for Toronto, recording a 3.46 GAA and an .875 save percentage. Joseph Woll (personal) returned to the ice Saturday, but it's unclear when he will be ready to suit up for the Leafs. He cannot play in a game until at least Nov. 1 due to his LTIR status. Primeau will remain with the big club until Woll does, and the 26-year-old Primeau will likely get at least one more start.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Starting Saturday at home

Primeau will guard the home goal in Saturday's game versus the Sabres, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports. Primeau will get his second start of the season in a rematch of Friday's game, which the Sabres won 5-3 with Anthony Stolarz in goal. In his Toronto debut, Primeau stopped 26 of 30 shots in a 7-4 win over the Predators. He'll be looking to put in a better performance this time, especially with news of Joseph Woll (personal) beginning to ramp up activities as he starts to work his way back to game fitness.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: First win with new team

Primeau made 26 saves in a 7-4 win over the Predators on Tuesday. It was Primeau's debut as a Leaf. It was his first NHL game since Dec. 12, 2024, when he was with the Canadiens. The Leafs claimed him off waivers from the Hurricanes on Oct. 6. Primeau will remain with the big club until Joseph Woll (personal) returns.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Gets starting nod Tuesday

Primeau will be between the pipes at home versus the Predators on Tuesday, Luke Fox of Sportsnet reports. Primeau will be making his Maple Leafs debut after being claimed off waivers by Toronto on Oct. 6. For now, the 26-year-old Primeau figures to fill the No. 2 role for Toronto but could find himself back on waivers once Joseph Woll (personal) rejoins the team. Given the uncertainty around Primeau's long-term status with the Leafs, fantasy managers will probably want to consider alternative options in the crease.

  • Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Claimed by Toronto

Primeau was claimed off waivers by the Maple Leafs on Monday. Primeau was waived by the Hurricanes on Sunday, and he'll get an opportunity for a fresh start heading into the 2025-26 season. He could open the year as Anthony Stolarz's backup if Dennis Hildeby heads to AHL Toronto, and James Reimer gets released from his professional tryout agreement. The Leafs needed goaltending depth due to the indefinite absence of Joseph Woll (personal), who is on leave from the team, and Primeau could be a decent stopgap solution.

  • Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Waived Sunday

Primeau was placed on waivers by the Hurricanes for the purpose of assignment to AHL Chicago, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Sunday. Primeau, acquired by the Hurricanes in an offseason trade, will begin the season in the AHL, assuming he clears waivers. It's not too surprising considering the 26-year-old is looking up at established NHL goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov, and now the addition of Brandon Bussi off waivers further complicates his situation. Primeau was very impressive in his 26 regular-season starts last year with AHL Laval, registering a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save percentage.

  • Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Starting preseason clash

Primeau will get the starting nod at home versus Tampa Bay on Monday and might play the whole game, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports. Primeau will make his Hurricanes debut after coming over from Montreal, the club he spent the past six seasons with. As a depth option with Montreal last season, Primeau played in a mere 11 regular-season contests, going 2-3-1 with a 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage. The 26-year-old Primeau will need to really impress in camp if he is going to force his way onto the Opening Night roster.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Returned to AHL Laval

Primeau was loaned to AHL Laval on Saturday. Primeau was the backup goalie behind Jakub Dobes after Sam Montembeault (groin) sustained an injury in Game 3 versus Washington. Despite a 20-save shutout by Jacob Fowler in a 4-0 win over AHL Cleveland on Friday, Primeau could return to the crease in the Calder Cup Playoffs. The 25-year-old Primeau was sensational with Laval in the regular season, going 21-2-2 with a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save percentage across 26 appearances.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Summoned from AHL

Primeau was recalled from AHL Laval on Sunday. Primeau posted a 2-3-1 record with a 4.70 GAA and an .836 save percentage across 11 outings with the Canadiens during the 2024-25 regular season. If Sam Montembeault (lower body) is unavailable for Game 4 against Washington on Sunday, Primeau could be Jakub Dobes' backup.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Logs second AHL win

Primeau stopped all 16 shots faced Friday in AHL Laval's 6-0 win over Cleveland. Primeau's won two straight starts since rejoining the Rocket and has done it with style, allowing one goal on 44 shots (.977 save percentage) as he works to get back to the NHL. However, Jakub Dobes does not appear to be going anywhere for the time being. He's won all three starts with Montreal, including victories over Florida, Colorado and Washington.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Clears waivers

Primeau cleared waivers Sunday and will report to AHL Laval, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports. Primeau was placed on waivers Saturday after posting a 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage. Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis lost confidence in the 25-year-old goalie, whose last start was Dec. 1. Jakub Dobes, who was called up from AHL Laval to replace Primeau, shut out the Panthers in his NHL debut Saturday.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Summoned for relief

Primeau allowed three goals on seven shots in Thursday's 9-2 loss to Pittsburgh. Primeau hadn't been on the ice since giving up five goals on 29 shots in a 6-3 loss to Boston on Dec. 1. He entered midway through the Penguins six-goal third period. The relief entrance marked the fourth time he's replaced a struggling Sam Montembeault. Primeau has a 4.70 GAA and .836 save percentage through 11 appearances (seven starts).

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Holds on for win

Primeau stopped 20 of 23 shots in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win against Columbus. Primeau backstopped Montreal's first overtime win of the season. His defense let him down on the first two goals and the third got past him on a carom off a Montreal skate. It was a hopeful outing for Primeau, who made his first start since Nov. 11. He entered the night with a 4.59 goals-against average and .842 save percentage, which explains the recent lull in activity. Montreal continues its road trip Saturday in New York against the Rangers.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Gets starting nod for Wednesday

Primeau will be between the pipes on the road against Columbus on Wednesday. Primeau will get the second game of the Habs' back-to-back while Sam Montembeault guards the crease versus Utah on Tuesday. In his eight appearances this year, the 25-year-old Primeau is sporting a 1-2-1 record, 4.59 GAA and a career-worst .842 save percentage. Those numbers certainly aren't going to give the coaching staff confidence to deploy Primeau for more than the occasional back-to-back.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Guards net for third period

Primeau replaced starter Sam Montembeault for the third period of Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Golden Knights. For the third time this season, Primeau replaced an ineffective Montembeault, who gave up five goals in the second period. Primeau faced just three shots, giving up a goal to Jack Eichel. Montembeault is ripe for being replaced as the No. 1, but Primeau sports an ugly 4.59 GAA and a disappointing .842 save percentage through eight appearances.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Starting Monday

Primeau will get the road start Monday against the Sabres, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports. It'll be the first start for Primeau since Oct. 31. The 25-year-old netminder is 1-2-1 on the year while struggling to an .861 save percentage and 4.39 GAA. Primeau will face the Sabres, who have won three of their last four games, scoring 15 goals in that span.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Holds on for win

Primeau stopped 23 of 26 shots in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Flyers. The Canadiens led 4-1 for much of the third period, but the Flyers scored twice late in the frame to make things interesting. Primeau was able to hold the fort, earning his first win in four appearances this season. He's allowed a total of 15 goals on 126 shots while going 1-1-1. Sam Montembeault has handled the starting duties for the Canadiens, and that's likely to continue with Primeau doing little to make a case for more playing time. Montreal doesn't have a back-to-back over the next week.

  • Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Fills in for ineffective starter

Primeau entered Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Rangers midway through the first period and stopped 32 of 35 shots. Primeau relieved an ineffective Sam Montembeault, who was chased after letting in four goals on 10 shots. Primeau held strong for awhile and was called on to prevent several high-danger scoring chances before buckling in the third period under a barrage -- New York fired 45 shots on net, had another 20 attempts that missed the mark, and 16 other attempts were blocked. Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis has some time to consider which netminder will start this coming Saturday against the Blues.
