Maple Leafs' Cayden Primeau: Claimed by Toronto
Primeau was claimed off waivers by the Maple Leafs on Monday.
Primeau was waived by the Hurricanes on Sunday, and he'll get an opportunity for a fresh start heading into the 2025-26 season. He could open the year as Anthony Stolarz's backup if Dennis Hildeby heads to AHL Toronto, and James Reimer gets released from his professional tryout agreement. The Leafs needed goaltending depth due to the indefinite absence of Joseph Woll (personal), who is on leave from the team, and Primeau could be a decent stopgap solution.

Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Waived Sunday
Primeau was placed on waivers by the Hurricanes for the purpose of assignment to AHL Chicago, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Sunday.
Primeau, acquired by the Hurricanes in an offseason trade, will begin the season in the AHL, assuming he clears waivers. It's not too surprising considering the 26-year-old is looking up at established NHL goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov, and now the addition of Brandon Bussi off waivers further complicates his situation. Primeau was very impressive in his 26 regular-season starts last year with AHL Laval, registering a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save percentage.

Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Starting against Nashville
Primeau will start Sunday's preseason game at home against the Predators, Brooks Bratten of the Predators' official site reports.
Primeau started the Hurricanes' preseason opener against the Lightning on Monday and turned aside 18 of 20 shots while playing the whole game. He'll have another chance to start Sunday, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him head to the minors ahead of the regular season.

Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Starting preseason clash
Primeau will get the starting nod at home versus Tampa Bay on Monday and might play the whole game, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Primeau will make his Hurricanes debut after coming over from Montreal, the club he spent the past six seasons with. As a depth option with Montreal last season, Primeau played in a mere 11 regular-season contests, going 2-3-1 with a 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage. The 26-year-old Primeau will need to really impress in camp if he is going to force his way onto the Opening Night roster.

Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Signs extension following trade
Primeau has signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Hurricanes, the team announced Tuesday.
Primeau was a restricted free agent when he was acquired by Carolina from Montreal on Monday in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round pick. The 25-year-old dominated with AHL Laval during the 2024-25 regular season, posting a 21-2-3 record, 1.92 GAA and .927 save percentage across 26 appearances. The Hurricanes are likely to open the season with Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov as their NHL goaltenders, but Primeau should be the first netminder promoted in the event of an injury.

Hurricanes' Cayden Primeau: Traded to Canes
Primeau was traded to the Hurricanes from the Canadiens on Monday in exchange for a seventh-round pick, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports.
Primeau is a restricted free agent, so the Hurricanes will have to sign him and get him under contract. Considering just how dominant the 25-year-old was in the AHL last season, it's a decent bet to make for the Hurricanes, given the cheap acquisition price. He held a 21-2-3 record, with a 1.92 GAA and a .927 save percentage during his time with AHL Laval last year. He brings a decent amount of NHL experience to the table, but he will likely not start there with the Hurricanes, if he signs a new deal, considering the presence of Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Returned to AHL Laval
Primeau was loaned to AHL Laval on Saturday.
Primeau was the backup goalie behind Jakub Dobes after Sam Montembeault (groin) sustained an injury in Game 3 versus Washington. Despite a 20-save shutout by Jacob Fowler in a 4-0 win over AHL Cleveland on Friday, Primeau could return to the crease in the Calder Cup Playoffs. The 25-year-old Primeau was sensational with Laval in the regular season, going 21-2-2 with a 1.96 GAA and a .927 save percentage across 26 appearances.

Primeau was recalled from AHL Laval on Sunday.
Primeau posted a 2-3-1 record with a 4.70 GAA and an .836 save percentage across 11 outings with the Canadiens during the 2024-25 regular season. If Sam Montembeault (lower body) is unavailable for Game 4 against Washington on Sunday, Primeau could be Jakub Dobes' backup.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Logs second AHL win
Primeau stopped all 16 shots faced Friday in AHL Laval's 6-0 win over Cleveland.
Primeau's won two straight starts since rejoining the Rocket and has done it with style, allowing one goal on 44 shots (.977 save percentage) as he works to get back to the NHL. However, Jakub Dobes does not appear to be going anywhere for the time being. He's won all three starts with Montreal, including victories over Florida, Colorado and Washington.

Primeau stopped 27 of 28 shots for AHL Laval in Friday's 2-1 overtime win over Abbotsford.
Primeau made his first start for the Rocket since clearing NHL waivers last weekend. Montreal waived the 25-year-old netminder, who was 2-3-1 with a 4.69 goals-against average and .836 save percentage over 11 outings, and called up Jakub Dobes to serve as the backup to Sam Montembeault. Dobes, who posted a 34-save shutout over Florida in his NHL debut last Saturday, will stick with the Canadiens for now while Primeau attempts to find his game in the AHL.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Clears waivers
Primeau cleared waivers Sunday and will report to AHL Laval, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Primeau was placed on waivers Saturday after posting a 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage. Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis lost confidence in the 25-year-old goalie, whose last start was Dec. 1. Jakub Dobes, who was called up from AHL Laval to replace Primeau, shut out the Panthers in his NHL debut Saturday.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Going on waivers
Primeau will be placed on waivers Saturday, Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette reports.
Primeau made one start in December and currently owns a 4.70 GAA and an .836 save percentage through 11 appearances. A waiver move seemed inevitable after Montreal called up Jakub Dobes from AHL Laval to start Saturday's road contest in Florida. A fresh start elsewhere may be the best thing for Primeau, who crumbled under the pressure of playing in Montreal. If he passes through waivers, Primeau will head to Laval.

Primeau allowed three goals on seven shots in Thursday's 9-2 loss to Pittsburgh.
Primeau hadn't been on the ice since giving up five goals on 29 shots in a 6-3 loss to Boston on Dec. 1. He entered midway through the Penguins six-goal third period. Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Lit up in Boston
Primeau allowed five goals on 29 shots in Sunday's 6-3 loss to the Bruins.
The Bruins jumped on Primeau and the Canadiens with three goals in a 70-second span midway through the first period. The fourth goal allowed was a shorthanded one, but it came on a breakaway, which suggests Primeau wasn't always supported by the team in front of him. Still, it was the fourth time in seven starts that he's allowed at least five goals. Primeau sports a 4.45 GAA and .844 save percentage over 10 outings. Sam Montembeault will likely be back between the pipes Tuesday at home against the Islanders.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Starting Sunday
Primeau will be between the pipes for Sunday's road game versus Boston, according to Marc Denis of RDS.
Primeau will get the second half of Montreal's back-to-back after Sam Montembeault played in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers. The 25-year-old Primeau is coming off a 21-save effort in a 4-3 overtime win over Columbus on Wednesday. He has a 2-2-1 record with a 4.37 GAA and an .846 save percentage through nine appearances this season. Boston is tied for last in the league with 2.32 goals per game in 2024-25.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Holds on for win
Primeau stopped 20 of 23 shots in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win against Columbus.
Primeau backstopped Montreal's first overtime win of the season. His defense let him down on the first two goals and the third got past him on a carom off a Montreal skate. It was a hopeful outing for Primeau, who made his first start since Nov. 11. He entered the night with a 4.59 goals-against average and .842 save percentage, which explains the recent lull in activity. Montreal continues its road trip Saturday in New York against the Rangers.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Gets starting nod for Wednesday
Primeau will be between the pipes on the road against Columbus on Wednesday.
Primeau will get the second game of the Habs' back-to-back while Sam Montembeault guards the crease versus Utah on Tuesday. In his eight appearances this year, the 25-year-old Primeau is sporting a 1-2-1 record, 4.59 GAA and a career-worst .842 save percentage. Those numbers certainly aren't going to give the coaching staff confidence to deploy Primeau for more than the occasional back-to-back.

Canadiens' Cayden Primeau: Guards net for third period
Primeau replaced starter Sam Montembeault for the third period of Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Golden Knights.
For the third time this season, Primeau replaced an ineffective Montembeault, who gave up five goals in the second period. Primeau faced just three shots, giving up a goal to Jack Eichel. Montembeault is ripe for being replaced as the No. 1, but Primeau sports an ugly 4.59 GAA and a disappointing .842 save percentage through eight appearances.
