Rangers' Artemi Panarin: Set to play Opening Night

Head coach Mike Sullivan said Monday that Panarin (lower body) is good to go for Tuesday's Opening Night matchup against the Penguins, Mollie Walker of the New York Post reports.
Panarin was sidelined for the conclusion of preseason action due to an upper-body injury, but he'll be back in action for the start of the regular season. The 33-year-old made 80 regular-season appearances for the Rangers last year, recording 37 goals, 52 assists, 18 hits, 16 PIM and 11 blocked shots while averaging 19:41 of ice time.
The Rangers clarified Friday that Panarin is dealing with an upper-body injury, Vince Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic reports.
Panarin was dealing with a lower-body injury earlier in training camp, but he's now managing an upper-body issue as training camp draws to a close. The Rangers still hope that Panarin will be ready to return in time for Tuesday's Opening Night matchup against the Penguins, but his status appears to be slightly up in the air.

Considering Panarin has yet to return to practice, he should probably be considered doubtful, at best, to play versus the Islanders on Thursday. Still, the fact that the veteran winger is skating bodes well for his availability for the season opener against the Penguins on Oct. 7. Once cleared to play, Panarin is a lock to reclaim his spots on the first line and No. 1 power-play unit.

The severity of Panarin's injury isn't known yet, but even if it's minor, the Rangers will probably exercise an abundance of caution given that we're early in training camp. The 33-year-old had 37 goals and 89 points in 80 appearances with the Rangers last year. He's missed just two regular-season games over the past three campaigns.
