Van Riemsdyk (not injury related) was activated from the non-roster status Saturday.
Van Riemsdyk missed most of training camp due to a personal matter and sat out Thursday's opener against Montreal while getting back up to game speed. He will probably play on the fourth line alongside Michael Rasmussen and Mason Appleton. The Red Wings reassigned defenseman Erik Gustafsson to AHL Grand Rapids in a corresponding move.

Van Riemsdyk won't be in the lineup to face the Blackhawks on Tuesday but should be an option when the team clashes with the Maple Leafs on Thursday. Even if the veteran winger makes the Opening Night roster, he may have to periodically serve as a healthy scratch this season, making him a mid-range fantasy option at best.

Red Wings' James van Riemsdyk: Still missing from camp
Van Riemsdyk hasn't participated in training camp yet due to a personal matter, Rob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now reported Thursday.
It remains unclear how much longer van Riemsdyk will be away from the team. The Red Wings signed the veteran forward to a one-year, $1 million contract in the summer, intending to try him out on the top line. However, his absence from camp has put a hold on those plans.

Red Wings' James van Riemsdyk: Staying in Eastern Conference
Van Riemsdyk signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Red Wings on Tuesday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.
Van Riemsdyk had 16 goals and 36 points across 71 appearances with Columbus in 2024-25, converting at a career-high 18.8 percent rate on 85 shots on goal. That number is due to come back down, but he should provide meaningful depth for a Detroit club that is attempting to make its way back into the postseason for the first time since 2016. This coming season will be van Riemsdyk's 17th NHL campaign.

Van Riemsdyk delivered a goal and two assists in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Capitals.
He helped set up two of Columbus' three first-period goals, then wrapped up the scoring himself late in the third. It was the veteran winger's first multi-point performance since Feb. 27. The Blue Jackets likely wouldn't be anywhere near the playoff race if not for van Riemsdyk, who has helped provide veteran cover for injuries or slumping players. However, the team is as healthy as it has been all year, and van Riemsdyk finds himself crowded out of the lineup with 15 healthy forwards on the roster. That number will rise to 16 when the recently signed Jack Williams is ready to make his NHL debut after the undrafted forward earned a contract following a strong collegiate campaign. Van Riemsdyk is at 30 points, 71 shots on net, 28 hits and a minus-7 rating across 63 appearances, but fantasy managers who were holding onto him for depth offense can cut him loose now that he's trending toward being stuck in the press box.

Van Riemsdyk had two goals in Thursday's 5-2 win over Detroit.
Both goals came after head coach Dean Evason moved van Riemsdyk onto a line with Boone Jenner and Kent Johnson after Cole Sillinger left the game with an upper-body injury in the first period. The newly-formed trio combined for three of the four Columbus goals in the second period. Van Riemsdyk has four goals over his last four games, and he has really warmed up in 2025 -- he has 19 points -- including 10 goals -- and 32 shots across 21 games.

Van Riemsdyk showed some grit Friday. He was bloodied by a high stick in the first period and didn't get back into the game until the start of the third. He was wearing a full face shield upon his return, but it didn't stop him from setting up Kent Johnson for the game-tying goal. Van Riemsdyk had a fantastic January with six goals and seven helpers over 14 appearances in a second-line role. The 35-year-old winger is up to 22 points, 58 shots on net and a minus-5 rating through 45 contests overall. He likely won't keep producing near a point-per-game pace, but it looks like he won't have to worry about being a healthy scratch any time soon.
